McCarthy Pleased With "Promising" Webster
Thursday, 15th Sep 2016 06:00

Blues boss Mick McCarthy says he’s really pleased with summer signing Adam Webster, who was widely viewed as Town’s man of the match in Tuesday’s 1-0 win at Derby.

The 21-year-old, signed from Portsmouth over the summer, started the season in the team before dropping out for the Preston game when Tommy Smith came back into the right-sided central defence role.

But a back injury to Smith allowed Webster to return at the iPro Stadium and McCarthy says the one-time England U18 and U19 international is someone he sees as having a big future.

“He was bought for that reason, he is very promising,” he said. “I left him out against Preston because I thought Tommy Smith was a better defender, and at the present he probably is. But as a footballer, he’s better than all of them.

“As [we saw at Derby], you’ve got to be able to defend sometimes in this league, we sometimes forget that, but some of his runs forward were excellent.

"I’m really pleased with him. Overall, I’m very, very pleased with him.”

Drop Bera and play Smith in his correct position and Webster together. Get a proper RB as well, FFS its not rocket science.

No Dissboy 'cos Berra is still our best defender.

No wickets he is most definitely not, but he is MM's mate.

Webster was really good on Tuesday evening after a couple of silly mistakes (and he wasn't the only one making mistakes!) grew into the game. I still prefer Tommy Smith and Berra together. It's Chambers who is the one making mistakes although he did play well on Tuesday.

It is nice to have options at the back as last season we relied on the usual back 4 all the time.

Play him as a defensive midfielder then, the excellent forward runs will be an improvement on Skuse.

Berra has to play, he's our best defender and most probably our best player. The weakest link in the side is no doubt Luke Chambers, worryingly slow, clumsy, donkey like and horrendous on the ball. Wouldn't be awful idea putting Webster right back.. but we all know Mick hasn't got the bottle to drop chambers as he's the fist pumping skipper who everyone loves..

I would love to see Smith and Webster to be honest. But Berra is still a very good centre back, so it is very tough. Maybe Webster as a right back, as I heard from some Pompey fans saying he played there a fair bit last season!

Anyone else see the passion from Berra when Bart saved that last minute goal at Derby? You can't fake that!!

Id make Berra captain personally, during the Preston game when Knudsen was faltering it was Berra who kept putting an arm around him and had him playing well, at one point he even held up a hand to Mick saying "Ive got this" and Mick let him sort it, surely thats the captains job ?? If Chambers wasnt captain maybe he could just go into the mix trying for a CB position and we could get a RB in because I can see him costing us games.

Webster looks good I would try him and smithy it can't go that wrong as MM DOES try other more stupid ideas (Chambers at right back) the other name first on the team sheet is Skuse he is a good character on and off the pitch and can organise it not good enough to just be a good character chambers has played there long enough and as a pro footballer should just be able to play there as many sunday league players can play anywhere and play well in that position chambers knows he has no competition there even though Emmanuel can't do any worse he just needs regular games to get up to speed !!!!! Sorry back to the point I think Webster is a future captain

Have to disagree with those who think Berra is our best centre back I think he is a liability particularly when it comes to grappling with the opposition in the penalty area. How he hasn't been booked and conceded penalties I don't know. Would rather see Smith and Webster together

All players push and shove and grapple, its part and parcel of the game now. Berra has the happy knack of just doing enough so as not to get too many bookings and not to give away pens! i hope!!

Wickets - What footballing reason keeps Chambers in the team at right back?

Wickets - part and parcel maybe but its illegal and being clamped down on - as per last Fri...

Berra had a poor season just gone, certainly by his standards, but he was arguably a contender for making the Championship team of the season in the previous 2 years. He is still only 31, an age when centre halves tend to be at their peak, so I cannot understand the amount of negativity towards him on here & can only assume it comes largely as a result of Tommy Smith being 'one of our own'.
Tommy is a good centre half, a hard-working, decent footballer who loves playing for the shirt, but to suggest he is a better defender than Berra is just plain wrong in my view. He was probably our best defender over the course of last season, but that does not mean he was brilliant by any stretch of the imagination, as he still made the type of errors he has made over previous seasons and his judgement can be questionable at times. Knudsen was new to the league/country and adapting, Chambers is not a full back, Berra had a dip in form at the start and end of the campaign, whereas Tommy Smith was what we know about Tommy Smith - and that made him our best defender last season.
If Berra slips back into last season's periods of poor form I will certainly be calling for him to be dropped, but I definitely feel he has done enough in his time here to justify being in the starting XI at this stage of the season. He is also the perfect influence to have alongside Webster as he makes the jump up to performing at Championship level.
I can see why MM might want to bring in Smith ahead of Webster for certain games, but for me the best pairing going forward at the moment is Webster & Berra, with the comfort of knowing Tommy Smith is ready to come in & play his heart out when called upon.

Wasn't sure about him initially - didn't impress. But he played well against Norwich I thought, so I was surprised to see him dropped after that game. Mind you, with MM's decisions, I shouldn't be surprised. MM bigged him up after the Derby Country game, but had only recalled him because of Tommy's injury - it wasn't a shrewd decision of his. If Tommy had been fit, he'd still be out of the side.

For me i agree Chambers is not ideal at right back but he is the only leader in the squad and skipper. I'm not sure we can do without him. As for the pen at Reading it wasn't Berra who gave it away so whats your point. Every side we play will have players doing just the same as Berra, maybe not so much at corners now but it will still go on. I cant remember too many pens against Berra sure there must have been some but not many.

In response to people saying he should play with Smith not Berra....I'm guessing none of you lot watched the Reading game? Their winger Bereens or something I think, was causing havoc down the right and had smith and Chambers on toast, then swapped wings and went completely quiet when faced with Knudsen and Berra.

Granted, the Smith against Preston was formidable but Berra is a much more consistent option at the moment which will benefit Webster a lot more and help ease him into championship football, I Mick wouldn't have given smith a contract last summer if he didn't see smith as Berras long term replacement. Certainly for this season though, Webster and Berra could be formidable.

At last, someone else who thinks Webster would be ideal as our defensive ball playing mid-fielder, add 2 ball playing other mid-fielders, Sears, Pitman & Ward as front runners; defensively we can cover all positions as we have good youngsters if given the chance.

McGoaldrick

Maybe because when he switched he was then on his wrong foot?
1

Wickets added 16:57 - Sep 15
To be fair after a great start he had gone quiet that's why they switched him but your right he did nothing much after the switch. Berra is one of the best in this league and seems to be over a bit of form loss towards end of last season.

Will Webster be dropped when Smithy is fit?ReCole Skues; wasn't 100% when Mick played him on Tuesday, think he said was only about 80%,so what was he doing playing him as he said he didn't think he would last as long as he did.

A partly fit Skues is preferable to other players then.Is it impossible for McCarthy to drop Skues or Chambers?Apparently, and Wickets thinks he doesn't have favourites, thats a matter of opinion when one considers the above.
