Warburton Latest Boss Linked
Sunday, 1st Apr 2018 11:24

Former Brentford, Rangers and Nottingham Forest boss Mark Warburton is the latest manager to be linked with the Town job which will become vacant when Mick McCarthy moves on in the summer.

According to The Sun on Sunday Warburton is competing with ex-England boss Steve McClaren - who the same paper claimed was Town’s top choice for the job last week - to succeed McCarthy at Portman Road.

"Warburton, 55, who has been out of work since leaving the City Ground on New Year’s Eve, is said to be interested in the job.

Meanwhile, Luton boss Nathan Jones was unaware of links with Town when quizzed about his potential interest in a move to the Blues.

“It’s not the first time I’ve been linked, but I actually haven’t seen that, it’s the first I’ve heard about it,” the 44-year-old Welshman told Dunstable Today.

“I’ve got a job to do here and let’s just concentrate on getting promoted [from League Two] as that's the most important thing.”

Lincoln’s Danny Cowley - who played down the speculation linking him with Town on Thursday - remains the bookies’ favourite for the job at 6-4 with SkyBet, although would be a surprise appointment given his lack of Football League experience.

Ex-Blues skipper and coach Tony Mowbray, understood to be top of owner Marcus Evans’s list of potential appointments but currently flying high in League One with Blackburn, is second favourite at 11-4.

Wigan boss Paul Cook, 51, who we also understand is a manager admired by the Town owner, has climbed to third-favourite at 7-2. McClaren, 10-1, Warburton, 16-1, and Jones, 22-1, are further down the betting at the time of writing.

Meanwhile, the Blues and Middlesbrough are keen on a summer move for veteran Aston Villa right-back Alan Hutton, according to the Sunday People.

Scotland international Hutton, 33, will be out of contract at the end of the season.

Given the Town management situation, any player speculation can currently be taken with a pinch of salt.

People keep saying the Crowley bros play direct and apart from the two games they played us off the park I haven't watched them that much. However, is playing direct really a problem, as I see our main problem at the moment is a twonk of a manager that thinks playing 5 in defence and 3 holding midfielders is going to win games.

If I am to put my 5 pence worth I would like any from the Crowley, the Luton guy or the Dutch fella.. if I'm honest any of those and I am looking forward to next seasons first home game and a cracking atmosphere.

Evans has obviously got his eye on someone currently employed elsewhere otherwise one of these out of work bosses would be here now.

Hoping it's Mowbray & Venus. 🤞🏻🤞🏻

When we first got linked with the Dutch manager last year I have to say I was pretty keen (albeit I recognised it would be a stab in the dark but I just had a feeling he might be just what we wanted) as apparently his team liked to play attacking football. However, I just looked them up online and now they are in the top flight in Holland they are one of the lowest scoring teams and they are averaging about 1 goal a game and I think they drew their last game at home nil nil! I'm not saying this should automatically put him out of the running as he might be working miracles on a minuscule budget to even have them in the top league, however, I was hoping to see they were a team that liked to score a few more goals at least. I'm really not sure who I'd prefer to take the job out of the candidates being linked at the moment. Some I don't know enough about to comment but there are a few I'm more familiar with that I'm really not keen on at all. Let's hope Marcus finally gets this one right but I have to say I'm not sure he will given his track record of previous appointments.

You have to be careful what you wish for.
Given the integrity and history of the club, Mr Hoddle should be the last person anyone would want as manager. His views on disabled and lack of a sincere apology was disgraceful and how he is still employed as a pundit with those views and his state the bleeding obvious is beyond me. As for that single he released - he should of got time for that.
Usual past players being mentioned by some who cannot move on.
Personally i would go for the rochdale manager.

Looking at the players we have, with no injuries and worst case scenario no additions I would start 2018/19
Bialkowski, Emanuel, Kenlock, Chambers, Webster, Carter-Vickers, Huws, Dozzell, Garner, Waghorn and Carayol

Crowe, Woolfenden, Patterson, Morris, Webber, Folami and Adyemi

I'm with MickZZZzzzzTactics on this one.

Liking what I read about Steijn. He's quoted as being up for an overseas challenge in UK, and the ITFC-Dutch connection would be grear for those of us old enough to remember. How about Thijssen or Muhren as assistants?

I think Mogga is probably ready now but my first choice is still Nigel Clough----he would sort things out.

Perhaps that is why we are having to wait-----nonetheless this has all been handled very badly, as usual.

Paul Cook and Tony Mowbray would both be decent appointments, but both Blackburn and Wigan are likely to be in the Championship nex6gt season and both will come up with momentum. Both will be on contracts that need to be compensated for and arguably are clubs that are as big as Ipswich. So unless the stability of working for ME and given time to develop without the threat of being sacked after a few bad games has an added attraction then I think it will be difficult prising either of these two away.

If ME is prepared to pay compensation (which may be doubtful) then I would show some real ambition and go and try and prise Graham Potter away from Ostersund, for me he is the best choice by a considerable way and a perfect fit for us.

If we consider the lower leagues then Nathan Jones is my choice over Danny Cowley. Nathan has played the game professionally (not that always matter considering Mourinho and Warburton) and has had spells playing in Spain. He was also assistant manager to Oscar Garcia at Brighton.

Maurice Steijn is an interesting choice and has a release clause so I would most definitely consider but I hesitate as to whether the Dutch approach may be a risk. Having said that Jaap Stam took Reading to 3rd and the play off final in his first season with a 60% win ratio, that's impressive and he had two former Ajax staff with him. What happened to Reading this season God only knows, but most managers have had failures at some point on their cv so I wouldn't rule out Jaap either.

Now onto the "dreaming option" Frank Lampard, this could be risky but paired with an experienced assistant or director of football e.g. Burley or Curbishley (who I understand now lives at Woodbridge) may just work.

My order of preference;

1. Graham Potter
2. Tony Mowbray
3. Nathan Jones
4. Paul Cook
5. Maurice Steijn
6. Jaap Stam
7. Frank Lampard with experienced assistant or DOF

I am uncertain about Mark Warburton or Danny Cowley, I also see Simon Graysons name on the list which whilst may seem unappealing but he does play a better brand of football than MM and I believe would be a relatively safe pair of hands, look what Sean Dyche is doing with Burnley, I think Simon is underrated and nobody can hold his failure at Sunderland against him.

would be interested in thoughts on Alan Pardew anyone? Could perhaps do with managing a Championship club for the next role after recent disappointments.
