Murphy Completes Newcastle Move
Sunday, 28th Aug 2016 10:16

Daryl Murphy has completed his £3 million move to Newcastle United, signing a two-year deal.

"I'm absolutely delighted to get it over the line and really looking forward to it," Murphy told the Magpies official website.

"When I knew the club was interested, it was a no-brainer for me, so I'm happy it's all done.

"I think with the squad of players that the club have now, there's no reason why we shouldn't be there or thereabouts come the end of the season."

Newcastle boss Rafa Benitez added: "Daryl has experience and has proven that he can score goals in the Championship.

"He gives us another option in attack and we could see from this weekend's game against Brighton that we needed more bodies up front.

"Daryl has a good attitude and he can be very important for us this season."

Murphy, whose first English club was Newcastle's great rivals Sunderland during Mick McCarthy’s time in charge at the Stadium of Light, initially joined the Blues for the first of three loan spells under Roy Keane's management in 2010 before signing permanently from Celtic in the summer of 2013.

In the 2014/15 campaign he topped the Championship scoring charts with 27 goals as the Blues reached the play-offs.

Last season the 23-times-capped Republic of Ireland striker netted a more modest 10 in an injury-affected campaign and he was yet to get off the mark for the Blues this season prior to his switch, having had what looked to be a perfectly good goal ruled out at Wolves.

In total, Murphy, who almost joined the Blues from his hometown club Waterford United in 2004/05 having been on trial before he signed for the Black Cats, scored 67 goals in 207 starts and 18 substitute appearances for Town.

Boss McCarthy is confident that he will sign a replacement for Murphy before Wednesday's 11pm deadline.

“I’ve no doubt we will get someone in," he told the club site. "I’ve been on the phone non-stop recently so we will see what happens over the next few days.”

Good luck Daryl this team will miss you big time. Maybe just one tiny bit of advise Not sure that the Newcastle supporters will be too keen that you only think they will be " there or thereabouts come the end of the season." I think there expectations are more likely to win the league with record points,

Good luck Murph thanks for your efforts over the years. Your 27 goal season was an outstanding effort. Big 4 days ahead for ITFC now we need at least 2 players in before window shuts, not just squad fillers. Over to you Mick & Marcus

Good luck Murph. Never stopped trying which is more than can be said for so many over past few years. Only regret is that MM didn't give him and Sears their head up top together. A genuine front 2 partnership might have given a reason to stay......but maybe not.

No one is mentioning Darren Bent. He has got to have a good season or 2 left and would lead the line better than Pitman having his best day. It might mean something to him too and better than sitting on derby's bench behind a summer

I think the time is right for all parties with this move. He can hardly get better and let's face it he will never replicate the 27 goals he scored a season or so ago so good luck tim him. Just hope that a sizable chunk of the money is actually spent on recruitment but I very much doubt it somehow given our poor record in this respect.

Now we can get Luke Varney on a permanent deal!

Murphy is the sort of player who needs a run of games to get into form and I'm not sure he will get that at Newcastle.
Should only the money be better for him, I'd like to think we could take him back - on loan initially of course.

Lets hope we can find the new David Johnson with the cash

Sorry to see him go great servant to the club, but we have to find replacement now so who??

Danny graham from Blackburn? Possible
Donaldson from Birmingham? To expensive I feel

Surely will be someone from lower league but who?

Danny graham over rated and Donaldson over the hill.

This could be a win/win/win situation providing we use the money well for a suitable replacement.

Thanks Murphy for your great service to the Tractor Boys and for your terrific goals. Very best wishes to you and your family.

According to this link, Sky have also revealed that there is an add-on of a further £1m if Newcastle get promoted this season.

I'd go for big offer for Bradley Dack and get Best or Shelton in up top as cover for Sears and Pitman.

Money this year is bonkers ...£3m for a two year deal is going to cost Newcastle £30k a week in transfers without wages etc on top ......what happened to the days of Johnny Wark going to Liverpool because he wanted to earn £50k a year !!

....lets spend the money on a couple of up and coming lower league players...keeping the money in our leagues and making lower league players have an opportunity for aspirations

Good luck Murphy....think this is a great deal all round

Anyone want to place a bet that his replacement will be the freebie Leon Best? We are kidding ourselves if we think that money will be spent on transfer fees. We've seen and heard it all before.

Grumpyoldman. Donaldson certainly isnt on more money at Birmingham than we would be offering. Was informed when I went to Birmingham last season that their top wage was £ 5000 a week. So somewhat less than the average here

Sad to see Murph go, but on the face of it it seems a good deal for all parties. He's been a great servant to ITFC, his contribution will always be fondly remembered, especially during the 2014/15 season with those 27 goals - I really felt if we'd have just invested a bit more heavily in that January and pushed on it might have seen us over the line, but as usual it didn't happen and here we are.

No one can deny him the move, he fully deserves the opportunity and I for one wish him all the best. I think we will miss his presence, hold up play and overall game just as much as his goals.

I just hope we spend/re-invest the money wisely, that's the only worry, especially with deadline day being so close. We still ideally needed a striker prior to him leaving but we probably need 2 now, and at least one other midfielder.

Could be an interesting few days.

I think it is a great deal, I think when I saw him against Norwich I thought that he had lost half a yard of pace since his outstanding season of 2 years ago, a season that I doubt he will ever replicate again. Interesting to see who comes in as his replacement, if we don't spend a significant percentage of this fee on probably a couple of players it will give us all a indication of Marcus Evans intentions with the club?? Are we the first club in history to be taken over by a near billionaire who then tries to save money??

Id be happy it we signed a couple of young lads from the PL, like we have with Ward 600k everyone going who's he but now they know, cause PL clubs say they cant make it now doesn't make them bad players with a future, in a year you can see 10 million on Wards head easy, so as an investment that would be my guess, for 2 million we could get 3 players who would added a new dimention and possible future value, than the exp has beens ive heard mentioned by fans.

So, it was "a no brainer for me", does that mean that he was un happy here, so what happened to the " I am happy at Ipswich and my family are settled here" then. That's football for you, but he has to make as much money out of the game as he can, as a footballers useful life is indeed short.

Their careers might be short come on they earn more in 2 months than most of us do in a year.
Don't begrudge them it just adding abit of reality.
Thanks Murph and good luck.

Thanks and Good Luck Murph' - a no brainer of a move at this stage of career.

Chances are you'll be able to play in a side where a pre-requisite for every player is NOT to be expected to play anywhere / everywhere - and spend more time defending than attacking. Something most forwards find alien to their natural game.

Can only get better for you Murph' - on all fronts. Enjoy the twilight of your career.
