Wigan Linked With Windass
Wednesday, 8th Aug 2018 23:56

Wigan have emerged as contenders for Rangers attacker Josh Windass, who is also the subject of an approach from the Blues.

The Latics previously made an unsuccessful bid for Windass, 24, the son of former Hull City star Dean, in December.

Town were first reported to be ready to make a £2 million move for Windass yesterday with further reports in Scotland this morning claiming the Gers were weighing-up a Blues offer of around £1.2 million plus add-ons, with later suggestions that the clubs were moving closer to agreeing a deal.

Speaking earlier today ahead of Thursday evening’s Europa League tie against Slovenian side Maribor, manager Steven Gerrard admitted that his club might be forced to sell the likes of Windass and James Tavernier, the Ibrox club having turned down a West Brom bid for the full-back.

“We’re at a club where every player does have a price, so that might affect us in the next 24 hours,” he conceded.

“But we’ll have to deal with it and face that if and when it happens. At the moment I’m looking at my phone and hoping [Rangers director of football] Mark Allen doesn’t phone.

“We just need to focus on the game and prepare the team the best we can for another difficult test.

“But I can’t sit here and say we won’t be affected in the next 24 hours. We might be. I’ve heard nothing in terms of bids, but that may change in the coming hours. If it does, we’ll have to wait and see.”

While there is certainly Blues interest in Windass it remains to be seen whether they would look to progress matters unless another attacking player - presumably long-time Bolton Wanderers target Joe Garner - were to move on with rapidly diminishing funds still required for another central defender.

Elsewhere, Bristol City left-back Joe Bryan’s move to Aston Villa looks to have been hijacked by Fulham, meaning the Midlanders will be looking for another left-sided full-back on deadline day.

Town’s Jonas Knudsen had been linked with Villa, while Middlesbrough - who were also chasing Bryan - and Stoke are also believed to be interested.

Earlier this afternoon, the Blues were linked with a loan move for Rangers left-back Declan John along with Swansea, presumably a potential replacement for the Danish international should he move on.

We should be more of an attractive proposition than Wigan, surely?

Hopefully Waggy can put in a good word about us to sway his decision

If Bolton are no longer interested in Garner, as they appear to be in for Lafferty, it might be less of a priority for Hurst to bring in Windass. Very different types of forward players though, so I hope we push on with it & let Garner off on loan next week if someone comes in for him.
The front 3 of Edwards, Harrison & Jackson will give defences a lot of problems, with directness, strength, pace & skill, but they're not going to play 50 odd games each this season; we need quality in depth if we are going to be a front foot, pressing side.

Come on get it done regardless if we sell Garner. Windass can play effectively on the wing from the few games I've seen of him.

Yes, would be nice to push the financial boat out a bit and get Windass as well as Tilt in the next 24 hours regardless of what happens with Garner ....

For me ..... Morris looked good so would like us to sign central defender first and keep Knudsen.
Then push on for Windass

At least ME has backed Hurst and got the players he wanted but it will take time for the team to gel.......expect a mid table really this season and would hope we will push on next season

Would love to see us sign this guy, he looks very good and an eye for goal like his dad. I think we need to do all we can. Personally I would rather see garner stay, he offers something no other striker does up front. Would rather see sears go to be honest

I'd keep Sears over Garner just because his pace is important to our new style of play.

Will be slightly disappointed if we don't get Windass and a half decent CB now. I'm not greedy

Would be great to get both Windass & Tilt today - probably to much to ask for though !!

@Well In, I was gutted when I heard that Connelly was off to Wigan on loan, I would of loved us to sign him on a permanent, good player who offered us options!

I think this season we might surprise a few with the position we finish in. I keep reading about a low or mid table finish but these guys are pro's & I don't think it'll take too long to gel. These new boys have excitement and a point to prove at this level, with plenty of talent. That alone will take us higher than some of you are thinking. Exciting times!

Strong rumour West Brom are in talks to buy a Rangers player - not sure which one but they need options in an attacking sense so wouldn't be surprised.

afcfee - Garner can score goals and is good in the air, Sears is neither and Garner is different from the players we have just signed. Why off load him rather than Sears?

Just read this online a little after 3pm today:

Told that Josh Windass is currently en route to Wigan to hold talks with the championship side. Understand Rangers have accepted a bid of 2.5m + add-ons. Wigan appear to have have stolen a march on Ipswich.

Don't know what sources the guy has, but if he's right then sounds like we could well be missing out on Windass. Hopefully he's wrong as would like to see him here.

I should add there are other tweets from just an hour before that one saying Windass is en-route to Ipswich, I guess we'll no more soon...
Was feeling this morning like we might get this one done but not feeling so confident now.
