McCarthy: Webster Will Play in the Premier League
Wednesday, 21st Sep 2016 06:00

Town boss Mick McCarthy believes summer signing Adam Webster will go on to play in the Premier League. The 21-year-old, who joined the Blues from Portsmouth in July for £700,000 plus Matt Clarke who moved in the opposite direction, was widely viewed as the man of the match in Saturday’s 0-0 home draw with Aston Villa.

“He’ll go on and play in the Premier League,” McCarthy said. “Hopefully it’s with us, if not it’ll be with somebody else because he’s quick and he can handle the ball.

“Maybe in another team, at Portsmouth he would have been asked to get it and play a bit more, and he can do that.

“We saw that when he played against us [for Pompey in the FA Cup last season], he’s a very capable footballer and he hasn’t done that as much.

“But I think that’s because he’s come up two divisions and he’s learning his trade again.

“What I love about him is he’s bought into our defensive side of the game and he’s got better and better. I’m really pleased with him.”

He added: “He’s a good player, I keep saying that. That’s what I like about him more than anything, his defending. We know he can play, he’s a very talented footballer.”

We understand West Wittering-born Webster’s performance at the weekend caught the eye of watching Premier League scouts, which is not something which would surprise McCarthy.

“People will be watching him, there’s no doubt about that because he can defend but he’s very comfortable with the ball,” he continued. “He can break forward, he’s got two good feet, he’ll play in the Premier League.”

The Town boss spent more money on the 6ft 3in tall former England U18 and U19 international than any other player since he joined the Blues and he says that as a result it’s particularly gratifying to see the move working out.

“It’s always nice, especially if you’ve gone and spent money on them and they turn out to be good," he said.

“If you’re taking free transfers in all the time and Bosmans then you are taking a chance because generally for some reason that’s what they are, but that’s the most we’ve spent on a player. But, to be fair, it looks like it, he’s a good guy.”

gcon and essextractorboy93... you both marked marked me down i was wondering if you would care to share why? Is it because you feel we play lovely football? Is it because you think we will see promotion under MM? Is it because you feel we have been unlucky in the cups and MM really does set out to win these games? Or is it because you feel Chambers is the right person to be playing at R/B and we dont need a proper R/B? Just interested!

I may be cynical but Webster makes a few mistakes, gets dropped, Smith comes in and MM states that Smith is the better defender at this time.

Then all of a sudden, MM bigs up Webster in a news article on this site that seems to come out of the blue. Who knows it may be as a result from a prompting question.

Then the big news that Smith needs back surgery and is out for 12 weeks. In comes Webster and Mick is back on saying how good he is.

Don't get me wrong this is not a moan and I think it is good man management by Mick, but I do wonder whether Webster would be in the side had Smith been fit.

Oh and whilst those are criticising Webster for a poor clearance v the scum why don't you go back to the poor tackle by Sears that enabled the cross to come in in the first place. That is where the goal come from in my opinion. Not that I am over criticising Sears as I thought he did a fantastic job of keeping their winger quiet most of the match.

Hoppersblue10-I thought Jewell signed Cresswell and Mings only came onto the radar when Russel Osman recommended him so stop bigging the dinosaur up. His transfer dealings include jems such as Nouble, Toure Coke FFS

Focus on the negatives why don't you Hegansheroes?

How about

Murphy
Sears
Ward
Pitman
Webster
Mings
Knudsen

not to mention the young players he's brought through already into the first team.

Whilst we all want better & different things "real supporters" support the team irrespective if you don't like personnel or tactics, as for the mcarthy/ Evans out brigade presumably you have funds to buy the club etc!!!

Bohsleg end .. I would pick a far more attacking team for sure , but that would not be hard anybody could . Playing 3 centre backs in the back four , 3 defensive midfielders for home games , pretending to play 4-3-3 when in reality it is clearly 4-5-1 with Sears and Ward spending more time defending than attacking leaving 1 isolated forward . Producing s team that has only scored more than one goal in a game once this season .
I would also ask what young players MM has brought through that play regularly for the first team as I cant recall any , Bishop can't even get in above the non producing , non sciring Skuse and Douglas , Dozzell is not even in the squad , probably having his creative flair taught out of him before he is ready for 1st team .
And to say TC improves strikers we signed Sears who was scoring regularly and turned him to a low confidence player who hasn't scored for nearly a whole season !!
Murphy was here way before MM , Knudesn is vey average so that leaves your list of 5 play ers in almost as many years .
What have been your highlights of the games so far ?

I think some people need to give MM a break. We were in danger of going down to league 1 before he took over. In the last 2 seasons we have finished 6th and 7th and that was 7th without Bishop, Fraser and Murphy for most of season. If all 3 of them were fit all season we might have made top 2 let alone play offs. It was MM who brought the best out of Murphy by putting him into his favoured position when previous managers insisted on playing him out on the left. Ward and Webster appear to be great signings and Grant and Lawrence decent loans. Best and Varney may not be the greatest but time was running out and they have only got short deals until someone better is hopefully available. We have been robbed of 4 points this season in matches against Wolves and Norwich which would have put us well in contention. What would the boo boys be complaining about then I wonder?

...........we must have become the easiest Football Club in the entire Football League to manage - so, so little is expected by so many.

We are where we are for good reason ......... see above for relevant reason. No more, no less.

The amount of catastrophising and moaning on this site is unbelievable. Can't all you glass-always-half-empty people just take some deep breaths before posting, or maybe just go away and never come back?

Maybe the glass half-empty brigade are just no longer willing to kid themselves!

MM has always divided opinion wherever he has managed. Me personally i hate the playing style, i hate the favouritism i hate his stubbornness. No effort in the cups. Those of you that love him, fine, i am not an MM hater, far from from it. I want my team to play football with the prospect of winning something!

Blueboy

The prevailing wind doesn't change. The clue is in the word prevailing. In the UK the prevailing wind comes from a South Westerly direction. Surprised you didn't know that Mensa man.

ArnieM and the rest do you think calling other supporters stupid, childish and offensive names shows any of you in a good light. Everybody has the right to an opinion, they may seem delusional to you but taking any discussion to a name calling level to emphasis your point is puerile and does nothing to enhance your reputation.

Dissboy - Very charitable of you to ask but, No, none of those reasons.

It's because I find your persistantly negative, whining, slightly aggressive tone really tedious.
You have no more right to an opinion than anybody else.
You'll continue to receive minus points from me for as long you feel you have the entitlement to patronise others that don't agree with you as 'pethetic' 'sad' 'puppets' etc.

There you go - you asked.

I think you stand a far better chance of becoming pals with Blueboy. You are cut from very much the same cloth.

When Mick says, "he's quick and he can handle the ball," and then follows that soon after with "he's learning his trade again," it does rather set the alarm bells ringing. But Mick obviously rates Webster, and most of us on here seem to think he has great potential. I just hope he is allowed to develop in keeping with his talents.

Miles added 20:16 - Sep 22
One thing Mick is doing is trying to give confidence to a young lad who's made a massive step up from league 2 to the championship. Nothing wrong with that at all!
