McCarthy Bemoans Bad Marking and Town Seeming to "Unravel"
Saturday, 13th Aug 2016 18:01

Town boss Mick McCarthy was left bemoaning his side’s failure to mark from a corner and his team seeming to “unravel” as they were defeated 2-0 at Brentford.

McCarthy was pleased with his team’s performance before the break and didn’t see the result coming at half-time: “I didn’t see that being the scoreline at half-time, I don’t think anybody did, truth be known.

“We didn’t mark properly from a corner, did we? Gives them a goal, but what’s disappointing is that we seemed to unravel after that and looked like conceding another one, which is unlike us.

“And, of course, we did, and that made it really difficult for us because they can play and it’s harder then to chase it and get after it, especially two games in with the heat that’s around and probably the disappointment of conceding the goals that we did.”

After last week’s 4-2 victory over Barnsley McCarthy was frustrated that the Blues conceding from set pieces and he admits to concerns with both goals today having come from corners.

“Yes, of course,” he added. “I don’t like conceding goals from those things, they can be avoided. And we’ll try and make sure we do avoid it.”

He says it’s something they spend a lot of time working on in training: “Of course, we do look at it, it’s not like we just forget all about it.

“People have got jobs to do and if we do them correctly then goals don’t end up in the back of our net. But quite clearly we haven’t, have we?”

He added: “If they left me unmarked like that I’d score with it and all, and I’m 57. I’m not joking either.

“We mark man for man, people talk about zonal marking, but there’s no right way or wrong way in terms of zonal or man for man.

“The only right way is stopping your bleeding man form scoring, that’s the only right way. It’s however you do it and we didn’t do it, did we?

“I played there for a long time and I’m sure somebody scored against me at some stage, so it does happen. But that was far too simple.”

Why does he feel his side were so under par once they were behind? “Straight after the game it would be impossible for me to analyse and say anything about that.

“We’d had a really good first half, everybody knew that, I think everybody in the ground knew we’d played really well, it had been a good performance.

“Then to concede like we did, it shouldn’t knock the stuffing out of us, but it appeared to. It certainly gave them a lift as well, of course.”

Brentford boss Dean Smith felt the first goal was key: “We gave the ball away cheaply in the first half but we had some good passages of play just before the break and then the goal gave us a lot of confidence.

“After that we showed glimpses of what we can do. There’s a still a lot to work on, but we were very good today in terms of competing for second balls, we had to do that side of the game and did that well.”

He added: “Getting that first win is big. We’ve got players who have never played in the Championship before and probably felt a bit apprehensive.

“We didn’t play well last weekend and got beaten, but I’ve said to the players I believe they are a really good Championship team but they have to believe in themselves.”

But most people on the news comments always end or start there posts with 'and it sounded as if..' Or 'from the sounds of it'

People on this comment section have posted that MM is chatting sh1t saying we played poor 1st half.. No we didn't. We had a good half before awful second.

Yet again we concede goals scored by a defender from a set piece. Surely a former international defender & manager can sort this

I will no doubt get some stick for saying it as we "should alway stick by our team" but I will not contribute another penny to a club owned and run by clowns into the ground. I love Ipswich town and support the players but I cannot support this strategy of doing it all on the cheap when tickets and shirts are some of the most expensive in the league.

Ehhhh Mick you prehistoric and tactical inept travesty of a high level football manager: See bemoaning is quit easy isn't it your stubborn Dinosaur :-) lol Real easy in fact! But Seriously why on earth don't you not also not "BEMOAN" just a fraction of your your own Zzzilly mistakes Einersteiner?????????
Like just for instance bringing on the equivalent in A) speed and agility of Ursain Bolt ..... and B) the equivalent in assists and goalscoring ability of Lionel Messi .... meaning one of your absolute favorite pets i.e. 34 year old ultra lethargic "Brother Douglas", with about 15 min left in the min in a game we btw are LOSING 0-2 .... over Andre Dozzell (yep I know fully well the former immediately almost [somehow] scored following a free-kick , but seriously folks with his general display of "lethargy" on a football field he really belongs in the freaking Ryman League at this stage of his career)???????????

How do we get rid of ME, exactly? Stay away when most people have already bought season tickets? Perhaps some kind of organised demonstration? Not sure enough fans feel strong enough about it yet

There was a lot wrong with the shambles McCarthy put out today.
Despite what he claims there is no visible team spirit. The defence barely speak to each other. They all ignore Chambers because he is hopeless and has no credibility to blame anyone else, Berra keeps himself to himself and Webster was out of his depth.
Only Knudsen who was carried last year seemed to put up any fight.
McCarty is clueless -OUT

I'm sorry all you lot are f*cking dillusional if you think we will be anywhere near the top six this season. Are owner is a stingy pr*ck are manger a prehistoric muppet and are team is mid table at best. Murphy is past it Berra is now poor Sears was only decent during that half season Bishop our so called Messiah is overrated and McGoldrick the only player with enough quality to get us into the top six is now injured. Players such as Douglas Bru Vaney the list goes on are simply not good enough for this league let alone a team chasing promotion. The three new players look like they could be promising however sadly for them they are surrounded by utter sh*te. Chambers is a respectable captain and centre back however is one of the many players played out of position. When will this great club and the individuals running it ever learn.Unless Evans frees funds and buys a few quality players we are f*cked. We need a miracle otherwise we will all be sat here in May uninterested with yet again nothing to play for but mid table. Likewise please go on and ban me from this site or slate me for my so called pessimism but it's called realism idiots!!!!!

For me the its the same old problems , our Manager picks the same player sand keeps playing players out of positions. When is he going to realise that Chambers isn't any good at full back! I would play both young lads in both full back positions, would give us something going forward. Skuse isn't good enough, league 1 player at best, no forward thinking pass. I would play bishop in the centre, we should have invested in a central midfielder in the summer a playmaker. Should be Dozzell in a few seasons time but maybe to young to play ever game. Problem we sticking with Mick is it will be much the same, he won't pick young players. Hope I'm wrong but time for change if there isn't a change in his stubbornness and boring playing style.

Whilst I'm at it I think Murphy is idle, Sears willing but has had confidence shot by our hoofball clown who knows best how to put players in wrong roles and waste any technical ability. We all wanted Bru to succeed but he is not currently good enough. Skuse is average at best, Chambers a bad joke.
All roads lead to McCarthy. No one in ITFC is challenging his ineptitude

The trouble is ME knows that he has us by the short & curlies. If his companies served up this dross week after week his customers/ clients would soon take their business (whatever that is!) to one of his competitors. Sadly, as supporters of a football team we are unable to do that.

Does anyone on this site really think that if we get rid of mick then we're getting promoted? It's clear to see that almost every team we player have better quality players than us. A new manager is not the answer. I still believe MM is doing ok with the players he's got. I mean come on who here really can look at that squad and say well be playoffs if mick leaves. Serious investment is what's needed or simply better recruitment.
And if he's going to play the 4-4-2 then it has to be a free form 4-4-2. Ward and Grant both like to play in the midfield areas rather than out on the wing. That was the problem today we were too rigid. When we have the ball let them two do what they want. When we don't then yes that's the time to be rigid

That's the problem with our model
Of football ownership in England. One person/family has all the power and can do what they like. Imagine if Abramovich decided to do an ME with Chelsea?

If we had a supporters presence on the board then things might be different?

So now it's the weather's fault? What's the excuse going to be next week? The milkman was late and he didn't get his breakfast? Yes, we're only three games in, but it's the same old story. Same injured players, same hoofball, same tight fisted owner, same boring manager. Why is it the only thing expected to change it our attitudes? Give us a reason to be optimistic and we will.

I was so annoyed today I was not going to post again, three hours plus later still on the train back North East I just have to comment on the MM press conference......it's as dire as the game and performance ... The first half was just the upper hand to us at best. Must be the heat....no can,t be. We get the same post match crap every game we lose.

Is it the same players making the same mistakes every time? If not, then it's a coaching issue. If it's the same player(s) why are they still in the side? Mick needs to sort this out & quick because I do fear we don't have the bottle for a relegation fight which is what will happen unless we improve

Don't you just yearn to go back to Yorkshire Mick don your flat cap and go for long walks on the Yorkshire dales before returning home to your Yorkshire cottage and a meal of roast beef and Yorkshire pudding. Please don't let us stop you.

Penguinblue. Agree with some of ur player assessment but it opinion of Webster is rubbish. If it wasn't for him we'd have conceded at least 2 more goals. The problem is he's playing alongside Berra who is way past his best. For the person suggesting ME should resign? Yer, would be a great result for the club who'd have to find £70,000,000 odd pounds to pay him off the debt owed to him. Thus no more itfc. Should he spend more? Maybe. Should he try to sell the club? Maybe. But resign? Ridiculous.

We had no cutting edge no decent forward play no midfield and the worst defenders in our league Sunday morning at best

Webster and Knudsen both had ok games. Chambers was our weak link but not his fault as he isn't a right back.

Romford blue , I didn't renew my season ticket this year for the first time in 17 years , but was persuaded by friends to go today and watch that disgrace !! So i DID go today and we were truly awful , and yet you still seem happy to defend a performamce like that !! McCarthy is a likeable guy but an out of date dinosaur and Evans is just a joke !! The state we are in now hurts , it bloody hurts
