Warburton Latest Boss Linked
Sunday, 1st Apr 2018 11:24

Former Brentford, Rangers and Nottingham Forest boss Mark Warburton is the latest manager to be linked with the Town job which will become vacant when Mick McCarthy moves on in the summer.

According to The Sun on Sunday Warburton is competing with ex-England boss Steve McClaren - who the same paper claimed was Town’s top choice for the job last week - to succeed McCarthy at Portman Road.

"Warburton, 55, who has been out of work since leaving the City Ground on New Year’s Eve, is said to be interested in the job.

Meanwhile, Luton boss Nathan Jones was unaware of links with Town when quizzed about his potential interest in a move to the Blues.

“It’s not the first time I’ve been linked, but I actually haven’t seen that, it’s the first I’ve heard about it,” the 44-year-old Welshman told Dunstable Today.

“I’ve got a job to do here and let’s just concentrate on getting promoted [from League Two] as that's the most important thing.”

Lincoln’s Danny Cowley - who played down the speculation linking him with Town on Thursday - remains the bookies’ favourite for the job at 6-4 with SkyBet, although would be a surprise appointment given his lack of Football League experience.

Ex-Blues skipper and coach Tony Mowbray, understood to be top of owner Marcus Evans’s list of potential appointments but currently flying high in League One with Blackburn, is second favourite at 11-4.

Wigan boss Paul Cook, 51, who we also understand is a manager admired by the Town owner, has climbed to third-favourite at 7-2. McClaren, 10-1, Warburton, 16-1, and Jones, 22-1, are further down the betting at the time of writing.

Meanwhile, the Blues and Middlesbrough are keen on a summer move for veteran Aston Villa right-back Alan Hutton, according to the Sunday People.

Scotland international Hutton, 33, will be out of contract at the end of the season.

Given the Town management situation, any player speculation can currently be taken with a pinch of salt.

At some level, who is picked is not relevant unless they are given adequate funding to replenish the squad. I'd either prefer someone with Club ties or a young manager with a track record of success in the lower leagues along with a promise from Evans that they will be strongly backed with cash.

I think it is time to appoint a foreigner. There are plenty of coaches abroad who could transform our style of play!

All I am going to say is be careful what you wish for. Best of sticking with McCarthy. Has done a magnificent job since his been here.

I heard that the Cowley Bros. have got a £900.000 bounty on there heads, so cannot see Marcus Evans paying out that much money for new management ????

I have it on good authority that Klug isn't interested in management, not even as a caretaker. His knowledge of the game is second to none but from what I understand he's happy with his current role.

It might be a good idea if Marcus Evans got some info from Garner and Waghorn to find out a bit more about Warburton as they have played for him ???? Just a thought.

HOT THAN HOT "BETTING" NEWS!!! :-) :-)

While I personally find this to be perhaps the most crucial new manger appointment EVER in the clubs history, and therefore like most of you also find myself being quite "selective" about who is the right guy and who isn't (Warburton who is not only 55 -- not too archaic an age for SOME mangers but I do prefer someone a bit younger -- but also has a very muddled kind of CV although he did made Brentford really entertaining to watch 'Going Forward' put also at the same token strangely RECURRENTLY vulnerable & undisciplined defensively!!!, falls's somewhere in the lower end of the middle imho) I simply opt not to pay much attention to the dubious 'Rumor Mill'.

However l do like to do visit this here page from time to time 'THE SACK RACE', not merely because I like to bet, occasionally, but some of the none-betting relating managerial stuff on this site is actually quite informative. Anyway the supposedly "HOT NEWS" is that when I visited just minutes ago, renowned bookie 'BETVICTOR' now has Cowley at 1/1 ???!!!! .... Very interesting, as this type of odds almost HAVE TO be based on some more or less reliable if not outright definitive "insider info" if you ask me!.

http://www.thesackrace.com/teams/ipswich-town

Fingers crossed that it is then.... cause I think Cowley, while unproven at this level, is just what the "Good doctor ordered" for this here very rot-infested patient called ITFC!

Perhaps I am reading too much into this;but surely if Marcus wanted either McLaren or the above,he would have been able to put them in straight away.Instead we have this ridiculous situation of McCarthy still holding the reins of the stationary Suffolk Punch.

I am therefor clinging to the hope that the delay is because Marcus has to wait for somebody currently in post;like Mogga to gain automatic promotion like the Luton & Wigan Managers,or get through the play-offs like the Cowleys etc.

Hopefully it is the Dutch fella (not the brolly wielding one)who just needs to complete the first season of VV in the Eredivisie !

We live in hope and expectation.

I'm bored with all the newspaper speculation already.

Problem is that's it's highly likely that the appointment when it comes will be as underwhelming as the hype.

Wake me when there's something to celebrate or take to my keyboard with righteousness indignation about.

Rule of thumb: if they are in work or under contract, forget it. The chances of ME coughing up are zero.

Warbarton or Cook for me - both have decent 'points per game' at previous clubs, play better football than MM and have knowledge of Scottish/lower leagues where talent comes at a lesser price.

Northstandveteran added 15:48 - Apr 1
Dutch for me but am still feeling the sense of total relief that McCarthy's reign is nearly at its end.

Still so elated that any of the above would do me!!!

Surely we'll get 4th time lucky?

Not saying you did a bad job with your funds Mick but unfortunately your style of football would have killed this club had you been here just one more season

I can't believe the amount of people who'd be happy with Warburton. He was dreadful at Rangers and Forest. He only did ok at Brentford when he inherited a good squad in League One. I'd like to see Paul Cook but can't see him coming.

Surprised we're not being mentioned with Terry Butcher too???

Get in Matt Holland and Taricco!!!

I know Taricco is Assistant Manager at Bordeaux but enough experience to manage. And Holland Assistant manager. Or Butcher Assistant Manager. An older wiser head to help.

I work with a Rangers fan & he didn't rate Warburton at all, he said he was clueless when it came to his team defence which he found surprising as he had David Weir as his number 2! I personally would like to see Mowbary & Venus but either way whoever gets the job will they have to do it on a shoestring budjet?

Aye being cautious & "selective" about who we as fans want is obviously only a good thing, BUT as have been stated & agreed upon by just about everybody since Thursday: This goes for ME's approach too!!! Alas don't per say rush this appointment in any way dear Scrooge -- and I said above probably the most crucial EVER in the clubs history -- but for an abundance of reasons even a 'Blind Man' can see "Get rid of 'Has-Been'Muck" ... NOW!!!!!!!!! ....and subsequently just let about any reasonable & WILLING caretaker really take over through to the end of the season.

As for the permanent managerial set, here is my personal top 5 btw:

1. Cook (No experience at this level. But has clearly advocated some very pleasing to eye football, with both Portsmouth & Wigan in recent years ... but I think he most likely will wind up at WBA, who have many of the same dire "entertainment starved" needs as us ....and oh even though likely relegated they are much more likely to part with many more Pesos (infamous 'Parachute Payment' included) to spend than our Scrooge!

2. Steijn (Not listed as having any odds strangely....but a very good fit here IMHO, due to good reputation all-around + tactical both sound & daring, and basically simply advocates that very Dutch & also modern-like style that includes "Let them worry about us!" and not the dreaded other way around!

3) Cowley (Do not flatly agree with the views by SOME here that he is practically a very McCathyesque football fella ...and certainly not at heart either!!!! Last year he did NATIONAL recognized wonders, including on the entertainment front as well imho, with a freakin' Vanaramara side!!! ... and how many Pesos to they generally have to shop for and how long can they generally hang on to their more gifted players ehhhh??? Thus last year his then non-league side of his by & large both played and passed us i.e. Muck's 'Proper Blokish XI' of the Championship off the field ...TWICE!!! Not to mention what they additionally managed to do with & against their other giant-killings in the cup.

Haven't seen any 90 minutes spectacles with them this year, just weekly highlights, but if Lincoln has been favoring the long ball much more than the passing game this season ....well hmmm 'just a thought' but it MIGHT very well has to do with them not only being a newly promoted Vanarama side, which main objective probably was not to get relegated anytime soon again, but also with their current & affordable player material likely not being exactly STUFFED with a plethora of technically gifted or even let alone "pass-capable" players (for reference of such see our own 2 super "championship stalwarts" Chambo & SkuZzzey for instance lol)

4) Bilic (Shrewd & likable person with imho a very good & also modern 'football' mindset .... and undeniably some pretty good things (not always results-wise though!) including on the transfer front he accomplished in his early years at West Ham)

5) Mowbray (For obvious APPEALING team related reasons ....including a feeling of a bit of that good-times nostalgia too lol. However not really sure or 100% comfortable with how this old defensive rock -- and thus sort of like Muck visibly predominantly defensive minded too -- is willing to dare and entertain in the 2nd highest tier of English football , especially if put on a minuscule budget by Scrooge.)

as Cornard said, cant see Evans paying in compensation, he is obviously not willing to pay MM off.

bring in klug till the end of the season he knows his football
2

grumpyoldman added 17:34 - Apr 1
Surely if he paid off MM and gave the job to an insider until the end of the season it would cost no more as the caretaker wages would be paid anyway. The decision to keep MM until the end of the season does seem even stranger, unless (conspiracy theory here), what if, when the extra season tickets sales are confirmed ME announces that MM is the new manager.

I've just read a post from Swn98 that didn't upset me! The times they are a changing.

Can't disagree with Seasider and Northstandveteran, as usual.

I'm just so happy that things will be different next season.

Proper manager, plays game the right way

Plenty of good ideas but my theories:

McClaren would be in already also would be expensive and demand £Ms to spend
Warburton same as above and did badly at Forest
Cook will be coming up anyway
Mowbray ditto
Crowley too big a jump
Glen don't think he'd be interested
Lampard untried but could be good although same as Glen

However I think it'll be a surprise so none of the above

How about Exeter City's Paul Tisdale. He's taken them from the National League (Conference) to consistently strong League 2 promotion contenders. He virtually runs the whole club - Exeter are owned by their Supporters Trust - and on a shoestring budget (would be useful given Evans' lack of footballing nous and sealed wallet). They play very attractive football and apparently he has a get out clause.

oldelsworthyfan added 19:29 - Apr 1
Either Mowbray, Steijn or Cook would be capable of getting us into the Premiership - which MM obviously was not - hence it wasn't worth ME giving him cash to spend because there was no hope of him getting us there.
Look how Garner, Waghorn and Sears have each dis-improved under MM's guidance and goals have completely dried up, whilst Marriott, Pitman and Moore (55 goals between them - although in a lower division) have absolutely thrived after their release from MM's shackles..
We need a Manager who provides us with a modern brand of exciting football, and not some 'has-been' like some of the names that have mentioned.
Come on ME, please get it right this time!
