Ex-England Boss McClaren Linked With Town
Sunday, 25th Mar 2018 10:16

Former England boss Steve McClaren is claimed to be top of Town owner Marcus Evans’s list of potential successors to Mick McCarthy.

The current Blues boss is expected to leave at the end of the season with his contract up in the summer and, according to a report in The Sun on Sunday, Evans hopes to tempt McClaren, 56, to Portman Road.

The former Middlesbrough, FC Twente, Wolfsburg, Derby, Nottingham Forest and Newcastle manager is without a job at present having ended a short spell as a coaching consultant with Maccabi Tel Aviv at the end of last year.

McClaren’s name is unlikely to be the last speculatively linked with Town in the weeks to come with McCarthy’s summer departure now appearing inevitable.

As previously reported, Evans is believed to be keen on former skipper and coach Tony Mowbray, who he has twice come close to appointing Blues boss in the past, however, the 54-year-old is currently riding high in League One with Blackburn Rovers and might prove difficult to prise away from Ewood Park.

Ex-Manchester United defender Jaap Stam, 45, who was sacked by Reading earlier in the week, is also understood to be among those in Evans’s thoughts as he looks to appoint McCarthy’s replacement.

If McClaren, Stam and the equally awful (as a manager) Mowbray are the only 3 options, then I'd rather the club was liquidated and shut down.

Now I seem to remember lots on here saying give McCarthy a chance he's had 5 1/2 now surely we can give the next manger 2 years at least to get things right. Most didn't want Joe Royle but he made us eat humble pie. We are a club that doesn't turn on it's manager after a few games as is prove by the time McCarthy has had and it's only this season that the majority want him gone and there are still those that want him to stay!

The phrase, better the devil you know, comes to mind. We need to be careful what we wish for.

Think that shefki would be a good choice,a no nonsense guy with ITFC's values and reputation paramount,he would understand what we're about! and give the supporters a team we want to get behind.

Or, a slightly left-field choice, how about Aidy Boothroyd who is managing England under-21s?

D&A? Brilliant. Disaster & Accident (waiting to happen).

I don't think he is the answer. I can't actua see ME appointing him because he will want money and that's the last thing ME is prepared to do.
It's a sad state of affairs for this once great club. ME doesn't care about ITFC, he's just interested in his own bank balance.

Being very careful what I wish for, I would prefer not to have an established serial failure like Pardew, Hoofroyd, or McLaren. They are not safe pairs of hands by any means. I'd rather take a chance on any up and coming manager in a lower league who would be excited by the chance to manage a bigger club. There are plenty of 'old hands' around Portman Road with managerial experience who could assist. I'd like a fresh face. Yes, it might fail, but so did the aforementioned, and very expensively in each case.

I for one would like change but only for the better!

I would rather Mcarthy stay than McLaren to come in !

Let's jope if Mick does go that Evans seriously gets his next appointment correct

To be honest I would rather see klug as a director of football and a younger manager in

Wasn't one of my ‘worst nightmare' MM replacement scenarios.

How remiss of me - right up there with Megson/Holloway/Pearson etc. as a terrible idea.

Probably just lazy paper speculation. Let's hope so.

Please Evans read our comment. We don't want a has been, we want a hungry manager from the lower divisions. How many times have we been out played at home by lower clubs, Lincoln comes to mind. There are good managers and players in the lower leagues just waiting for a chance.

Not McClarin hopefully. Mowbray possibly, but like most want an up and coming manager with positive experience. The Championship is too high a level for a learner.

whatever happened to the Lincoln manager that beat us....

Doubt he would come but Paul Cook at Wigan would be my choice. Did well at Chesterfield, very well at Pompey & even better at Wigan. Plays positive football which is a must for us given the current despondency surrounding the club.
The sobering fact is maybe managing Wigan might be a more attractive option? It is certainly debatable which in itself is a sad reflection of where we stand.

McClaren managerial r3cird ( Boro part), is frankly, abysmal. His win rate over his last three Clubs , where he stayed for only a year In each post, was just 23%.

McCarthy by contrast has had to date 78 wins at Town , 33% win rate. His record was only bettered At his Wolves promotion winning side.

Although not to many fans liking, when you consider our financial position, lowest crowds in 20 years and lack of ambition at the club, I find even being linked with a former England manager particularly flattering on our part.....
