Chambers: Probably Our Best Performance of the Season
Monday, 7th Nov 2016 06:00

Delighted skipper and winning goalscorer Luke Chambers believes the Blues played as well as they have at any time this season during Saturday’s 2-1 win at Sheffield Wednesday. The Town captain, who headed his goal three minutes from time, also echoed manager Mick McCarthy’s pre-match message that the Blues will have a more realistic chance of hitting their pre-season target of the play-offs if everyone is pulling in the same direction.

“I think we played really, really well,” Chambers told Ipswich Player HD after Saturday’s match.

“I think we used the ball a lot better. Maybe they let us play or they were a little bit lazy but I think we dominated the game at times, we created chances, especially late in the second half.

“And the fans today were absolutely fantastic and they stuck with us through all of it even when it went to one-all, singing players’ names, the gaffer’s name.

"We’ve got to stick together. I know it’s difficult and frustrating at times, but we all want the best for the football club.”

He added: “It feels brilliant today. It was a massive three points, we needed it because we’ve obviously not had the results we’d have wanted of late.

“We’re delighted, coming off you could see what it meant to all the boys, celebrating [the winning goal] together with all the subs, and even at the end with the gaffer.

“We’ve got to stick together at times like this, we did that today and I felt we gave one of our best performances, if not the best performance, of the season.”

After the Blues and boss McCarthy were given stick by the Town support during last week’s 2-2 home draw with bottom club Rotherham, the Wednesday fans meted out similar treatment to their players at Hillsborough.

Chambers, who hopes Saturday’s victory can jumpstart Town’s season, felt the home supporters’ frustrations had a negative impact on the Owls team.

“Their fans weren’t happy with the way their team played and they weren’t afraid for voice their opinions and it’s very, very difficult and it showed in some of their performances,” the 31-year-old continued.

“Their players were very nervous at times and obviously that didn’t help their performance. We thrived on that a little bit and took belief, especially late in the second half.

“We know how fit we are, we know we’re a fit team and if we continue to stay in games, especially with the so-called better teams, I think we’ve always got a chance, especially as we’ve got a bit of pace on the break.

“To go 1-0 up the way we did, it was a great goal from Tom Lawrence, I thought he was absolutely different class.

“I thought Wardy was fantastic as well, and getting Searsy up top and Didzy back in the team is a massive, massive boost for us.

“I think you’ve seen the team today which performed very well and obviously we’ve got Bish coming back, who is getting his minutes in, but he’s making a big contribution to the team.

“Overall I’m absolutely delighted and I think we thoroughly deserved the three points in the end.”

Regarding his winner, his second vital headed goal of the season, he added: “It was a great delivery from Wardy sticking it in. Berra once again missed the target but thankfully I was there to get him out of jail again!

“I like getting in the box and in the last few games I’ve been thrown up for set pieces and I like to score from open play as well. I’m just trying to get in and help the team.

“But it’s not about me scoring, whoever scored you would have seen the same reaction because at the end of the day we’ve come up here, it took five and a half hours, we stuck together, [on Friday] night we all played pool together.

“At times like this it would be easy for everyone to have little cliques and stuff like that but that’s never happened, especially since I’ve been at the football club.

“The message is for everyone to stick together, but the boys especially, and I think they did over this weekend.

“Now we can look to a couple of days off and look forward to the international break and then look forward to Forest in two weeks’ time.”

Town, who face their skipper's former club Nottingham Forest and managerless QPR at home in their next two games, go into the break in 15th, five points off the play-offs and seven points above the relegation zone.

I keep reading how well we played at Wednesday, I wasn't there. But I haven't heard anyone use the words flowing, expansive, attacking football at all. Going on the stats it was hoof it out and hope the attacking players can get on the end of it. 2 shots on target and 39% procession doesn't inspire me!! I'm glad we won as I don't want to be relegated, but still want McCarthy gone!!! Well done to chambers for standing up for his boss, it is in his best interests as Emmanuel is a far better Rb and a new manager might feel the same.

An away win is always a great result but we should not be getting carried away after only our second win in ten games. The proof will be in the pudding if we can continue to play well and put a streak of wins together.

'We stuck together, on Friday night we all played pool together'. No wonder we can't afford any players, all the money is going on sports psychologists.

MickMillsTash I would say no to Mings being a youth player, he didn't come through the youth team, he was purchased from Chippenham

I really have to give credit where it's due. I've hammered McCarthy as much as most these past few weeks but this was a great win and a sign of positive change with his selection. We played quick attacking wingers, Bishop in the middle and Sears up front. This is exactly what all of us wanted so fair play to MM for doing it. Hopefully it lasts and doesn't panic back into his old ways after one defeat like he did in our play offs season.

Playing players in their best and natural positions and not playing two non creative players in the centre of the pitch and we have our best performance of the season , wow how did MM come up with that one ?
Good result and selection , keep doing the latter more importantly and you may start to win backing back . Do not bring Douglas back in to the squad even if we have a bad game stick with it MM and build our team around the youngsters

Its no coincidence that since DM and JW have been available Mick hasn't picked Douglas and Skuse. together. He very sensibly is trying to make the best use of who he has available and now that he has a surfeit of more attacking creative players he is leaving Douglas out.No doubt if he continues to do this a lot of people will want to take credit for this. He has always said when the p[layers are all back we will try and play a more passing game and as far as I'm concerned that is what is happening. Against Rotherham the team collectively were poor but they were set up to try and play a more expansive game and they happened to make two terrible defensive errors and were punished. If ever there was a game where yopu would expect MM to be defensive my money would have been on Sheff Wed away but he did at least set up a side hat creativity and pace we have in it. I hope and believe that if we keep key players fit the side we saw will be MM's 1st team.

An encouraging win,and a good interview by Luke Chambers, who after all is our Captain;so would expect him to do more interviews.

OwainG1992,of course he is not going to slate Team/fans or Manager in public;but is allowed one slip which somebody referred to earlier.

He has certainly been more diplomatic than his Manager who continues to seem to delight in taking a side swipe at fans who don't always agree with him.

Having been to many grounds in the past, and watching on television.I feel that McCarthy should be grateful that he has fans as tolerant as here at Ipswich, because Wednesday have been on a pretty good run and play attractive football;yet there were boos at the end of the game.

I think' Old Big Head'should appreciate how accommodating the Ipswich supporters are,and not treat any of them with contempt.Respect is mutual.

Bishop has been fit for majority of season and Sears has only played up front for last couple of games that is nothing to do with injuries just down to poor selection and stubborness to continually select Douglas and to play Sears on the left . Obviously some will give credit to MM whatever he does but with less negativity and not playing such a poor pairing together that never worked last season we could actually have more points by now

Good result.I too am not convinced we can go on a decent run but who knows in this league. On another note anyone see JET and Big Frank Nouble ripping it up for Gillingham?

I was at Leeds and the performance was "pass back to Chambers...hoof...lose ball...defend in blind panic. Repeat". However, the game at the STADIUM OF DEATH (Hillsboro) was the opposite. The ball was on the deck, we passed, moved, players made runs to create options, we looked like a team who played football. The defence was organised and we created good chances. Ipswich did not look like the same side. OK you could say the winner was lucky. Chambers didn't seem to know much about the ball from Berra hitting his head but the replay suggests he had a split second to direct it into the goal.

I for one had a cracking time at Hillsboro. The team were more positive. WE PLAYED FOOTBALL. WE WON!!! I ENJOYED IT!! I HAD A GREAT DAY!

If MM can keep this going, and I hope he does, we will definitely go up the table. I am not sure if the playoffs are likely. Newcastle, Brighton and Norwich are my top three teams and they may separate from the following pack. The football was entertaining and good to watch and if the team can do that at Portman Road MM will win some fans back.

Can I just say how much I hate the international break. What chance England play with passion, pace & commitment?

On the subject of which assuming everyone on here is a fan(big assumption I know) I cannot see how Chambo can be criticised for what he has said here? He has commitment & passion to spare and works his backside off every game I see him play. No I wouldn't play at right back either but I don't think team spirit has been an issue under MM.

Great result Saturday. Positive team selection so well done MM. Looking forward I am not convinced but hey I have been wrong before so as always COYB!

Seaside I think that puts the whole thing in perspective for all the angst and discussion at the end of the day it's the three points that wins the support of the fans.
