Walters Out for Six Months
Wednesday, 26th Sep 2018 16:58

Striker Jon Walters will be out for six months having suffered a partial rupture of his achilles during Saturday’s 0-0 draw with Bolton Wanderers. The 35-year-old was forced off shortly after coming on as a sub against his former club.

"One-time skipper Walters rejoined the Blues late in August on loan from Burnley until January and now won’t play again before that spell is due to end.

Walters, who has made just two starts and the weekend sub appearance without scoring, will return to Turf Moor to undergo his rehabilitation.

The Republic of Ireland international, who had missed the match against Brentford having initially suffered an achilles problem in the previous game at Hull, underwent a scan at the weekend, then saw a specialist in London today where he was given the bad news regarding the extent of the injury.

“I’m obviously gutted with the news,” Walters told the club website. “That’s football though. That’s life I suppose as well and while I’m really disappointed, there are a lot of people worse off than me.""

“I’ll work hard and get back to fitness as soon as I can. I’ve enjoyed being back here and I want to wish the club all the best for the rest of the season.”

Speaking after Saturday's game, manager Paul Hurst admitted it was an incorrect call to include Walters.

“Clearly it was the wrong decision to involve him and I’m the one to make that decision," he said.

"But I think Jon would certainly be the first one to say that he trained yesterday [Friday] and said he felt fine.

“We said we’d look at it again in the morning to see if anything developed overnight and he said he felt fine.

“He’s an experienced pro, I’m sure desperate to be involved, but if he didn’t feel he was right he wouldn’t have put himself up for selection."

Walters's injury means Hurt will no longer have to make a decision on which of his six loanees to leave out of his matchday squad with only five permitted.

Any Achilles injury takes forever to recover. I was amazed he was even on the bench, having had an Achilles injury the week before. As soon as he dropped to the ground it was clearly his Achilles.

Very poor decision to have let him play.

At least he lasted longer than Kuqi all those years ago when he signed on loan and did his hamstring the first time he ran. All ended rather tamely on that occasion too. Walters must be disappointed as we all are.

Thee amount of deluded idiots who grace this site is mind boggling! Keep supporting Marcus and the shambles of a football club we are! I for one won't be chucking my hand earned cash at someone who clearly has NO ambition and a manager who is clearly out of his depth! And before you numpties say ‘pi$$ off to Norwich' ‘you ain't a proper supporter' the reason I get so irate is because I care that much! Evans has destroyed this club! Can anyone say hand on heart we are better or seen an improvement since Jim Magilton? Oh yes we made the playoffs with a manager many of you who call the worst we have ever had.. DELUDED!! A change was needed but once again Evans has got something else wrong!!

On 6 july 2018, twtd ran an interview with Chris Skitt (see archives - just type chris skitt in the search engine) and he basically said would you rather have a player take two weeks longer to come back from injury and be fit for the season or rush a player back and they are out for the season.

So what went wrong. Clearly, Walters has not been fit since he arrived and clearly he wasn't fit enough to be on the bench. Whilst i don't fully understand the Dozzell situation this is no different. An ageing player will breakdown with injuries and they will take longer to heal. The question that has to be asked is who was culpable here - Skitt for saying he was fit for bench duty or Hurst for putting him on bench ahead of Skitt's advice.

Yes it was a freak(ish) injury but Walters was not fit.

Very poor all round.

Oyston out!!!!!!!

Uriah Hurst said it was his 'calf' when he took him off : showing that he knows as much about human anatomy as he does about managing a football team at this level ...

I don't know who decided Jon Walters was fit to play or not but at least he gave it a go. What worries me more is the three regular sick notes Adeyemi, Huws and Bishop just when are they going to be fit to play or are they out for the rest of the season again.

How do we know that Hurst didn't ask Walters whether he felt he could play. Please do not make stupid moronic post when you don't know the full facts.

Cat. Agreed re Jackson. On Saturday his movement and power was reminiscent of the last number 9 (at times).

cat, not knocking you,or your your belief, but i really cant see that many goals in either Jackson or Harrison ,as for giving things till end of October , the fixtures look unlikely to yield many points ,i think we will be in deep sh#t by then ,pass Swn 98 another tissue.

I watched Jon in the warm up on Saturday and he was working fine and looked very jaunty. It's just one of those medical things that you cannot predict, so please lay off Hurst. It's not his fault. We needed Jon. Worried now from where our goals are going to come from. Quite a simple game really: we have to score more than the opposition

It's getting worse & worse news for town that is a huge blow. All the best Jonny Walters.
I'll give Hurst a month to get it right at town, if not he'll be gone!!

Swn98 ........ 'you support the Club'...... ?????????????? - you mean you support McCarthy - you're nothing but an insult to ITFC , along with a few other non ambitious - 'as long as a ball is kicked' - no hopers.

You all know who you are - just look at the posts - self identifiable.

LWNR2013 - agree, he looks a handful, strong, quick and good in the air, if he gets more service he will score goals.
DirtyDing - 9 games, 5 draws and 4 losses ain't a disaster, so I won't get on his case yet, besides I like the system he ‘trying' to adopt, so for them reasons the ‘jury is still out' Tissues for swn, quality!! lol

Get well soon Jon.

I don't blame Hurst for injury but all the other his decisions have been bad since the day one. The squad from last season was good enough to play in this level and there were good youngsters to step in. I thought Hurst would bring his own approach on playing football on ground and with few good summer signings make the team even better.

But no, he decided to change half of the team. Sold the best ones, sent own youngsters to loan and got in ten players without any experience in this level. And now after ten matches he has no clue who should be in starting eleven, not even keeper. I can't see any chances that he can turn the ship. He's out after next three matches. Hopefully next managet can save the team from relegation.

Can't help but feel desperately sorry for JW. To pick up this sort of injury, given his age, must be a real concern regarding long term implications. Hope he manages to recover, and wish him well.

No doubt his presence around the club will be missed - he possesses experience, authority and natural leadership, taking some of the pressure off of Luke Chambers, and helping PH who, in my opinion, is finding the step up significantly more challenging than perhaps he imagined. But it's happened, and we have to get on with securing that first win. The longer it goes, the more confidence and belief drips away that little bit more.

It isn't the end of the world, as Walters himself says: but we had to expect it, Kuqi did the same on his return I remember. It's backs against the wall now: are we going to back the new man or wish we could start over 4 months ago? No regrets, we HAVE to get behind the team - regardless of views of any manager.

Very sensible and well worded post herfie.
Hope that Jon Walters can recover and play again at a decent level.
I would also think that he could have a good future in football after his playing days are over. He has great temperament and is very knowledgeable about the game. A good motivator as well.

Never thought I'd say this but I really think PHwould benefit from having a DOF, real one, not a scout by another name.

Hope Walters recovers well from his injury, sad situation that should never have been allowed to occur in the first place.
