McCarthy: Wonderful Finish By Celina But Result Tough on Burton
Saturday, 28th Oct 2017 18:24

Town boss Mick McCarthy hailed sub Bersant Celina’s “wonderful finish” 89th minute freekick winner during the 2-1 victory at Burton but admitted the result was tough on the Brewers, who had deservedly led 1-0.

Asked whether the script written was when Celina stepped up to take the freekick, the Town fans having spent much of the half calling for the on-loan Manchester City winger’s introduction, he said: “I don’t know but I’m glad it turned out that way.”

Moving on to the terrace calls for Celina to be brought on, he added: “I don’t give a s––e about that, by the way. They don’t go on because of that, let me clear that up.

“In fact there’s more chance of him not going on when they start telling me what to do. And yes, I am a belligerent f–, let’s just clear that up.

“He’d every chance of going on when the game gets stretched. I don’t think it’s a game for him, when we’re having to head balls out and fight and scrap but with 10 minutes to play it is, strangely enough.

“I though Wardy did well and Kevin Bru did well and Bersant, it was a wonderful finish and he's celebrated with the fans and thrown his shirt in and they all love him. He’s maybe given the bird to me with the jump but I don’t mind that, that’s what he’s paid for. He goes on, scores the goal, he’s the hero, fabulous.

“Tell you what, there were some other heroes there today that kept a clean sheet to half-time and kept it to the score it was. They enabled him to do that, good luck to him, he was brilliant.”

McCarthy admitted that the Blues needed a result going into the match - “For sure, absolutely” - and conceded that much of the afternoon was tough for his team: “At half-time I was tempted to change it then. Not to put Bersant on, just in case you’re thinking that, but Kevin Bru I’d considered.

“I spoke to TC and he made the point that it was the toughest 45 minutes we’d had, certainly with the conditions, [so we decided] let’s see how we get on, enough time to give them a fair crack of the whip.

“I thought Tristan had a tough time today but he’s been brilliant, he’s 17, and it was hard. We played great last week and we got f– all. We’ve not played well today and won. I’ll give all credit to my players for scrapping it out because we’ve had to.”

He agreed that Burton can feel hard done by: “Absolutely, but it’s not breaking my heart, I have to be honest.”

Quizzed on Celina’s somewhat ambiguous tweet - “Two months until new year. Can’t wait” - which some have taken to mean he’s itching for his spell with Town to end early in January, McCarthy said: “He’s factually correct, isn’t he? He’s a f–-ing brighter lad than I thought he was!

“He’s our player and he might play at Cardiff and he’ll be happy then, won't he? Good luck to him.”

McCarthy confirmed that his loan is for the season - “For 12 months” - and the deal is likely to be along the lines of Tom Lawrence's spell last season which could have been cut short in January but only if agreed by all three parties, the two clubs and the player.

When questioned whether the Kosovo international is frustrated, the Town boss responded: “Ask him.”

Has he said he is to McCarthy, having said he felt his time had come earlier in the season?

“He is [a confident young man], and I’ve also got 18, 19, 20 others that I have to take care of as well.”

The Town boss says he fully understands why fans have taken to him: “I do and I like him when he does that. He’s done great today, hasn’t he? I’m really delighted with him.”

Regarding the derogatory chants aimed in his own direction by the Town support, something which he hoped wouldn’t resurface this season, McCarthy added: “Listen, unless somebody decides otherwise, you’ve got me, boring old big nose, f–-ing fart with 's–-e football' until May. Unless somebody decides different.”

Does it bother him? “It hurts me for the players because it can affect them. It doesn’t affect me, I have to be honest.

“I’d prefer it the other way when we changed the hit parade for six games, but it’s back. I can tolerate it.”

Kevin Bru made his first appearance of the season from the bench and impressed his manager: “He was great, wasn’t he? I said to everybody, in front of all the players, I was delighted with him.

“His attitude has been great. Mind, he hasn’t been ostracised, he’s not been asked to train with the kids, he’s not been pushed out, he’s been training with us and been away and done his international stuff. Really thrilled with him, he deserves a lot of credit for the way he’s played today.”

Does the performance put the Mauritius international, who was told he could move on in the summer, back in his thoughts? “Quite clearly he’s never been out of my thoughts as he’s played today.

“Circumstances dictate certain things. Emyr Huws is injured, Tom Adeyemi’s injured, Teddy Bishop’s injured, Luke Hyam’s injured.

“I’ve got two teenagers [Tristan Nydam and Flynn Downes] who have been doing great but it gets tough for them in the Championship and I thought it was a day to have him on the bench and contribute if necessary, which he’s done. I thought he was good.”

Martyn Waghorn took his total to seven for the season since joining from Rangers with the equaliser.

“Let’s hope that continues, he’s been excellent, everybody’s pleased with him,” McCarthy said.

“He did great with the goal because he was unhappy with their goal because we had a throw-in and it ended up as a corner. And between him and the thrower we lost it and it ends up as a corner and it ends up in our net.

“He wasn’t best pleased, so he made up for that. Good luck to Bersant, he gets the headlines today, it’s wonderful.”

Burton boss Nigel Clough admitted it hurt to lose the game: “That’s going to sting for a while, an awful long while. It was very, very harsh to lose that game today on the balance of the play and balance of the effort that went in, chances created and everything else.

“We scored a goal, we haven’t done that in five and a half games, so that was a bonus, but we should have scored more than one today.

“It wasn’t just chances, it was situations leading to chances. We had great situations in the first half today and didn’t make chances out of them.

“But then we got the goal and there is an element of it not dropping for us in the penalty area without a doubt. And you look at their first goal, the cross has gone in, it’s been half-cleared and it’s just dropped straight in Waghorn’s path. We’d like one to drop for us like that.”

As I have stated on numberous occasions, I don't have much of a problem with our foul mouthed Dinos post match rants, kind of enjoy them to be honest, after all it's football and part and parcel of the working persons game. What I find very disrespectful is his rant was aimed at fans who attended yesterday's game, in most cases I would imagine, the core of our most loyal supporters who attend away games and for that reason hes bang out of order. If ever a manager is guilty of shooting himself in the foot then the Dinos come up trumps on that one, which is fine by me as I want him gone more than any other manager in my forty odd years of supporting ITFC.
Seasider - shame our Dino can't dominate possession like you have this thread, pure quality, but don't ever feel the need to apologise for anything on this site!!!!

Mick states that a game where you ”have to fight and scrap ” is not one for Celina. But maybe if he came on from the start, we wouldn't be in that position in the first place. Clearly, there is no love lost between the two, and the chances must be high Celina will be off in January. But then Mick is stubborn, so he may just decide to keep him to show who is boss. Although Mick overall has done a reasonable job given the lack of financial support, I don't like the atmosphete around our club, and I hope we move on in May. I want to be a club like Huddersfield, where the chairman personally gets involved in community projects and the players join in –seemingly willingly. I'm so fed up of having a new player sent out each week with a load platitudes for the press. I want my Ipswich back!

Not sure all this nonsense about Celina not tracking back. He's played defensive midfield for his country before when required (he's very versatile) and they raved about how well he played the role! See here:

I'm sure if he was asked to track back for us he would do so. But personally I'd rather let him run free and cause havoc down the other end and let the opposition worry about the threat he is causing them rather than worry so much about what he's doing to stifle them!

I am sure that Celina is no doubt a cocky little s*** but Mick showing outright signs of arrogance and stubbornness does nothing to endear me to him and I have been a supporter in the main !!!!

Swn98 having worked for many years in the service industry I've been sworn at many times by customers who want to complain. I was always told not to rise to it the one time I did I was sacked for foul and abusive language instantly. I don't hear anyone chanting for McCarthy always support for the team. Deep down you know he's bad for the club it's not disloyal to the club to say it!!! #mccarthyout

....... bohslegend is alive ... !!! - and still capable of spurting totally false statements. Go back to sleep, and do us all a favour - I guess you had to come out and give your forever happy and condoning brigade your support.

After all, you know who you are - and you're all tarred with the same brush - if ANY of you were real ITFC Supporters you wouldn't be telling anyone who disagrees with you to go elsewhere, but agree with most that things have to change before the Club loses what degree of credibility we may just still have.

Why are some comparing the fans behaviour to McCarthy's? Many pay thousands following THEIR CLUB around the country and have been served total rubbish football...ingredients provided by McCarthy! He's more than overstayed his welcome and frustrations are now evident on the terraces. For heavens sake he's in a position of power and such vileness towards the paying fan is unequivocally unacceptable . He's paid top dollar to rise above these kind of circumstances and as on the pitch, again he's failed miserably at PR! Surely IF Evans has any kind of fondness towards Sir Bobby's club he'd get shot of this ignorant and aloof fellow Monday 9.00am sharp! Better still McCarthy do the decent thing and go....for your own sake, and for all concerned!

...I will add, personally, I will forever be grateful to McCarthy for stemming the club's slide and thereafter taking his ragtag team into the playoffs. Many IF's and BUT's followed that summer, but looking back doesn't achieve nowt, but it should provide learning and experience , sadly something Evans I don't adjudged to have taken on board!

Looking at what he said in he cold light of day a real man would apologise for his foulmouthed tirade.
I doubt this will happen in the case of McCarthy.

Said before and I'll say again. If you don't like what's happening at present vote with your feet. Boycott the next two home games. I bet something will change then

For those defending this morons foul mouthed interview, he is paid handsomely to rise above whatever is aimed in his direction and act in a professional manner befitting the football club. There are ways of getting your point across without resorting to the language used and the man really is showing a complete lack of class now. how many premier league managers have you ever seen use or get away with this kind of language or behavior? Evans needs to grow some balls and rein MM in or get rid.

It doesn't make any difference any more what McCarthy says as his time was up ages ago.I simply don't listen to him...why waste my time as my cat knows more about tactics and strategy and would represent Ipswich with infinite more honour.
My wish is that our silent president make a decision now to relieve our tactically limited incumbent of his duties and put in place a more worthy candidate to save this season from becoming a waste land like the last three under McCarthy. He can't allow us to tread water and lose more supporters and the young generation who do not want to be associated with a club like ours.

Disrespectful comments from MM the man has no respect for the fans and never has done. It's the MM show as it always has been, all about McCarthy he absolutely loves himself. No intention of trying to play football he refuses to play Celina says it all. Man up Evans and get rid now

I haven't posted for quite a while. Time to break the silence briefly after MM's comments following our WIN at Burton,.
MM's an old style dour defender who'd have taken pride in snuffing out and flattening players like Celina. He doesn't like them because their talent shows when they break the rules - and sometimes make defenders look stupid by so doing.
Old Bignose seems to be very touchy, with anger boiling away underneath. There's his way, or the highway. Time for the HIghway I think Mick. Not because of the results or through lack of effort or the style of play you prefer. You just dont fit with our club and our footballing values.
After 50 plus years of supporting the Town I don't think I've ever disliked an Ipswich manager before. I've tried to be positive about him. But the dislike seems to be mutual so game on..I thought he'd had enough two seasons ago to be honest, but by all that's holy he has now..

Think Micks time was up at the end of last season, he'd lost the fans and to be honest the chances of winning them back was very slim, winning the first few games helped him but it has slipped back into the old routine and he is his own worst enemy with remarks like this. Will not resort to slagging the man off but Evans should have paid him off as the money lost in season ticket sales and falling attendances is probably far more than the cost of getting rid. That said Mr Evans needs to look at himself and decide where hes going with town put up or sell up maybe or finally get in a manager who will work with the academy and get the whole club playing to the same style from top to bottom, put more money in developing are own young players Cat 1 academies can raid others and get the best youngsters at minimal cost. Giving the best opportunities to young players to shine in the first team can be a draw to attract the best as Bobby Robson did. This has got to be the way forward for town !!!!

I really dont think we will ever go any further than the Championship with ME and MM at the helm but I do have to stick up for MM somewhat with regards the post match comments. Surely, as adults, You cant abuse someone from terraces for 90 mins then get all touchy about a few swear words aimed in your direction?. I am not a fan of the football he has the team playing but as for the banter, its tit for tat surely. You cant chuck sh*t at some one and not expect a bit back.
