McCarthy: Webster Will Play in the Premier League
Wednesday, 21st Sep 2016 06:00

Town boss Mick McCarthy believes summer signing Adam Webster will go on to play in the Premier League. The 21-year-old, who joined the Blues from Portsmouth in July for £700,000 plus Matt Clarke who moved in the opposite direction, was widely viewed as the man of the match in Saturday’s 0-0 home draw with Aston Villa.

“He’ll go on and play in the Premier League,” McCarthy said. “Hopefully it’s with us, if not it’ll be with somebody else because he’s quick and he can handle the ball.

“Maybe in another team, at Portsmouth he would have been asked to get it and play a bit more, and he can do that.

“We saw that when he played against us [for Pompey in the FA Cup last season], he’s a very capable footballer and he hasn’t done that as much.

“But I think that’s because he’s come up two divisions and he’s learning his trade again.

“What I love about him is he’s bought into our defensive side of the game and he’s got better and better. I’m really pleased with him.”

He added: “He’s a good player, I keep saying that. That’s what I like about him more than anything, his defending. We know he can play, he’s a very talented footballer.”

We understand West Wittering-born Webster’s performance at the weekend caught the eye of watching Premier League scouts, which is not something which would surprise McCarthy.

“People will be watching him, there’s no doubt about that because he can defend but he’s very comfortable with the ball,” he continued. “He can break forward, he’s got two good feet, he’ll play in the Premier League.”

The Town boss spent more money on the 6ft 3in tall former England U18 and U19 international than any other player since he joined the Blues and he says that as a result it’s particularly gratifying to see the move working out.

“It’s always nice, especially if you’ve gone and spent money on them and they turn out to be good," he said.

“If you’re taking free transfers in all the time and Bosmans then you are taking a chance because generally for some reason that’s what they are, but that’s the most we’ve spent on a player. But, to be fair, it looks like it, he’s a good guy.”

McCarthy also reckons that Skuse is a Premiership standard player!
Though I can't recall us turning down any offers from any of those clubs for his services.
You would have thought that would have been the case, if McCarthy's judgement is correct.

Mind, McCarthy doesn't make such wild statements about Chambers as being a quality right back.

Penguin son I suggest you get a grip - one goal conceded in open play in six games.... christ alive.

I assume you want the Milan defence of 95/96 Maldini/ Baresi/ Costa Curta and Panucci. Would that suffice?

Absolute load of drivel come out of some peoples mouths on here unless they're fishing.

Have to agree I am still convinced Penguin Blue has more than a tinge of yellow in the feathers..

Read through the timeline and it must be a quiet day in ITFC world! Webster looks good young player and here's hoping he continues to improve.Like Mings did he will have his dodgy moments but the potential is there.

Poor old MM says something positive and gets slaughtered by some. Still it would be boring if we all thought the same..

Mick and the rest at ITFC have done well in the transfer window and brought in some great players who are ready to get firing and help us push for a decent table position. Time for Mick to get real and start playing them and drop some of his favorites.

As a squad we have a really great potential team with the likes of Bart, Ward, Grant, Lawrence, Williams, Webster, Sears and Best. They just need to all be playing more regularly and not warming the bench.

I think the big thing is MM is a marmite manager and always has been wherever he has been throughout his whole career . He has split supporters opinions at all previous clubs . My previous comment on this is a prime example of it 24 views on it and completely split 50 -50 .

Just personally hate the way that MM says he has signed a footballing centre back but wants him to be less footballing and more defensive , exactly what he has done with so many wingers and creative midfielders

I see AMN was playing as right back for Arsenal last night must have been covering Chambo last season !!

When is he leaving then. He won't be playing football in the premier with Ipswich while McCarthy is in charge.

Dj27 how pathetic and sad are you? Looking at the time people post i normally have a look to see if their is any news on itfc before i go to work i am now posting in my lunch, is that ok?. First things first the website is designed and created so people can share opinions on news storys, if my opinion depresses you i suggest you stay away from my posts, its that simple!
The facts remain the same under MM we play crap football, we will never see promotion. We wont see a cup run, he will comtinue to play his mates out of position to the detriment of the team.( Chambers). Sorry if none of that sounds positive but been a town fan for over 45 years and am no less a town fan than the puppets who follow blindly regardless. I can give you this positive thought, when MM goes the football along with the chance of promotion will return. 100% positive of that.
I cannot stand to see where we are and i am entitled to my opinion.

I really like him. We spent £1.5m max for Webster and Ward and the way they're playing we'll be making at least 4 or 5 times that on each player! Bravo to Mick and his scouts. Hopefully he finds a few more and Marcus Evans backs him up with the cash.

Next on the agenda must be a right back. With Berra looking to head back North for some easier football in Scotland Chambo can move back into the middle. He was absolutely diabolical against Villa the amount of times he gave away possession could and should have cost us. Means the centre back position with be between Smith, Chambers and Webster.

McCarthy in another "xyz, who I signed, is a great player" shocker.
From what I've seen, Webster is the worst centre-half we've ever had at this club.

Great points you make Dissboyitfc. We have a manager who plans to lose cup matches & every league game goes out stifle the game for 85mins & then hopes to "nick it" at the end.
He then tells us "we mugged them" pathetic!! His style of football is years out of date & when you listen to his drivel & his pathetic pet names for his favourites compared to proper football managers when they speak, the likes of Eddie Howe for example, what a contrast. We are going nowhere with McCarthy. The sooner he goes the better!!

Bit early to say just yet...only time will tell, anyway McCarthy reckons Skuse is a Premiership player so on that basis the jury is out!

Went Saturday thought Webster had a very good game , also I thought Lawerence had a good game too . I think people have to be realistic Mick McCarthy in my opinion has done a brilliant job since he has been there . Considering what a mess it was in when he came I felt at the time we where verging on collapse and obscurity to the lower divisions. Having been a Ipswich supporter for nearly 50 years I realise what a great side we had once and saw them numerous times what heady days they where . The reality of the situation is it not a level playing field between the clubs in the professional game , this has been said numerous times but we have to be realistic and support Mick McCarthy and the team all the way . Don't think myself that Mick has been to far way from producing a promotion team but there is work to done.

Good to see MM agree with what I have been saying. If you spend just a very modest fee then it often buys you increased quality. Very clear that's the case with Ward and Webster. Over to Marcus Evans ... Let's do the same in January.

I didn't see anywhere in the above report Mick say that Webster had to just defend and never play out from the back. What he did say was "What I love about him is he's bought into our defensive side of the game and he's got better and better. I'm really pleased with him.”

He added: “He's a good player, I keep saying that. That's what I like about him more than anything, his defending. We know he can play, he's a very talented footballer.”
My interpretation of that is that Mick is saying that a defender is there first of all to defend and is very hapy that Webster has added that to his game Nowhere does Mick say that Webster is banned from ever moving out of defence with the ball. Also as far as bailing out our right back. That is one of the things centre backs are supposed to do. Yes I agree Chambers is not a natural or perfect right back and does make too many errors, but every left or right back we've ever had has made mistakes and been bailed out on occasion by their centre backs. Its called playing as a team!

Hopsters point or order PJ signed Cresswell not Mick but your point none the less signed.

I'd add that MM (well TC but they come as a pair) turned Murphy into an actual goal scorer. Took him from his round hole and put him up top.

As for RB yes needed very much BUT he has had more pressing prioraties to be fair, hes clearly looking though

It is quite clear to me who is deluded.
Penguin Blue OUT.

As far as I can see ,Penguin Blue is far from deluded. What about all the so called supporters on here who watch Ipswich through blue tinted glasses, and believe me there's a lot of them.
The fact is we have a handful of good players and an enept manager, this is not a recipe to get into the premiership.

One decent game and he is a world beater apparently

MM speaks and we are supposed to listen and be impressed.Huge ego.It isn't so long ago that MM said he should be a manager in the Premier League.......Dream on !

Surco said: "Just personally hate the way that MM says he has signed a footballing centre back but wants him to be less footballing and more defensive"

A Centre Back's primary reason for being in the team is to stop the other team scoring. Surely there's nothing wrong with MM wanting his new CB to be even better at defending?

I get the impression Surco that sometimes you would have 11 nippy little No.10's playing if you had the reins yourself.

At least virtually everyone on here agrees with Mick that Adam Webster is a good player,as do I;lets hope we don't sell him in January!

R Ranger can see nothing wrong in what Mick says;but like Pengiun Blue I am bit concerned by Micks remarks.Saying he has bought into the defensive side of the game would be ok,if he had not also said "Maybe in another team he would have been asked to get it and play a bit more".

Like Jimmy 86 I wouldn't like to see him coach this talent out of him as I felt he did with AMN,Tommy Oar,Jonny Parr ,Elliott Hewitt and Uncle Tom Cobbly and all!For as Dissboyitfc says every season its safety and boring hoofball.Yes we do play a bit on the ground;but its McCarthy's overall outlook that bothers me as he is so negative. In my humble opinion,as I am not an experienced Manager,Aston Villa were there for the taking;but he still played two defensive mids, and only went for it with less than 5 mins of normal time left;as he didn't know then that there would be 8 mins added.

Like Hopperblue I also wonder if he would be playing now were it not for Tommys injury.

When he gets these good players in,I am hopeful that we will eventually see, better games of football, with a bit more pass and move, and a bit less hoof;but even though Murph has left this has not changed McCarthy's teams style or outlook.

I am still hopeful;but after 4 years it looks as though I shall remain disappointed whilst this Dinosaur remain in charge.
