McCarthy Hopes Derby Performance and Result Will Help Mend Relationship With Fans
Monday, 27th Feb 2017 12:00

Town boss Mick McCarthy hopes the Blues’ performance in Sunday’s derby with Norwich City at Carrow Road and the 1-1 result will help repair a relationship with supporters which he admits has been “broken at times”.

January, during which Town exited the FA Cup at the hands of non-league Lincoln City, marked a low point in the 58-year-old's four and a half years at Portman Road with various polls, including one on TWTD, indicating that the vast majority of fans felt it was time that McCarthy, who celebrates his 25th year in management next month, moved on.

The Town boss himself said he would consider his future in the summer, despite having another year on his contract and the club having an option for a further two seasons.

But February has seen an upturn in form with the Blues taking seven points from five unbeaten games having drawn with three of the Championship’s top five - leaders Brighton, fourth-placed Leeds and Reading in fifth - and at Norwich, who are eighth, as well as inflicting Aston Villa’s first home defeat of the season.

"I would hope that performance and result goes a long way to repairing our relationship with the fans," the Town boss told BBC Radio Suffolk after yesterday’s game.

"It's been broken at times. They've not enjoyed it, they've not been watching good, attractive, winning football. I get that, I've not been enjoying it particularly.

“So, over the last five games I think they've seen us play really well, and I would think helping stop Norwich in their tracks during a promotion push will endear us to our fans a little bit more."

On the subject if money and budgets, I can buy parts for my car at a premium price from a main dealer or I could get them a lot cheaper from a local motor factor. If fitted correctly they will both do the same job equally as well as each other. Anyone get my point?

Although not a massive mick fan and have pulled my hair out most of the year , most of it is down to his stubbornness more than footballing know how . Playing people out of position and plying favourites is down right stupid and for the last few weeks we have seen the improvement and this confirms that . That said , what worries me most is changing the manager is not a guarantee that things get better , ask Birmingham , villa , forest Portsmouth etc . There is always of course the Gary Monk argument but nothing is sure . Nor is ploughing millions at the job . Again ask villa fans and also the scum up the road

And they still can't beat us

Theyve never won anything !!!! They will ALWAYS be trying to achieve that which they never will.

We are competing in an uneven league they can't compete with everything in their favour.

None of this means Dino should stay coz his tactics are still fundamentally "not to lose" has fumbled upon a better set up but it doesn't sit comfortably with him. Still want us to bring in Gary Rowett, play attacking football and massively improve the squad. We nicked a point because they are shocking with all the cards stacked in their favour. The players we have will get nowhere near the premier league and an upgrade is required throughout. Much improved in February let's hope it continues.

Well done all.

For all those who point to MM's success at Wolves and Sunderland where he had funding please remember that after two good seasons (same here!) his style and management found him out.
I've not heard anything that'll convince me that he will change and that is his weakness. He'll plough on regardless with not lose attitude. I want a manager that believes he'll win not tell us what a good team the opposition is or much he likes their manager.
Also I don't want a manager that seems happy to trawl Ireland or rely on mates for future stars. The world is much wider now but we're missing out. Need another Robson asap

Sad times to be an itfc fan of a certain generation, draw with norwich and we all should be thankful to the manager, you dont get silverware or promotion drawing matches, mick is a decent championship manager and thats all itfc will be if he stays. STILL MICK OUT.

A few need to recognise the job Sean Dyche has done at Burnley on limited resources. On the build up to their automatic promotion in 2013/14 (previous to that they were mid-table dwellers) Vokes and Ings (from league 1 Bournemouth) were bought for 350k and 800k respectively in 2011 and 2012 with Kieran Trippier joining for 500k in 2012. In the actual season they were promoted they only had 1 PERMANENT signing - Ashley Barnes for a modest fee from Brighton and had Heaton (gk) and Arfield as freebies, Jason Shackell from Derby in 2011 for near £1M - overall relatively small expenditure and some shrewd signings by Dyche and considering the sale of Jay Rodriguez to Southampton for nearly £7M in 2012 they were in profit near to some £5M - incredible.

Money is not the be all and end all (though it helps as the above has shown) - McCarthy's type of management is in question, how many clubs do you see being promoted with a defensive lets not get beaten attitude? a season wasted if he's here in August.

Mick has done a lot better this month but I have to say I wasn't as bowled over by the Derby performance as some seem to be. I watched the match with 3 neutral fans and they all kept saying to me how woeful we looked. And it was hard to argue with them, because in all truth we did look pretty crap in terms of overall quality! Norwich weren't exactly playing champagne football either. It was a scrappy game devoid in large parts of quality. I know derby matches can be like that but I just felt the game was crying out for somebody to inject some quality. After the match we switched over and watched Spurs against Stoke and within 5 minutes the difference in the quality of football was so apparent. I got to my friend's house at 11.30am and was literally shaking with excitement about the match. But within about 10 minutes of the game having kicked off I started to feel flat as we just didn't look like we were going to do much. A hard-earned point is still a million times better than a defeat but to try and define the match as some awe-inspiring performance doesn't cut it with me. Look at Southampton yesterday, they played Utd off the park and yet somehow still came up empty handed. But they won a lot of fans with that performance. Sitting with a few neutrals yesterday it became apparent we are never going to win over any fans with McCarthy's style of play as it's just not very pretty. He does deserve credit for the improved performances this month but when he started Skuse yesterday I wasn't best pleased and some of my goodwill towards him evaporated. And I didn't think Skuse had a very good game at all. Lots of people seem to think he played a blinder but personally I thought he was very average at best. So while I'm pleased not to have been beaten, nonetheless, still our wait for win against Norwich goes on and I won't rejoice until we have finally beaten them. I would of liked to have seen us going there with more positive intent and try and win the match rather than contain a team that got turned over by Burton Albion the week before. All this rubbish about Norwich's team is worth this and that. Well that didn't count for zip against Burton Albion did it!

TimmyH, absolutely agree about Dyche's quality as a manager, but if he was to leave Burnley, I don't think it will be to a championship club. Your figures are however a bit selective. You cannot ignore that they had spent money before he arrived, so he didn't take over a team at the bottom of the championship. They have also had the capacity to reinvest the profit made on players sold which we haven't.

They spent over £7m 2009/10 and reinvested in subsequent years the profit made on Steven Fletcher who they sold a year or two later for over £6m. They spent another couple of million at least 2010/2011, which doesn't include an undisclosed fee for Charlie Austin, who we are believed to have had a £2m bid in for during early 2011. They spent £9.5m 2014/2015 and €13.4m 2015/16. They have used parachute payments wisely in recent years,

As for style of play, it is gradually improving as the quality of players improve, but early in his tenure they played direct football to Vokes and Ings, and apart from Trippier their defenders (Duff, Mee, etc) weren't any more cultured or adept at passing through the midfield than ours. They are an example of what can be achieved with good management, good scouting and a reasonable level of investment. Don't forget our manager achieved a couple of promotions as well and I don't see any reason why he wouldn't do so again with a bit of support.

Broken at time? Broken for 2 seasons more like you utter moron.
What planet is the Dinosaur on. Norwich are a dreadfull team and you counld not beat them home or away.
Our once proud club is being run into the ground by this farce of a manager and farce of an owner.
Sack the lot of them, let the fans take over and appoint a proper manager.
Resign now Dinosaur. CNT.

Well this 'clueless numpty head' still wants Mick out!
Wahoo, a point at Norwich but the game was there for the taking. They were poor and had mick gone more offensive.....i honestly think we would have won but oh no, he sets up for the draw. Reverted back to type!
Time for a change and the sooner our negative, arrogant manager Mcarfy goes....the better!

Firstly I'm really glad we didn't lose to the scum. And by full time I was pretty relieved to come away with a draw.

I think I've only managed to catch 3 or 4 games on TV this season, we'd lost the other 3, but I thought we were pretty poor. We very rarely strung 3 or 4 passes together going forward. I was actually shocked how bad we looked given the recent results.

Bart was outstanding, I thought McGoldrick was good, but he kept having to drop so deep to get the ball that we had on one up front. I was very disappointed in Sears - he ran around a lot but that was about it. Ward was the pick of the midfield for me. Skuse was also poor, don't think he defended particularly well and only saw him play one successful pass forward to a team mate in the whole match.

Moore looked out of his depth when he came on, struggled to even control the ball. I see him as a poor mans Frank Nouble - and we all know how bad he was!

Be good to get Lawrence back again.

It's simple really we need the money to compete next season with the likes of Norwich, sheff we'd, Villa, Derby, Leeds but do fancy them going up still.
If Mick stays why can't Evans give him 5 million to spend start of next season & if we need more reinforcements in Jan then give him another 5 mill.
Can't see why Evans isn't given him money, Keane & Jewell had enough out of him. Think Mick would sign some good players like he has already.
Would fancy the midfield pair Huws & the Leeds bloke. Still got our youngsters to come through Dozzell, Bishop maybe Benyu.
On the Norwich game Mick went for a draw & we got it so fair play to him & the team. If they didn't equalise so soon after our goal I think we would of went on to win it, because their fans would of been on their backs.
Doesn't matter how many chances you have in a game it's about putting them away & we put our once chance away which to me feels great.
Bart was brilliant & will be hard to keep hold of him in the summer.
A bit of cash injection next year & I'm sure we will be up there, if not then Evans has got to go not Mick!!!
Bring in a money man who flashes the cash👍

bbq ... you keep referring back to money and comparing our team value to Norwich and others . How much did the Lincoln side that outplayed us twice cost compared to ours ?

Interesting comments... Divide between those who think MM has done well, and those pointing out he consistently plays players out of position to their detriment.

It is crazy that it took injury to DG to get Bart back in nets when it takes about 30mins to see he is a much better all-round keeper than Gerken. That alone does show how stubborn MM is!!

Great point against the scum by the lads for us fans thanks.
Sorry Mick you have to be judged on the entire season negative hoof ball tactics playing players out of position and Douglas and Skuse at the same time is his fault and was to stubborn to change it.
Yes the main person to blame is Evans for his lack of investment on the pitch.
But it is not all about money Lincoln play attractive football with a small budget.
Change is needed but it has to be right for the club, just look at Birmingham and where they are now that is bad planning Rowett was doing a great job and should have been given more time. We need more from our academy and let our club be run like Bobby Robson did playing great attacking football which was so entertaining to watch.

Don't kid your self Mr McCarthy that our performance was anything special as it wasn't....quality of our football as usual was poor and woeful and typical really of the style played under you. We were on the back foot...1 shot on goal tells the tale....and as usual you set the team up to "Defend" a point as it is all you are good for and we resorted to hoofing more or less. Your time is up and the club should be looking for a new enterprising young forward thinking manager to take over as soon as possible..I would make the change now as we won't get anything from this season..and we won't get anything out of our manager in the future.
