McCarthy: A Real Horrible Game
Tuesday, 19th Apr 2016 22:59

Boss Mick McCarthy admitted that the Blues’ 1-1 home draw with Fulham was “a real horrible game” and felt his side found it hard to play through the Cottagers, who sat back behind the ball. Jonas Knudsen scored an injury time equaliser, Moussa Dembele having put the Londoners ahead in the 66th minute.

“It was a real horrible game, they made it hard for us, everything was slowed down,” said an under-the-weather McCarthy at his post-match press conference.

“They sat behind the ball, they’ve got good qualities, as they proved with their goal and it just looked like a real end-of-season affair, which is a shame, actually.

“We didn’t want to make it that way, we certainly didn’t set out that way but we just never got going. All I can say is that we kept going and we did get something out of it, thankfully.”

He added: “It was Didzy that created the goal because it wasn’t easy to play in there, they sat back in and made it difficult.

“Didzy came on and showed his quality. We got the corner kick from his bit of quality and Jonas got in the box and got his goal.

“It’s lovely to get something out of it, but it wasn’t a great night, it’s not one I’ll remember fondly, that’s for sure.”

McCarthy was pleased for Knudsen, who scored his first goal for the Blues, even if he felt it was far from the Danish international’s best performance: “It was a fabulous finish. He got in the box, me and TC are always banging on at him to get in the box.

“If their winger’s back there he can be up there behind him and run off him. He’s such a powerhouse he should get headers as well.

“I have to say, that was probably the most ordinary game that Jonas has had, and yet he scored the equaliser, which is bizarre.

“He found it difficult with the ball today. It was a bit of a scruffy performance all round, and the same with Jonas.

“For his debut season, coming from the league he came from, I think he’s had a wonderful year. It’s nice for him to score.”

The result was the Blues’ eighth home draw this season in addition to six defeats with only eight games having been won at Portman Road this season, in contrast to last season’s 15.

McCarthy admits that Town have struggled at home throughout 2015/16 and particularly recently.

“It’s quite clear and certainly over the four weeks, six weeks that has been the case,” he continued.

“If I had an answer to it, I would have stopped it a month ago. It wouldn’t have even started if I had an answer to it.

“We’ll analyse it and have a look at it and see what’s gone wrong, and see why we’ve found it difficult to win at home.”

Have opposition sides visited Suffolk taking a different approach this season? “I would think so, they all know [how we play], we all look at them and see how we play against them.

“We’ve been done on the break again. It’s almost a carbon copy of the Brentford goal. When teams sit in we find it hard to play through them.

“And it’s cost us, teams sitting in, catching us on the break. But they were unerring in their passing and finishing, it was a good goal by them.”

Regarding full debutant Andre Dozzell, who played the first 55 minutes before being subbed, McCarthy said: “I’m almost apologetic for him having to play in that game because he was never going to shine in that game, that’s for certain.

“It was difficult, he played against arguably one of the best central midfield players, I thought Scott Parker was excellent and I thought Rohan Ince was as well in their pairing in there, they were great.

“I thought Parker dominated the game, everything about him, so it was always going to be hard for Andre.

“I tried to shift him left to try to get him a bit of space and I tried to play him just in front of the two sitters. It didn’t work.

“Look, he’s a 16-year-old kid who came on and had a great debut on Saturday. That doesn’t mean he’s just going to come in and rip it up. We’d have to be playing a lot better than we are to get the best out of him.

“He’s a good player. His debut was memorable, his full debut will be memorable because he’s made it but not because of the way that he played or the way the team played. He’ll be better for it, he’ll be a better player for the experience he’s had.”

Fulham boss Slavisa Jokanovic felt his side ought to not to have conceded the late goal: “I am disappointed about the late goal which we conceded. Generally I believe my team deserved to go back to London with a clean sheet.

“In the end I have to be satisfied with the fighting spirit and how my team tried to win this game, we offered a different face from the one we offered last Friday at Brighton [when they lost 5-0].”

The usual utter nonsense. I am genuinely embarrassed to support this club solely because of the way we play football. McCarthy out.

FrankBrogan, very well said.I for one have not renewed my season ticket,my Love is still with the club and always will be,But my money won't be.I will pick the games I want to see next season. With MM still in charge I just cannot see any improvement whatsoever, and if we don't get any backing from the owner it will end up another dull season. We just cannot keep papering over the cracks with the hope of improvement. There just seems to be no passion in the team anymore.!!

Marcus won't give me any money to buy a few decent players so i've decided we'll play cr@p until he does.

Adding Dozzell is not enough. He is great but MM you need to mix it up and try something different. Be less defensive (can afford it now). Play players to theirs strengths.....listen to the fans for once. A suggestion might be
Bailokowski (Crowe as back up)
Foley Smith Chambers Emmanuel or Knudsen (consider putting Hyam in central defence to see how he might do. Next season use Hammond, Clarke and Yorweth)
Pringle or Skuse
Feeney Bishop Dozell McGoldrick (interchange with Bru, Benyu, Kenlock, Mcdonnell, Blanchfield)
Sears (super sub Pitman or Murphy or Morris)

Club next season - off load Varney, Tabb, Douglas, Stewart, Digby, Toure, Coke, Gerkin)

Bring in - Moncur, goalkeeper, defenders, creative midfielder, midfielder to offer width, striker,

Brief - fill weak areas, no hoof-ball, natural passers and must tackle and take on players

OK - criticism please

If all fans can agree squad changes - get a banner and populate with recipe for success to show at next game for MM / management to see

Onthehoof - Hyam in central defender? Really? It's bad enough having him in midfield. Perhaps you enjoy the thought of numerous red cards and penalties

Once upon a time in a sleepy Suffolk town a once famous and renown football club was in danger of dropping further and further towards oblivion. This was due to two successive managers who were not very good at their job and the supporters of the club were sad and angry so the owner of the club said "I will pay a million pounds to the manager who will save my club and lo and behold the man McCarthy accepted the challenge.

He chose the men to save the team they were strong men who were good at running about, doing the not nice jobs and kicking the football a long, long way and it worked and the supporters were pleased although some of them longed for former days when their team played proper football passing the ball from one another until they were near their opponent's goal but this was not the McCarthy way.

The following season he sought some bigger and stronger men who were even better at doing the not nice jobs and could kick the ball even further and more often. By the end of the season more progress had been made and the team moved further up the league although the way of playing still was running about a lot doing the not nice jobs and kicking the football a long, long way. Meanwhile more of the supporters were remembering the days when their team played proper football passing the ball from one another until they were near their opponent's goal but this was not the McCarthy way.

The following year there was much excitement because their team looked as if they might go up into the very top league but this was not to be and the way of playing still was running about a lot doing the not nice jobs and kicking the football a long, long way. Meanwhile many more of the supporters were remembering the days when their team played proper football passing the ball from one another until they were near their opponent's goal but this was not the McCarthy way.

Now calamity other teams were beginning to find the way to play against McCarthy's team and they began to lose but still he played the way he knew how and refused to change and continued to make his team run about a lot, do the not nice jobs and kick the football a long, long way. Even more supporters began to clamour for the days when their team played proper football passing the ball from one another until they were near their opponent's goal but this was not the McCarthy way. But, rather like the a famous emperor, he continued to believe he was right and some loyal, and it must be said, rather foolish young men agreed with him and so it still continues McCarthy's team still runs about a lot, do the not nice jobs and kicking the football a long, long way.

Where will it end? No one knows. Will it end in success or disaster? No one knows but most likely the once famous and renown football club will continue to stutter and stumble along from one season to the next neither going forward nor backward just quietly stagnating.

Oh for another knight of the stature and skill of past knights to rescue this once famous and renown football club and restore it to its former glory. Will such a man appear one can only hope that he does.

It,s quite worrying that we now seem second best to teams that have been struggling for most of the season. If this currant trend carries on into next season then i fear we will be very likely be involved in a relegation scrap. We really need the owner and manager to to take a long hard look at this situation and come up with a solution. At the moment the squad we have are nowhere up to the job in hand.

MM groupies must have filthy necks having their heads so far up McCarthy's backside or buried in the sand.

Unfortunately every game played under MM is a real horrible game, that's the way he sets the game up. It's not for me I'm afraid, but if that's what supporters like watching then it's up to them.

Judging by the voting the anti MM brigade seems to consist of about 20-30 people (out of 16-17000 supporters).

There's no point in suggesting who should go unless you start with MM as whoever he brings in will just be crap. The MM fans have missed the point, he saved us from Div 1 but has little else to offer. Sadly he's with us another season so while i hope I'm wrong, its going to be the same.
As for the team I'd get rid of most and start with Bart Smith Bru Mcg Feeny Sears + youth and bring back loanees. The rest should be sold or given away. We missed the chance to get rid of Murphy for £4m and now he's worth £4 (a year older and more injuries!).
Trouble is that we're too passive and should have got our "Mick OUT" banners by now so he'd get the hint and walk.
