Murphy Completes Newcastle Move
Sunday, 28th Aug 2016 10:16

Daryl Murphy has completed his £3 million move to Newcastle United, signing a two-year deal.

"I'm absolutely delighted to get it over the line and really looking forward to it," Murphy told the Magpies official website.

"When I knew the club was interested, it was a no-brainer for me, so I'm happy it's all done.

"I think with the squad of players that the club have now, there's no reason why we shouldn't be there or thereabouts come the end of the season."

Newcastle boss Rafa Benitez added: "Daryl has experience and has proven that he can score goals in the Championship.

"He gives us another option in attack and we could see from this weekend's game against Brighton that we needed more bodies up front.

"Daryl has a good attitude and he can be very important for us this season."

Murphy, whose first English club was Newcastle's great rivals Sunderland during Mick McCarthy’s time in charge at the Stadium of Light, initially joined the Blues for the first of three loan spells under Roy Keane's management in 2010 before signing permanently from Celtic in the summer of 2013.

In the 2014/15 campaign he topped the Championship scoring charts with 27 goals as the Blues reached the play-offs.

Last season the 23-times-capped Republic of Ireland striker netted a more modest 10 in an injury-affected campaign and he was yet to get off the mark for the Blues this season prior to his switch, having had what looked to be a perfectly good goal ruled out at Wolves.

In total, Murphy, who almost joined the Blues from his hometown club Waterford United in 2004/05 having been on trial before he signed for the Black Cats, scored 67 goals in 207 starts and 18 substitute appearances for Town.

Boss McCarthy is confident that he will sign a replacement for Murphy before Wednesday's 11pm deadline.

“I’ve no doubt we will get someone in," he told the club site. "I’ve been on the phone non-stop recently so we will see what happens over the next few days.”

........ and when you play Murph' you'll probably get some service in a rightful, and best, position.

Sad to see big daryl leave... Being an ex Sunderland player Shame you have gone to club run by Mike Ashley .. Hope we can finish above them in the league but with their pots of £ be a big Mick miracle after Norwich result on Saturday think everyone in the league hopes they lose each game .. Not sour grapes just despise the way clubs like chelski Newcastle man city etc throw £ at it. Still hope you do well for Eire but that's all.

A very good move for club and player.

Now let us wait and see if what Milne said and Mick has hinted at(ie spending the money) will come to pass in this window with just 3 days left.

I am sure it wont be for the want of trying;but clubs knowing we have a bit of dosh, and with so little time left it may be difficult;but sure Mick is doing his best.

3 former forwards formerly at this club are not appearing regularly for their clubs ie Wickham,Rhodes and Bent!

Best of luck Smurf.

This is a good deal for everybody and I will never forget 2 years ago when the fellah was on fire and everything he hit flew in to the net, unlike now.

Jordan Rhodes, David Nugent on loan for starters, Will Gregg, Lookman from Charlton?

This next 48 hours is crucial to our whole season.
