Town Confirm Gleeson Signing
Friday, 19th Jan 2018 12:44

Town have confirmed the signing of Stephen Gleeson from Birmingham City on a free transfer. TWTD was first to reveal that Gleeson was set to join the Blues last night.

As reported earlier this morning, Gleeson’s Birmingham contract was up at the end of the season and is understood to have been settled, allowing him to move to the Blues on a permanent basis, signing a short-term deal until the summer.

Gleeson signing on a permanent rather than loan basis means Town could recruit another loanee before the transfer window shuts without having more than the five allowed in a matchday 18.

The 29-year-old, who will wear the number 25 shirt at Portman Road, is well-known to Blues manager Mick McCarthy having been at Wolves during his time as boss at Molineux.

“As soon as I knew Ipswich were interested in me, I couldn’t wait to get down here," he told iFollow Ipswich.

“I wanted to stay in the Championship and when the chance came up to come to such a fantastic club as this one, it’s no-brainer.

“I know the manager and Terry Connor well from our time together at Wolves. The manager gave me my first professional contract and gave me my debut there so I’m looking forward to working with them again.

“There’s a good group of players here. I’ve seen that and the club is only four points off the play-offs. It’s a brilliant opportunity for me and I’m looking to help the team push on in any way I can.

“I’m here until the end of the season and I’ve not thought about beyond that.

"If I can contribute here and the club are happy with what I’ve done then we can sit down and talk at the end of the six months but for now all I’m concerned about is enjoying my football again and helping the team progress.”

Dubliner Gleeson played youth football with Cherry Orchard before joining Wolves in 2006.

Loan spells at Stockport (three times), Hereford and the MK Dons followed before he joined the Buckinghamshire side on a permanent basis in July 2009 having made only one League Cup start and three league sub appearances for Wolves.

After five years with MK, the 5ft 9in tall midfielder moved on to Birmingham in 2014.

Having been a key man under former boss Gary Rowett, Gleeson has made only seven appearances for Birmingham (five in the Championship) this season with his most recent first-team game in early December.

He has won four Republic of Ireland full caps, scoring once, in addition to appearances at U17, U18, U19 and U21 levels.

....... another 'world class' loan no doubt in the eyes of some - doesn't do anything for me, not even able to get into another struggling Championship team doesn't fill me with much enthusiasm, and says it all.

In other words another cheap jack loan - typical ITFC of now.. However, I wish him well.

....... 'outs for the season' come all too easily, and regularly, at ITFC - ever wondered why ... ????

....... and MM will keep his job for as long as he wants it - because he asks for 'no money' to spend - yet again.

He's no mug in terms of 'self preservation' that's for sure - and he knows the people of Suffolk are easily taken in by him (far too many anyway).

All we need is for Big Mick to sign his contract extension and we'll be all set for top six. The final piece of the jig-saw. Prem here we come. COYB

If you read up on Small Heath Alliance the Blues are split but a lot of them quite rate this guy, and yet a lot of Blades are slagging off our other loan signing. We'll have to wait and see.

So Gleeson has been ignored by the series of mamagers who took Birmingham from the top to the bottom of the table, but was much used by the one who got them up there in the first place. I'd have thought that comes as a recommendation?

In all honesty I do not expect anything else. and we should not expect anything less
We cannot afford to sign any player on a contract when the manager (hopefully) will not be here next season. The new man does not need players he does not want on long term contracts that eat into his limited budget.
We need a CB and CCV will hopefully cover that, however what that will mean is that our very own Kenlock will lose out to a loanee (through no fault of his own imo) as Knudsen win be straight back to LB, despite Kenlock again shining in his recent appearances.
As for Gleeson, I believe he may be a good signing but again where is he going to play as no matter what form Skuse is in he will always play, and Connelly will also deservedly play.
Presumably he is not a winger so where will he play ???
Maybe he is just cover, although why come here if you are not going to play ???
I personally would like to see a midfielder with a bit more presence, as many of our options are a bit lightweight.

Hopefully this is one of a few short term signing and our scouts (if we have any) are currently working hard in the background

Blueboy1981 you've also stated that Garner was uninspiring. Garner has proved to be a good striker even though I didn't need proving he was. Gleeson similarly has impressed me everytime I've seen him play and that's not just against us.

Just accept both players then vent your frustration in May if they're no good.
In my eyes, good short term cover while we get over our hideous injury list.

Now going to annoy 50% on here, not bothered in Smith going, thought he'd gone down hill of late. Good servant granted, but needs a little more than that to command a starting place. Sorry.

Uninspiring signing. But that said it's a short term deal so if he does well - great. If he doesn't - no harm done. Personally feel we need better if serious about a promotion challenge. Time will tell though.

...... at least there are some gleaming reminders of 'what we were once capable of winning' in the background of the pic' - now they were the days ..... !! - that some of us unhappy souls can well and truly remember.

Even if it were The Hospital Cup.....!!

And players nearing the end of their contract usually find that bit extra.

I am prepared to wait and see what these two lads are like before passing judgement.

Most of us are positive when a new player comes in and hope they do well, whatever the cost,or not;but looking at the overall picture I cannot understand why Evans is not prepared to shell out any cash, bearing in mind we are only 4 points off the play offs.Surely he would want to see his team promoted, makes you wonder !?

BTW looks like he played regularly under Gary Rowett, which is a good sign;as I think that he is a much better manager than the clown they have now.

We moan about Marcus Evans;but what were the owners of Brum City thinking when they got rid of Rowett ?

Poultman added 19:05 - Jan 19
Let's give the guy a chance could be win all round.
Gary Rowett is highly rated and he was a fixture in his team
Just because they are a bit of a shambles now doesn't make
Him a bad player!!! He's not responsible as he's not playing

Rensham - is that a sarcastic post?

blueboy1981 added 19:33 - Jan 19
...... Seasider - simple answer, MM never asks for any. Preserves his existence at Portman Road and prevents Evans from expecting too much from him.
Only thing that will change that is if MM decides to leave on his own accord, or the crowd level drops to an Evans unacceptable level, at which point he will go whatever.
Who knows what that level would be ... ? - only Evans knows.
