McCarthy Hopes Derby Performance and Result Will Help Mend Relationship With Fans
Monday, 27th Feb 2017 12:00

Town boss Mick McCarthy hopes the Blues’ performance in Sunday’s derby with Norwich City at Carrow Road and the 1-1 result will help repair a relationship with supporters which he admits has been “broken at times”.

January, during which Town exited the FA Cup at the hands of non-league Lincoln City, marked a low point in the 58-year-old's four and a half years at Portman Road with various polls, including one on TWTD, indicating that the vast majority of fans felt it was time that McCarthy, who celebrates his 25th year in management next month, moved on.

The Town boss himself said he would consider his future in the summer, despite having another year on his contract and the club having an option for a further two seasons.

But February has seen an upturn in form with the Blues taking seven points from five unbeaten games having drawn with three of the Championship’s top five - leaders Brighton, fourth-placed Leeds and Reading in fifth - and at Norwich, who are eighth, as well as inflicting Aston Villa’s first home defeat of the season.

"I would hope that performance and result goes a long way to repairing our relationship with the fans," the Town boss told BBC Radio Suffolk after yesterday’s game.

"It's been broken at times. They've not enjoyed it, they've not been watching good, attractive, winning football. I get that, I've not been enjoying it particularly.

“So, over the last five games I think they've seen us play really well, and I would think helping stop Norwich in their tracks during a promotion push will endear us to our fans a little bit more."

fair result in the end 1-1 mick was playing for a draw towards the end.
views still not changed yet. Ipswich staying up but going no where different. OldClactonBlue how can you say that about Bart when he was a hero in that game.

Dear oh dear, some of the commentators on here just don't get it do they, if you pay 100,000 for a donkey and 3 million for a race horse and enter them into the same race who is going to win. MM has been starved of cash by the owner of ITFC for years and is getting the best out of the Donkeys that he has

If we'd have pinched a win maybe I could understand this comment. But a draw (which is still pleasing) and a relatively poor performance - no that doesn't make up for two years of dross.

Yes you've had sweet FA to spend so you've done quite well in terms of results, but that doesn't justify us looking to sneak draws in games against lower teams including non-league, and refusing to allow the team to pass, insisting on hoofing even when there's no longer a big man up top. Lincoln proved you don't need money to be able to pass.

Mick can leave with his head held high and we can applaud him, but personally I'd rather someone ambitious and hungry come in.

Sorry, my issue is, and has never been with the players, its you Dino. I will never accept you as manager now, too much water and all that. Its taken you 18 months to realise that Douglas is poor and that Chambers is a centre back, another two years to realise Bart is better than Gerken etc
Ooh and us fans are dim...
As for the Dino inners, its not about the money, Barnsley, Brentford, Preston are testament to that, but they have more flexible minded managers prepared to try and win games.
Sorry, do one Dino

Goalkeeper is very good
Defence is ok, and will get better next season, even without additions
Midfield looks so much better when we field 2 creative players , we have the talent (especiallyif we can sign huws) to do ok with it
Up front, we are just not good enough - McGoldrick is an excellent player, Pitman scores but not much else, Sears is not quite good enough
We need to spend a couple of million in this area (whuich tbf is what We were trying to do in January)
We got a point yesterday, but I really didn't enjoy the spectacle.
Have we been involved in a great game this season?

Undoubted MM has had his hands tied financially in the transfer windows but what we are all overlooking is that the team that has picked up these decent results in February and they are a set of decent results given the fixtures and our confidence going into them is that Huws and Diagouraga aside the rest of the players have been available all season .
The fact that we are playing to our squad strengths with three centre backs ,Chambers is playing in the centre has been a massive boost , having a natural right back in Emmanuel or Spence not much between them , Knudsen playing more centrally where he doesn't get caught out of position has stopped a number of crosses coming into the area from that side with Kenlock playing , Skuse and Douglas not playing together or at all has been a massive bonus , Sears playing up front instead of on the wing .
All of these things could have been done a long time ago and it has nothing to do with money it has to do with team set up , players playing in natural roles and being more positive .
Still personally think we should be giving more game time to our youngsters the likes of Bishop and Dozzell as realistically we are safe now and Lawrence wont be here next season and probably Huws either as we have still only won 2 games this year , personally would like to see someone else given the chance in the summer

You have nothing to prove to me Mick.
I have backed you throughout this season, its my job to follow and support my club, Ipswich Til I Die.
I am firmly in the Mick in camp.

I like Mick but I knew from the beginning he wasn't the right person for our club long term - he was what we needed 4 & a half years ago and he has done an incredible job on virtually zero money.

But for me,even if Marcus decides to plough £10m into the squad during the summer,I still don't think the style of football would improve under McCarthy..it'll be more of the same, playing for a draw and hoping the likes of a Ryan Fraser,Daryl Murphy or Tom Lawrence can nick a goal.

Some big decisions for our manager and our owner in the coming months...I personally am not letting myself get carried away with the last 5 results - we've still only won 1 of the last 9 and continue to struggle in front of goal...I don't want to go through another abysmal season watching this style of football.

I don't think we need to invest ridiculous money either - if we can keep 80% of this squad together and spend £2 or £3m on 4 or 5 of the best players from leagues 1 & 2 over the summer then I think we could and should be challenging for the play-offs next season, preferably playing the kind of football we all crave...Burley managed that on practically zero budget year after year.

McCarthy will keep us afloat with zero budget but is that what we've come to?

*Plus I didn't realise Ed Sheeran was a town fan - any chance of him becoming our Elton John?

It would be great if we could do a deal too keep a couple off are loan players seeing as they are not getting a look in at their parent club. We need too start setting up a team for next season and let's keep using are young players.

Phil, I know you normally only do Manager polls when its getting obvious the manager has had his time but would be interesting to do another one to see how the mood on here has changed if at all.

I have been a staunch supporter of Mick but did believe in January it was time for change but after yesterdays match I am changing my mind. Lets not forget in this league to go up you need to win at home draw away and the performance yesterday was a perfect away match, soak up the pressure and counter which we did very well.

Interesting views for a Monday from many on here. What a lot of you pro MM posters are not getting is it's not all about the results, although it will keep fans happy to a point, but from my point of view it's more about progression and entertainment, or the lack of it under MM. If any of you fellas say you would honestly be happy paying good money to attending games home or away and feel like you are getting value for that money, then your views are welcome.
It's been an impressive month no doubting that, but hoofball is still very much evident.

BergholtBru- if your going to get abusive fella then at least do it with some style, using playground names like "clueless numpty head" puts you in a very sad light indeed!!!!!

Let's judge him on the remainder of the season if Didzy stays fit and Bishop comes into the fray. The home match against Fulham was one of the most painful to watch, but recent results and performances show how players performances can turn around, and an injection of new blood and key players from injury can energise things. The Skuse/Douglas axis is hopefully now broken and Sears won't be confined to left wing duty. If we could afford a few more Didzy's in the summer or Bishop's body strengthens we'll see the creativity from the team again. We don't know for sure Lawrence won't be a player we can buy in the summer. Who knows what Leicester will do. Did we think they were gonna sack Ranieri after winning the Premiership in such fine style? Huws obviously loves playing for us, so will try his darnest to come join us. It wasn't that long ago Daryl Murphy was banging them in for us and Sears was running riot at many an away game. We've had alot of players off form and probably a manager playing it safe, when he knew these players weren't cutting the mustard. It's a been a good window of loans and picking up players who weren't playing. Let's finish the season off well, and look to add to those weak areas. Until we're able to attract a paul clement calibre of manager we've gotta get behind the team

Totalblue ... your theory is great and a good away point , where it is let down is the fact we have been so negative at home for majority of season and only won 6 games . Rotherham have played 18 away games this year and have 1 point , guess where that came from ?

For me we have an honest and experienced manager and a very honest group of players who always give their all, even if they sometimes struggle for fluency in their football. Someone queried why a Sunday league team can play passing football and we cant. The answer is we can all look good players if we get sufficient time on the ball. You dont always get that in the Championship or PL. That is what you pay big fees for, the quality to be able to play under pressure.

We have done very well to put a good group of defensive players and GK's together for almost free. Thats more difficult at the top end, but we got a jewel in McGoldrick, and dont forget the millions ME & MM turned down for him.

It is sad to see the continued slating by some behind a cloak of anonymity of Skuse, Douglas and Chambers. Those players have each been selected more than 400 times in league football, some more than 500. Do those that abuse have the experience or knowledge of the multiple managers who selected them. Making such criticisms only give fans a bad name. Skuse is an excellent championship DC M, and anyone that doesnt appreciate that simply doesnt know the position.

Fans pretending to know more than a manager with 25 years experience is laughable. By all means have an opinion, but it was the managers opinion and judgement which brought all of yesterdays starting 11 to the club (bar Chambers), including Bart, whose signing in my view also brought the best out of Gerken, which often happens when good competition comes in. As for Chambers at FB, defensively there is only about 5 metres between RB and RCB in a three, and playing a CB at FB in a team with limited resources is a very common ploy. As for players out of position, I think Knudsen has done more than OK in not his normal position.

We have the longest serving manager in the Championship, that stability to me puts us at an advantage over other teams (including Norwich), whose managers are constantly looking over their shoulders. When this club had its major successes in past years, they were also built on stability, with comparatively more resources, which hopefully will be forthcoming during the summer.

Surco, I fully agree with you. Sadly we have to write off this season and take what positives we can. The rest of the season Mick MUST prove that he can get the players achieving that sort of return if not it is time for him to step aside, but I for one would be very grateful to the man for what he has achieved up till this season.

BBG, when have we had comparatively more resources, other than under Keane/Jewell
Don't think we've ever had resources
We've always been (had to be) thrifty

I think you've missed the point. It wasn't a comment about Bart's performance, God knows where we would be without him. It was a statement about the style of play, which I presume comes from the management. He can't pass to anyone if they all run away!
When the keeper has the ball you have possession and if you keep possession you are likely to be much more successful. As well as easier on the eye.

I think some of you need a serious reality check here, £57 million spent by that lot up the road compared with £1 million by us, I couldn't see it on their own patch yesterday.

Mick continues to work magic, those that really know the game can see that. Others just moan for the sake of it...

@bbg quote "a manager with 25 years experience" there is a vast difference between 25 years experience and 1 years experience 25 times. As shown in the case of playing Chambers at RB and selecting Douglas past experience does not seem to show that McCarthy learns from experience.

Quote "We have the longest serving manager in the Championship, that stability to me puts us at an advantage over other teams" Afraid it doesn't in McCarthy's case it just makes the opposing manager's job easier when predicting out method (Can't use the word style) of play. For stability read predictability.

bbq ... what relevance does the amount of games a player has played got to do with form or ability to play at this level anymore ? Mick Mills played for us more than anyone he wouldn't be able to do a job now ,
Douglas ' legs had gone last season he is worse this year and his constant selection alongside a similar player in Skuse resulted in us not scoring for hours in the middle of the season .
Chambers had the fans on his back for his poor performances playing out of position , he has now been moved only because of injury and suddenly looks the good player he was a few seasons back .
It took injury to get Bart back in goal last season not some master stroke of management .
As you say MM did bring these players to the club but if he had played them in the formation we have been playing over the last 5 games we would probably being pushing the play offs now rather than low mid table
