Coke to Be Released
Wednesday, 1st Mar 2017 13:41

Town boss Mick McCarthy has confirmed that midfielder Giles Coke will be released at the end of the season, the 30-year-old having missed the whole of the campaign with knee problems which have required a number of operations.

“He’s injured, he won’t be involved and he’ll be released at the end of the season,” McCarthy said.

Coke joined the Blues on a free transfer in the summer of 2015 after being released by Sheffield Wednesday having impressed during a trial, but made only four starts - one in the Championship - and nine sub appearances during 2015/16 without scoring.

....... it should be remembered that McCarthy has brought in players and expected them to adapt to his (style ?) of play - which invariably involves nullifying flair and creativity, with the focus instead being on DEFENCE - plus often being expected to play totally out of position.

Some players can adapt, and do there best - others find it destroys their game strengths and cannot do so.

Seen all too often with McCarthy unfortunately - far to many examples to list.

Squad player, every team needs them to fill out the squad and provide cover, added a bit of experience.
He's been unlucky with injury.
Not every signing will be a worldy, not every squad player can be the next star.

I don't think he's been a bad player to have around the place.

Wish him all the best.

Mick had already said this previously I thought a while ago. I suspect the only reason he is still here is because of a duty of care and a need for him to build up fitness.

I would expect another story about Best next.

I have nothing against Coke personally; after all I have never met him.

The trouble is that he was a poor signing and he has done predictably little here.

I know that all managers have their transfer mistakes, but MM's seems to be longer than most.

Nothing against Coke, but he shouldn't have been playing at this level. York City (the other option at the time) in retrospect would have been the better option. Sadly completely out of place at the club, and might go down in club history for all the wrong reasons.

I thought JD and Coke would work well together, they normally do. But definitely not on this occasion!

Wish him the best as he's going to find it tough out there.Three much better players ; Tabb, Toure and Cameron Stewart were both released a long while back now and have not found new clubs. Fear the same for Coke, even more so that he's carrying a long term injury.

Good man around the place with a good sense of humour by the sounds of things so will be missed by the squad, even joked regularly about the fact that he always wore the "special jersey" during training (when fit). He just wasn't a Championship player and it's not his fault that he ended up with us, agents always work hard to see what they can get.

I do wonder whether he was ever fully fit. His performances always suggested that something wasn't right. Looked the part but so easily robbed and passed too often to opposition.

Tough to compare players across generations also. Coke played 10 league games for us and 3 cup games (13 appearances total for those bad at maths!). He played more minutes of first team football than Toure, Karic, Le Pen, Alabi, Mark Fish, Bruce Twamley, Dylan Connolly and jack Doherty combined. We saw a lot more of his play than some of these other players, so hard to judge.

He admitted when he first signed that he wasn't the type to put his all in on the training pitch, so never ever thought he would do well by McCarthy principles. Next step Col Utd!
