Reports elsewhere this morning are incorrect in claiming that Town's Worthington Cup fate is purely dependent on Fulham and Aston Villa's progress in the Intertoto Cup.

As the Football League told us last week even if neither Villa or Fulham qualify for the UEFA Cup via the Intertoto, the Premiership could veto Town taking the last of the eight byes to the third round.

Normally, the highest side in the Premiership which isn't involved in European competition would get the final Worthington Cup bye. This year it would be West Ham.

The Football League, Premiership and Town have been in discussion with a decision expected by the end of the month. The draw for the first round is in early August.

If Town fail to get the bye to round three then they are almost certain to start in the second round.
