Jones: Downes Outstanding on Luton Debut
Sunday, 4th Feb 2018 10:28

Luton manager Nathan Jones was full of praise for on-loan Blues midfielder Flynn Downes following an “outstanding” debut as the League Two leaders beat Exeter City 1-0 at Kenilworth Road on Saturday.

“He was outstanding,” Jones told Luton Today. “It’s as if he lives here in terms of the way he went about the pitch, the confidence he played with, the security and everything he had.

“But we kind of knew what we were getting, we just hoped he transforms that form that he’s had for Ipswich in here and he was absolutely outstanding, he really was.

“He will be minimum Championship player and we’re just so happy that Mick [McCarthy] and Ipswich had decided to entrust us with him here.

”His development will continue here and we’ll hand him back as a Championship player.”

The 19-year-old joined the Hatters on loan for the rest of the season on deadline day.

Elsewhere, Pat Webber played the full 90 minutes and Conor McKendry came on as an 68th minute sub as their loan side Braintree Town drew 0-0 away at Havant & Waterlooville in the Vanarama National League South. The duo joined the Iron on an initial month’s loan on Friday.

In League One, Josh Emmanuel played the full 90 minutes as Rotherham beat AFC Wimbledon 2-0.

Winger Danny Rowe also played the full game for his loan club Lincoln as the Imps drew 2-2 with Swindon in League Two at Sincil Bank.

Defender Luke Woolfenden played the full 90 minutes for Bromley as they drew 1-1 at Workington in the FA Trophy.

Should be starting at ITFC in place of Gleeson. We're effectively in pre-season for next year now.
We are in the business of success through our youth and signing underappreciated potential. We have never and will never achieve via aging journeymen. Especially not loanees. I can't believe Evans still hasn't learnt this post-Keane and Jewell.

Why send our best midfielder out on loan. Oh silly me, I forgot about our premiership quality no 8.

So does that means if we loan him out 4 times he could be Harry Kane??? Don't think Messi was loaned out once but then that's just a ridiculous statement to contradict a ridiculous statement

I appreciate that many support sending Downes to Luton but what will they say when Prem club buys him for a couple of £M in the summer. I know every player has a price but we could lose him without ever seeing him develop.
Trouble is that if we don't make him part of our future he may be more easily enticed away. Anyway I'd sooner watch him than a loanee who'll be off in a few months.
