Woolfenden's Swindon Loan Confirmed Friday, 31st Aug 2018 18:34 Town have confirmed that defender Luke Woolfenden has joined Swindon on a season-long loan, as TWTD revealed earlier this evening.
The 19-year-old says manager Phil Brown was a big reason for him making the switch to the Robins.
“When Phil Brown first rang me I said, 'I know who he is, he’s worked in the Premier League', so that was a huge draw for me,” he told the Swindon official site.
“I was comfortable at that level, in the National League, so I think I’m more than ready to make the step up to League Two.”
Brown added: "I’ve been chasing him for six weeks now. He was recommended to me by Mick McCarthy.
"He said in a heartbeat that we should take the lad, Luke. That’s a great recommendation.
“As well as that, Ben Chorley played alongside him last season at Bromley and swears by his character. He can play centre-half and other positions which is exactly what we’ve wanted.
“I’m absolutely delighted to get hold of a top player but it shows just what a crazy transfer window this has been that I’ve been chasing him for six weeks and only got him five minutes before the deadline.”
As with the Emmanuel and Morris loan moves, Town are able to cut the spell short in January.
In addition to those three and Tristan Nydam, who joined St Johnstone earlier in the week, Town have three further youngsters out on loan at Vanarama National League clubs, Aaron Drinan at Sutton United, Pat Webber at Braintree and Chris Smith at Aldershot.
“We have got some good young players here who I rate highly but at the moment they are not getting the games they need,” manager Paul Hurst told the club site.
“I have to look at what is best for the development of their careers and they are far better off playing first-team games on loan than they are sitting on the bench or in the stands here or playing for the U23s.
“They need to be playing games with three points at stake week in, week out and they have the opportunity to do that on loan and keep developing. Then we will look at it again in January.”

F me you are some depressing fans, if he had played and messed up u would be saying hey are we playing kids, some of you can't be pleased, all the young players out playing first team football week in week out can only help them, good chance klugg helped section these moves, we ain't in a position to be playing 6 /7 youth team players each weak,we are going to be in a scarp this season and the youth team won't keep us up! nedum onuha would be a good free at the back, I do worry about the lack of cb's but I'd be more worried if it was left to 19 year olds to keep us up

It's no good moaning about Hurst's decisions remember our last manager "from up North" was bloody stubborn now't changes.

These moves are down to the position we find ourselves in I suspect rather than not rating them. Had we been top six at this point instead of bottom then maybe they would have stayed and played. PH is just getting some experience in as he knows that the young ones are not going to get us up the table any time soon. If they are not going to play regularly then a loan is the best thing for them. They can come back in January in any case. In Hurst we Trust. #IHWT #COYB

While I wonder whether we might have been better with one or two fewer new bodies in, while at the same time blooding some of our own youngsters, I understand PH has a strategy here. Note that he does say, “We have got some good young players here who I rate highly...." This doesn't suggest that he thinks they won't make it, just that they need to be playing games. And we can call some of them back if needs be. So for now, I'm persuaded. I still hope that in the not-too-distant future we will be seeing four or five of our own as team regulars, however.

At last guthrum. Some1 with a brain. Of course Klug has had a say in this. Why is it that some of our so called fans think our younger players shouldnt be sent out on loan? Didnt donDownes any harm last season. Got him used to playing league football on a regular basis. And theres the point. None of these 3 would have been regulars in our side right now. So what is better for them? To be playing u23s football or regular league football? And should we require any of them back in January, they can be recalled and should come back better players for that experience. I take the point that a few of the players weve loaned out in the past have not returned but that was under McCarthy. For gods sake people. Just stop the whinging and negativity and get behind hurst and the team. If this stategy doesnt work, we'll find out in time. But i believe hes doing the right thing and yhese players will come back stronger and more prepared for our team thsn they would playing u23s football. Also btw, dont know why everyone was shocked by this anyway. Hurst had said a week ago that he may send luke out on loan but that would depend on whether we signed some1 1st.

David Beckham went out on loan to Preston about the same age, didn't do him no harm did it? All these lads will get valuable game time & if they are as good as people on here believe - and we all hope they are - then they will be ripping it up week in week out for their loan team and come back better more experienced players. I believe its the right move - time will tell. As for Dozzell being blanked as one poster said on here - PH has already said they are working on a special program for him so his knee injury doesnt re-ocurr. That obviously includes games at U23. We dont know the exactly details of that plan.

Are you all bonkers mad?! Luke is a fantastic prospect no doubt. Will he start over Toto and Luke Chambers? No I don't think so. Is it more beneficial for his development to be a regular in a team? Yes. Same goes for Emmanuel and Morris. I want to bring our own players through just as much as anyone but going out on loan go gain valuable minutes could be the making of these young lads so trust PH and CO's judgment on this. I'd much rather we have a loan signing as cover and have our boys go out and get games to progress than use ours as that cover.

Fans at Chelsea and Spurs are going crazy - seems like they've loaned out a couple of their promising youngsters to a Championship club.

Uefa81 silly comment.... Chelsea have a squad full of top players and had about 50 players out on loan last season... we have a team full of lower league lads and are bottom of the league.

Loans can be positive in helping a player develop, fully in agreement there. But we don't seem to have the best record in sending players out and then gaining as a club later from the experience. Take Emmanuel last season, he goes out on loan. He establishes himself as a first-team regular for Rotherham who end up winning the Play Offs again Paul Hurst's Shrewsbury. Hurst is obviously looking to promote lower league players into the Championship to see if they can earn their stripes. Josh clearly earned his stripes as he played for a team that actually won promotion into the Championship, that to me suggests he earned his chance. But he's barely featured under Hurst. There have been countless players that have gone out on loan and done well (Jack Marriott is a prime recent example that leaves a lump in my throat). Just can't understand why some of the players that have done well on their loans still get no (or at the most very limited) opportunities on their return. Remember George Burley made his debut against George Best, he was thrown in the deep end and look how he turned out! Imagine if Fergie had of loaned Beckham, Neville, Butt and Giggs out to various teams instead of letting them gel and develop together in the first team, that turned out alright didn't it! You could argue our raw recruits are nowhere near that level but we've had our own youngsters with pedigree which we've failed to fully capitalise from. For example, when we won the FA Youth Cup we didn't make nearly enough of that crop of young talent. Moreover, when a player has played a blinder in the U23s surely they could at least be put in the first team squad and if we had the luxury of say a 2 nil lead, then why not get them on for last ten minutes? Folami did ok when he got his chance last season (and remember his goal from behind the half-way line for the U23s!), I thought he'd scored but the goal got awarded to Waghorn. Then next game he went quiet but a young player needs to be given time, if you just drop them the first time they have a quiet game and they never get to see the light of day in the first team again it can destroy their confidence. I think Kenlock has been given a pretty rough wrap too, only by giving such a player run of games can they hope to become a first-team regular / fixture. Wolfenden looked very assured against West Ham I thought, but if he goes out and comes back and looks all the better for it then it will have been a win win. No argument there. But a lot of our loans seems to have turned out for a win to the other party but ultimately a lose for us! Hopefully Hurst will have a better record of rewarding players with opportunities that go out on loan and do well. Barry Cotter looked very good last season as well on his debut. What's happened to him? Mick to his credit threw him in and he did really well. Was excited what I saw from him that game. Yet now he's fallen back into the background. The point I'm making is we're investing a lot of money into the academy and youth set up, but we'll never see the full return on that investment (or the huge profits we might) if we don't give our best youth players a fair run of games to get properly settled and established. IF THEY ARE GOOD ENOUGH THEY ARE OLD ENOUGH!

And somehow forgot to mention Scholes above, as one of Fergie's many master strokes.

Midaatouch. Ur argument falls down as Beckham did go out on loan
midastouch added 13:16 - Sep 1
@ blues1, but that is my precise argument, other teams play the loan game a lot better than us, clearly Beckham seized his loan opportunity and then was ultimately rewarded with first team games and thus he became a regular fixture. We however rarely seem to reward our players that return on loan following a successful spell. I am all for loans, as long as we reward players that return after a successful spell with fair opportunities.

It's always been the Ipswich way to develop youth and ultimately let it flourish in the first team. I just feel we've lost our way a bit in that department. Some stats would suggest otherwise as we've played a lot of youth players, but how many of them have gone on to make a number of successive appearances and subsequently become first team regulars? Rather they seem to be used as utility players to cover a short-term suspension or an injury. Others are given just a couple of chances at the tail end of the season when league safety is assured. But I would rather see the brightest talent getting a run of games. It's worked brilliantly for Town in the past so why not again?

Hurst has been making some very high risk decisions since his arrival at Town. He has now brought in a completely new team composed of players without Championship level experience. Only the remaining incumbent squad players have such experience and only 3 of those (Bart, Chambers, Skuse) still seem to be in his plans (For the time being). I think Hurst would counter the above by saying that he knows from his own experience what it takes to succeed at Championship level because (a) he has himself played extensively at this level and (b) he has as a manager developed a proven playing style that has success at lower league levels. Time will show if Hurst is right. But he will not have much time, because if by December Town are adrift at the bottom of the Table the pressure will be on and the inexperienced players from lower leagues may begin to suffer from the attritional effect on confidence of repetitive defeats and evaporating home crowd support. The wholesale rejection of existing Town academy talent for this year (Nydam, Wolfie, Emmanuel, Morris all loaned out) with the minor exceptions of Kenlock and Dozzell (neither of whom Hurst has accepted as potential starters), can either be interpreted as his genuine assessment that they are "not ready" (for whatever reasons) or/and that the players he has brought in are already better players and more likely to perform for him this season at the required level. Again, time will tell. Hurst in his interviews is maintaining an air of apparent quiet self-assurance. We must hope that this self-assurance is indeed the measure of the man and he is about to pull off an (in my opinion) unlikely feat. I wish him well. However, the decisive way he has acted in rejecting the town youngsters means that he has placed his own stamp on the team from day one. It is not clear to me what is his "Plan B" if his current way of setting up the team fails to bring results over the next 5-6 games. Where will he go from there ? Finally, noting his taking of Jon Walters on a season long loan is, I suggest, the first sign of his grabbing a last chance opportunity to bring in some pragmatism to the make-up of the squad. If Walters stays uninjured and fit, and Hurst plays him regularly in an attacking role, then this will force changes which may help the side create more in the final third of the pitch. If not, then I can only recall the Town friendly against West Ham when there were Nydam, Dozzell and Downdes all playing at the same time in midfield. For several patches of play these 3 tore West Ham apart. I think many Town fans were hoping these three would all be regulars this season .

@ Tony88, remember you pulled me up previously because I said I wouldn't be negative until September? Well may I suggest you have a look at the calendar please! And just to clarify, Paul Hurst is on his last weekend of his honeymoon as far as I'm concerned, if however we win tomorrow his honeymoon will be granted a long extension with plenty of credit restored in the bank and rightly so! If however we lose tomorrow (unless we get turned over unfairly) then the honeymoon is over as far as I'm concerned. It's a must win game. Paul Hurst can go from Zero to Hero or Hero to Zero tomorrow. Should the worse happen and you're still content being sat at the bottom of the league after getting turned over by Norwich then fill your boots but I have to say that will most likely be enough to tip me over the edge! I live in Norfolk and get more abuse than you could possibly imagine from the Budgies, so I need a manager who can deliver tomorrow, no ifs or buts! If he delivers then I'll be flying the flag behind enemy lines wearing my Ipswich shirt with pride, if he comes up short though, then after I've deleted my 100+ texts from gloating Norwich fans don't be surprised if I go rather negative on here, in that circumstance it will be fully justified. I pray Mr Hurst's honeymoon gets indefinitely extended with a glowing performance. We can all drink to that! Come 2pm tomorrow we'll know one way or the other. That is unless we get a draw and then I'll stay rooted on the fence for the time being but as each week passes I'm likely to tip in the direction of the likes of blueboy1981 (who already has a few alarm bells ringing about Mr Hurst) as I can only take so many fixtures sitting rock bottom before I have to question have we got the right man or did we allow Mr Right go down a league to Sunderland right under our noses?
