After claiming his first Town goal in the recent away win over Sheffield Wednesday loanee Tom Lawrence is now looking to add to his tally in the months ahead.

Lawrence netted with a brilliant solo effort at Hillsborough, running through from just into his own half and finishing with a low, right-foot drive that flew past Owls keeper Keiren Westwood and just inside the far post.

It put the Blues on their way to a deserved 2-1 success as he marked his 10th appearance since arriving on a season-long loan from Leicester and the former Manchester United youngster is understandably eager to carry on in a similar vein.

Lawrence, 22, said: “The goal was massive for me and hopefully I can add a few more, starting this weekend against Nottingham Forest.

“It was a big goal for me and for the team because we got back to winning ways. It hadn’t been bothering me that I hadn’t scored because playing well is what matters. I had also been creating goals for other people so it was all good.

“I don’t really know if it’s the best I have scored in my career. It’s definitely up there but the main thing is that the ball went in the back of the net.

“That’s what I was most happy about. I’ve watched it back a few times and had a few tweets from people. It was good to get a few messages.”

It was an eye-catching effort because Lawrence looked so comfortable as he steered a path past several defenders before letting fly with an unstoppable shot.

“I’ve always been comfortable running with the ball and I like to drive at the opposing defence. I’m aiming to do it a lot more while I’m here.

“But I’m not going to set targets and I don’t like to put a number on it. I just want to score as many as I can.

“That goes for assists as well because I think they are just as important as goals. The gaffer likes us to go forward and get us playing so if we can carry on like that it will be just fine.”

Lawrence, who is pleased to have featured so regularly in manager Mick McCarthy’s starting line-up in recent weeks, has shown a keen appetite for hard work and done his defensive duties. He added: “I came here to play games and the gaffer has shown faith in me. Hopefully, I’m paying it back.

“I have never played for any team and not had to be aware of my defensive responsibilities. That just comes naturally to me and I don’t mind it at all.

“My coach when I was at Manchester United, Warren Joyce, demanded it as well and it’s not a problem for me. I think you need at least a little bit of fire in you to succeed and I’ve had it from an early age. It’s not a bad thing.”
