Garner Confirmation Close
Wednesday, 14th Jun 2017 15:16

Town target Joe Garner has undergone his Blues medical and the striker's £1 million move from Rangers will be confirmed either this afternoon or tomorrow. On Sunday, TWTD was first to reveal that the Blues were closing in on signing the 29-year-old.

Garner is understood to have agreed a three-year deal at Portman Road with only minor details relating to the switch still to be tied up.

The former Preston striker will be keen to get the move tied up as swiftly as possible as he is getting married in his native Lancashire on Friday.

Garner moved to Ibrox from Preston for £1.4 million last summer, when Town we understand were also interested, signing a three-year contract.

The former England U16, U17 and U19 international scored 10 goals in 22 starts and 12 sub appearances during 2016/17.

Garner started his career with his hometown club Blackburn Rovers but was unable to break into the first team prior to moving on to Carlisle, initially on loan, then Nottingham Forest, Huddersfield (loan), Scunthorpe (loan), Watford and Carlisle for a further loan spell before joining Preston in 2013.

While with the Lilywhites the 5ft 10in tall frontman scored a 20-minute second-half hat-trick as the Lancastrians beat the Blues 3-2 in an FA Cup third round replay at Deepdale in January 2014.

The following season Garner won the League One Player of the Year award as he helped Preston into the Championship via the play-offs.

Meanwhile, Town boss Mick McCarthy flew back to the UK from his holiday home in Florida yesterday, although is not expected to be back at Portman Road until next week.

I can't help but laugh each time we get an update on this transfer. Can we just get it sorted please! My cynical mind is awaiting this falling through last minute.

Mark Lawrenson says he's class but lacks goals.

That's good then.

Hope that marriage will calm him down a bit,as Lorro says he does get booked a lot.

I think he has as much chance of doing well as he has of being a waste of money;so am hoping it is the former.

Note that Mick has just returned home from across the 'pond'.

Wonder if the meeting took place before he went away,or perhaps Marcus has waited until he returned;as he didn't want to spoil his holiday?

Hope springs eternal !!!

The only thing that will get me excited regarding ITFC is MM being shown the door. I hope this new guy is a successful signing though!

Obviously nobody else was interested...paying out £1M might be going overboard, 10 goals most probably against the likes of Hamilton, Ross County and Partick Thistle.

Only time will tell...

A fairly uninspiring signing but as always I will back any new player in the blue shirt.

We really know how to prolong a signing, don't we? Feels like we have signed 3 players, not 1....

Words we don't want to hear in next couple of days:

"Bristol City (or another Championship or high league 1 team) also interested in Garner"

Ollie Watkins is a great shout. Will definitely be leaving Exeter this summer. Wanted to leave in January to move up a league or 2 but was persuaded to stay to help with the play off push Exeter made. I live in Exeter and would be surprised if Exeter rejected anything in the 1-2 million region. Very talented player who would probably walk into our starting 11.

Sean Raggett from Lincoln City is also another great possibility (given that we have lost Berra and Digby). Seems to be linked a lot with WBA, but can't see him stepping up immediately into a mid-table Premiership side. Did brilliantly against Burnley in the cup, and was said to be the key behind their league and cup success.

As usual lots of negativity on here its obvious McCarthy is going no where, they have lowered the cost of match day tickets which most asked for, they have bought a player with obviously more to follow so why don't we get behind the team at least for the first few games.

Saints have sacked their manager because of his negative style of tactics and the supporters complaining after one season which brought a comfortable premiership finish and a cup final appearance .
We have 4 seasons of negative anti football , crowds dropping and MM still has a job you couldn't make it up

Blinking heck, Terry Griffiths and Peter Ebdon could play a snooker filled match quicker than it's taking for us to get this deal done. Maybe Lawro has persuaded Preston to go back in for him. Why do we always make such a meal out of signing anybody!? The only deals we seem to be able to get done reasonably quick are for 10 grand non-league players! How about when George Boyd was going to sign, that was the last time I was really excited about us signing a player, and look what happened there, all went to s**t at the last minute!

@Midastouch

Gone "Tits up"?! .... Hmmm you mean like THIS:

Nahhh probably not :-) lol ... Rather it's seemingly just the notorious ITFC **circusike** way of drawing out the suspense!

Ooops I meant @Howdonblue

You know guys it actually can be a little confusing (in times of haste or if being abrupted while reading), that you 2 'proper blokes' now have the same avatar , especially if your posts follow one another! :-)
