McCarthy Cool With His Striking Options Despite No Late Addition
Thursday, 1st Sep 2016 15:16

Town boss Mick McCarthy says he’s “cool with” his striking options, despite having been unable to add another frontman to his squad on the final day of the transfer window.

After Daryl Murphy moved on to Newcastle over the weekend, the Blues had a bid for Barnsley frontman Marley Watkins turned down on Tuesday and then turned their attention to QPR’s Northern Ireland international Conor Washington on deadline day, but the two clubs were unable to agree a deal.

“We had bids in for strikers but for one reason or another they didn’t come off. That happens,” McCarthy told the club site.

“I’m cool with what we have. We’ve got good players here. Pits [Brett Pitman], Freddie, Leon Best, Varns [Luke Varney].

“We’ve got Didz [David McGoldrick] to come back. Tom Lawrence can play up front, Wardy [Grant Ward].

“We have reinvested the money we got for Murph [Daryl Murphy] with the players we have brought in and we will look to add to the squad again in January."

So many people on here who are happy to have the wool pulled over their eyes.
This club has zero ambition now as far as the boardrooms concerned. Everything on the cheap and if we cant get a bargain we'll make do with average.
Id love to know what derisory offers we made for strikers and what peanuts we offered them in wages.
And as for anybody who thinks the style will change because we dont have a quality target man anymore you need to wake up im afraid.
Hes been playing this way for 20 years as a manager, no way is he even going to contemplate proper football.
It will still be lumping it up to whoevers up there. And it wont work anymore without Murph.

Can't imagine it would make much of a difference to our style anyway as he is not attack minded in the slightest. We have loaded up on midfielders as usual. Apart from Williams, we have shopped at Poundland again and we'll get what we deserve no doubt.

I have to say, the squad we have assembled so far this season is amongst the best I have seen in a long time. On paper we look formidable. We just need to be that on the pitch. Also I think Murphy although being a good player, we always looked to lump it up to him all the time. So perhaps not having a 6ft 3 centre forward and instead we have quite a few technically capable footballers, it might result in the ball being played on the floor a bit more. You never know...

hey bluebottle. Cast your mind back to McCarthy's Wolves team that tor us to spreads at PR....3-0 I think. Not a hoof in sight as his two wingers made mincemeat of our defence.

It takes time to build a squad - especially when the manager has a pittance to work with financially.

You're either with him or you're not. But I for one am sick of the pessimist prats like you. MM has worked miracles and you're too dim to see it......or don't want to.

ArnieM that Wolves team played exactly like we do. They lumped it up to Iwelumo down the channels, and they fed off him, they had 2 good wingers and 2 scrappers in midfield with Ebanks-Blake alongside him.
But that was a long time ago now, the games changed and that style only gets you so far these days. You need a bit more to get promotion from this division.

Pat on the back from Marcus for saying the right things. Varner and Best replacing Murphy and Didz. Joke.

It's all well and good Freddie has to play through the middle now. But it most certainly looks we are going to stick with this 4-3-3 formation due to the personel we have now. And Freddie can't play through the middle on his own. Yes he's quick in behind but if you're playing one up top on his own he has to be able to hold the ball up. Not be out muscled and link the play. Something Freddie doesn't do. He can only play up top if he has a partner.

Fully expect the midfield 3 to be Skuse holding with the grant and Williams or bishop the other 2 slots.
With Sears, Ward and Lawrence battling it out for the wide spots

ArnieM is spot on. We are going to have to play differently this season. For the last two seasons we have been very predictable. Generally our posession percentages have been poor and we have relied heavily on Berra, Chambers and Smth launching huge balls forward to Murphy who then might/might not get it. He hen knocks it down to bring others into play. This strategy will have to change and we may well have to play like we did in our preseason games, where there was loads of passing, crossing, dribbling etc. I am fully aware that our results preseason were beyond bad, but the way we played was significantly more entertaining and since those games we have brought in a number of skilful players.

I still think we may end up signing an out-of-contract player anyway. Loads of players were released last minute and there are a fair few to look at. We've been linked with Bendtner and Lamah in the last couple of days also (both out of contract). It will be very interesting to see how we play without a target man at Reading, as we have played a lot of long ball away from home.

Like the signings and it looks promising, that a change of style could be implemented. Look at things with a positive spin.....

Money made from an old has been who fell off the cliff last season
Brought in younger faster players all for cheap

Let's just see in the next few games to see if style changes and how he makes use of the signings

So far the tried and tested frees he's plucked out and assembled a team challenging promotion

Anticipation excitement good to be blue again

If they dont change the style and start winning crowds will drop even futher-----was it the lowest derby crowd ever ? and just over 15,000 for Preston.

When winter comes could get even worse-----people and fans are NOT stupid and if there is no real ambition at club,as clearly shown this week, they will vote with there feet.

Personally feel signing Williams on a season long loan has been a smoke screen for not replacing Murphy...if we hadn't of signed Williams on Wednesday there certainly would have been more uproar on here.

There is potential in the signings with Williams the stand out loan with ACTUAL quality, only time will tell. All the best to all the new additions.

First of all Mick kept us in this league. We were awful and going down if you are to remember the tailend of 2012. Then he has build teams without money but looking at players we have now it should be getting better now. Mick is no half wit, he's a pragmatist and having brought these players in he should know best.My only concern is that we need to groom in Bishop and Dozzell and they have to play to develop. They are exceptional talents both.

The exact opposite could be said of you TheBeat. Despite positive news of any kind, you refuse to see anything but the negatives.

......... some people only need to look in the mirror - suggest they do it before talking in terms of others being so 'dim'.

Maybe a lesson or two on Football wouldn't go amiss either - maybe a book or something for your Xmas list ArnieM ?

Mensa test anytime.

Bye bye £3m. My problem is Evans has had his name on the shirt for a while another income we could get if some else did. Cresswell mings and Murphy all been sold with no major replacements and the old we will invest. Then the money just spent on running the club. Then u get mm being rude about fans moaning Christ even stevie wonder could see Bart is towns number one. But light at the end of the tunnel hoofball is dead but can the strikers score enough
