McCarthy Bemoans Bad Marking and Town Seeming to "Unravel"
Saturday, 13th Aug 2016 18:01

Town boss Mick McCarthy was left bemoaning his side’s failure to mark from a corner and his team seeming to “unravel” as they were defeated 2-0 at Brentford.

McCarthy was pleased with his team’s performance before the break and didn’t see the result coming at half-time: “I didn’t see that being the scoreline at half-time, I don’t think anybody did, truth be known.

“We didn’t mark properly from a corner, did we? Gives them a goal, but what’s disappointing is that we seemed to unravel after that and looked like conceding another one, which is unlike us.

“And, of course, we did, and that made it really difficult for us because they can play and it’s harder then to chase it and get after it, especially two games in with the heat that’s around and probably the disappointment of conceding the goals that we did.”

After last week’s 4-2 victory over Barnsley McCarthy was frustrated that the Blues conceding from set pieces and he admits to concerns with both goals today having come from corners.

“Yes, of course,” he added. “I don’t like conceding goals from those things, they can be avoided. And we’ll try and make sure we do avoid it.”

He says it’s something they spend a lot of time working on in training: “Of course, we do look at it, it’s not like we just forget all about it.

“People have got jobs to do and if we do them correctly then goals don’t end up in the back of our net. But quite clearly we haven’t, have we?”

He added: “If they left me unmarked like that I’d score with it and all, and I’m 57. I’m not joking either.

“We mark man for man, people talk about zonal marking, but there’s no right way or wrong way in terms of zonal or man for man.

“The only right way is stopping your bleeding man form scoring, that’s the only right way. It’s however you do it and we didn’t do it, did we?

“I played there for a long time and I’m sure somebody scored against me at some stage, so it does happen. But that was far too simple.”

Why does he feel his side were so under par once they were behind? “Straight after the game it would be impossible for me to analyse and say anything about that.

“We’d had a really good first half, everybody knew that, I think everybody in the ground knew we’d played really well, it had been a good performance.

“Then to concede like we did, it shouldn’t knock the stuffing out of us, but it appeared to. It certainly gave them a lift as well, of course.”

Brentford boss Dean Smith felt the first goal was key: “We gave the ball away cheaply in the first half but we had some good passages of play just before the break and then the goal gave us a lot of confidence.

“After that we showed glimpses of what we can do. There’s a still a lot to work on, but we were very good today in terms of competing for second balls, we had to do that side of the game and did that well.”

He added: “Getting that first win is big. We’ve got players who have never played in the Championship before and probably felt a bit apprehensive.

“We didn’t play well last weekend and got beaten, but I’ve said to the players I believe they are a really good Championship team but they have to believe in themselves.”

I live in the South West, don't have a season ticket and only get to watch a handful of games each season - which is why I rarely share my opinions, I do however enjoy reading the views of others supporters. Following two extremely poor performances I am not surprised that most posts are negative, what I find far more telling is that the posts don't have the usual down arrows from those that believe the glass is half full.

I have to admit I wasn't there...

That said how many times down have to say our defence was sub-standard. MM knows that but he just do something about it.

I agree with previous - mid table is where we will be & after 14 years in this division that is not something to aim for. ME needs to look at the competition and realise the chance of getting promoted via prudent management & clever buys has well gone..

First away game in 12 years - now know why. MM comments that we really good 1st half a joke. We were ok but lacked cutting edge. 2nd half same but little quality or passion all over pitch. Final 3rd as always been our main issue and very evident today. My mum could have jumped higher then Murphy and he looked knackered and like so many comments on here we all know Chambers is not a right back.

End of the line.We are facing a momentous d-day decision moment - where do we go from here ?
We simply can't carry on with the present manager, who plays players in wrong positions but refuses to acknowledge or change as he is too stubborn, capitulates in cup matches, has no intention to play homegrown players, tactically..a total one trick pony, has no attacking bone in him...and to boot, a President who is conspicuous by his absence. We are a complete run down version of what a modern club should be and after 42 years of following Town, I am losing interest. Already my young son has given up owing to the sterile hoofball he sees every week.Great club gone bad..

Oldegold last line is spot on great club gone bad we are in serious danger of getting stuffed next week and becoming bottom 3 candidates this early in the season and as a previous poster said and I agree we don't have the bottle for a relegation battle I hear we will fill over and did never mind MM and the rest is 11 will still get paid more per week than most of us get in 6 months heyhoe let's go "down" or MM out and the tragic 11 start playing like they want to win.

I believe we need a coach who can sort out the defence because obviously McCarthy can't i was trying to think of something he can do well and the only thing i could think of was p-ss everybody off he is great at that.

My 2 pennith on the subject, the cynic in me would suggest that management or lack of it have signed a new contract takes him to 60 nice bit of compensation when Evans finally sticks the knife into them, just for the record i don,t get to many games but the two i went to last year were the worst brand of so called football i,ve ever witnessed, feeling worried about my clubs future

A rudderless ship

No leadership on or off the pitch

Club is run by an 'organisation' that every few years has questions surrounding its business practices for large sporting events

The irony is never lost on me that they sell 'Corporate ENTERTAINMENT' but seem unable to produce any on the pitch

We have a manager and his side kick plus several senior players who are just TOO COMFORTABLE and no matter how bad they play they know they will NEVER be dropped

Sad thing is this is a club we are all passionate about and we have got some great young players coming through - best in a long long time

But do you think we will get the best out of them

I was going to hold off till 10 games in to make comments and see who we bring in

Bart , Ward and loanee Grant aside - we have players either out of position , out of form ,

always crocked or just not good enough

You might think that a 'defensive' manager and an 'attacking' coach may be a good combination but we have been woeful in defence for about 18 months conceding soft goals and pretty toothless up front

I am excited about the likes of Bish , McDonnell , Dozzell , Bloomfield and Ward - all exciting attack minded players

But when we have a manager at 2-0 down with a game to win bringing on Douglas , I think the writing is on the wall - I almost wonder if he does it on purpose

I am not sure I want any more of this ME regime = clean house and do it soon

If we lose on Tuesday, which is highly likely and then lose next Sunday, which is inevitable, where will we go from there? Something has to change soon. I hate feeling this way , but I hope we lose these next two games, it may bring about the change most of us want.

There is something seriously wrong at the Town. Despite assurances that cash was available in the off season, nothing has changed. Like the turnstiles under Major Clegg, there's just been a thin lick of blue paint over the squad. Yes, youngsters have come in, but no new senior players of quality have been added to bring that skill, knowledge and nous onto the pitch. This means that for the third season running our 'stable' (yawn) squad is playing with exactly the same tactics AND on field approach/ attitude. For crying out loud, this approach was rumbled at the end of the 2014-15 season when we couldn't buy a win and made the playoffs by default- I was at Blackburn that day.
After the woeful 2015-16 season was MM actually given assurances by ME that funds were available? I don't suppose that we will ever know.
I didn't post on here over the summer as I waited and waited for movement on the transfer front and no quality additions were made to the senior core of the squad.
At present I feel strongly that ITFC released 'information' which caused me to renew my season ticket under false pretences.

If i could rewind time, I would not have renewed my season ticket. I recall MM saying h was going to play 2 proper full backs. What chance that he will do this on Tuesday, move Chambers, & bring in one of the young boys

I share blueherts feelings entirely. There is a feeling of doom and gloom amongst the die hards of this once great club that years ago tilted at windmills, was the David that fought off the Goliaths. Look at us now...a silent President who doesn't invest, young players not being given the right opportunity, players CLEARLY being played out of position, the most sterile and ineffective football played in years at the club and an open policy to capitulate in every cup match as the manager doesn't have the bottle for the fight..
After many, many years of following Town, I am losing interest and it was barely 15 months ago that I was pumping my chest out at the Portman Road play off against norwich and could smell the football legend that is Ipswich that day...you could sense that if the club were managed properly as it was under the Cobbolds and Sheepshank the potential that could be fulfilled would be immense...we always punched above our weight.
Now we seem to be in terminal decline with a manager that will not bend and deliberately sabotages wins with his stubborness and pompousness.... i.e yesterday chasing a result at 0-2..what to do ? He brings on Douglas.....please. We are leaking goals and he manifestly continues to play Chambers in a wrong position instead of promoting two young full backs that could bring some vigour to the team.We rely on route 1 football.Wasn't he supposed to try and win back hearts and minds this summer ?
He has picked up where we left off last season and it is not surprising that fans are leaving in droves and my son has given up due to the terrible football above all else and that is damaging. Who realistically wants to shell out to see this rubbish on the pitch with an unbendable manager ?
Such a shame as in the Robson years and even briefly under Burley, we were an example of how football should be played and a club run and look at us now. I am dreading the Derby next week and in 42 years I have never feared them in any way...on the contrary.
It's time to stop and smell the coffee and force through the changes starting at the top..and quicky.

Romford blue.. i wasnt there but i didnt need to be. He continues to play chambers at RB, Smith should play ahead of Brera all day long and he brings on Douglas to get us back in the match. Oh and i watched the highlights, We were poor against a team i believe who are very average. We will struggle if nothing changes.

We won first game, lost second (attended both). Great first half, poor second. Plus we have two new signings still bedding in. But 2nd game in and already more conspiracy theories than Roswell.

Aston Villa have mirrored us exactly, losing their first match away, losing their cup game to 2nd league Luton and and winning the second match at home yesterday. Newcastle have spent millions and have lost their first 2 games - splashing the cash really worked there, didn't it. Serious sense of perspective is needed. Looking forward to seeing them at Wolves next Tuesday! :)

One or two points to consider:
1.Why did we spend a shed load of money on a player we did not really need and means our best player and defender is now sat on the bench?

2.We have a bunch of tired ageing sick note forwards and one who runs around like a madman but to no effect.

3.How many more wingers are we going to ruin--( I can think of Henshall and Stewart for starters)--I thought our new young signings were going to play WIDE and put the ammo in to Surf to score---and so did he I think!

4.Football point---what happenned to people on the posts at corners-----despite the atrocious marking the first goal may have been stopped with somebody on the post.

5.Do our players ever look before they pass the ball-----appears not.

Could go on, suffice to say this is the most depressed I have ever felt about our great club in over 40 years of watching them----at least John Duncan was pleasant and personable and listened to the fans.

If we were to get rid of Mick, what manager would you bring in to replace him? We need investment from the owner, if not a new owner who is willing to spend! I like Mick, I will always support and get behind the lads, thats what we need more than the moaning! There are teams in this league worse of than us.

We have a lot of good youth players coming through which can only be good for the club! But they need a chance to prove how good they are and that they are ready for the step up to this league. It is during cup games or games where we are losing, that we throw them on to try and change the game, see what they can do. Bringing Douglas on when we are 2-0 down is a tactical error from MM, thats when you would bring on Dozzell to try and change the game.

We need a new right back and striker who can score goals, Knudsen is a solid defender, but isnt as attacking as Mings and Cresswell. Chambers is passionate but not a RB, either a new right back or Emmanuel would be great. Webster looks good but would like to see him and Smith over Berra.

Lets remmeber we are only 2 games into the new season.

Chambers will be decent on and off bench... All of squad need to take long hard look at themselves, and maybe have a word with a good professional, who knows when you think your at your best, you still look to improve
