Lambert: Another Striker Would Be Great
Tuesday, 25th Jun 2019 14:16

Blues boss Paul Lambert says it would be great to add another frontman to his strike force having already signed James Norwood from Tranmere.

Asked whether he needs more strikers with only Norwood and Kayden Jackson fit from those who ended the season, Lambert said: “I’ve got Jordan Roberts as well, so I think we need one or two as well somewhere else to try and help and if we get another striker, great.

“If you’ve got four strikers then you’ve got to try and keep everybody happy, there’s a lot of games that can be thrown at us, you can be playing 61 or 62 games quite easily, we’re going to need everybody.

"We’re not a good enough side to rely on one or two people, we’re going to need everybody and I think it’s important that everybody gets games.”

Will Keane impressed when on loan at Portman Road in the second half of last season, during which time he netted three goals while also spending much of his time on the sidelines due to injury. The 26-year-old was released at the end of the season by Hull City and is currently a free agent.

Asked whether Keane is still on his radar, Lambert said: “I don’t know, Will’s obviously got the rehab on his hamstring at the minute, Will’s probably still rehabbing with that.

“That’s what the situation is. We’ll have to wait and kind of see what Will’s doing at this moment. I don’t know whether he might be on holiday or if the rehab is still going on. At the minute, I need everybody fully fit to perform.”

Regarding Ellis Harrison’s departure for Portsmouth last week for £450,000, he added: “The club got the offer and we said, ‘Okay maybe if we’re trying to get James in with four strikers, which would be hard to carry on that side of it.

“And we thought Eilis maybe wanted to go as well, it’s been hard with him here with injuries and things like that.

“There’s no problem with Ellis, he’s a good guy and we just never had him really fit. I made a decision, and there’s no ill feeling or animosity at all, just a decision we made.”

Regarding Roberts, who was back at pre-season training having spent the end of the season on loan at Lincoln, Lambert said: “Jordan did well when he first came in, and it was tough after that. We let him out on loan to Lincoln, but Jordan led the line for us really well in the first few games.

“As I said before, a lot of things can happen between now and the end of the window, and we’ll see what happens.”

Why get rid of Harrison then?...obviously looking for one on the free, another central defender is also a must.

Probably looking at a CB, Full Back, Winger and ST before the end of the window to give us a good chance of competing (plus a GK should Bart leave)

I really don't get why we let Harrison go for £250k less than we paid a year ago. Are we really going to be able to sign a striker on a free transfer with his experience of scoring and ability at this level? Hope I'm wrong but I'd be surprised.

BlueBlood90 what about James Norwood?

No problem with Harrison going, 1 goal and injuries were his contribution. Jackson has done nothing. Roberts put in a good shift to impress PL then tailed off so would question his attitude and commitment. Send them all on their way and start afresh in my opinion. I would like to see a fit Will Keane paired up with Norwood, would be prolific partnership I think.

@Saxonblue74 Jackson scored 4 and looked a threat when paired with a bigger striker...

If we can get Tom Eaves in (he's on a free) we won't miss Ellis
Tom Eaves would partner really well with Norwood & Sears/Jackson and is exactly the man we need. Tall, strong an aerial threat, as well as not too shabby with the ball at his feet and pacey for his size. Scored 18+ the last 2 years in an average-poor Gillingham side.

Hopefully with Ellis' wages off the books, Eaves is being lined up

MRL, Jackson scored 4 but missed a load of sitters too! Goals he should have scored whether Premier league or Sunday league!

@MichaelRockyLavelle Would love to see Eaves at Ipswich. That would make our strikeforce look so much more healthy. Appreciate there are other positions where we need to strengthen aswell, but Eaves would be great for us.

Roberts isn’t good enough and suspect PL would ideally like to off load him. Sears our until December. That leaves just two strikers. We need four. Another permanent addition plus perhaps a half season loan to cover Sears until he returns is the answer? Either way we must sign another striker.

I don't think either Roberts or Jackson are out and out target men the key word being target men Roberts just isn't good enough Jackson's got pace but his overall game is not tight enough control etc but could be a valuable squad player. To sum up i don't think we've ever replaced Darrell Murphy we need a big physical target man especially in this league.

Do not understand the EH decision Mr Lambert. Lets hope we do get a better replacement.

Harrison missed some sitters too. But his positioning was terrible imo (hence he had less to miss! :∆ )

@MSGasms & @LinkBoy
Totally agree re: target man & Eaves. Personally I think he should have been higher on Lambert's list than Norwood
We need a target man in this league for sure. (& to play 2 upfront!)

@Jas - totally agree another striker + loan till Jan would be smart

MichaelRockyLavelle added 22:31 - Jun 25
In truth - I think we should have tried to sign Eaves in Jan (as he only had 6mnths of contract) and he might have kept us up (certainly better than Quaner or Keane - mainly because he's in form & fit!)

Think there is about as much chance of us signing Tom Eaves as there is of Leon Best being re-signed.

BlueBlood90 added 09:03 - Jun 26

Norwood's had two good seasons in his whole career. One in the conference and last year in League Two. I'm not knocking him and think he's a good signing, but he's as much of a gamble this year as expecting Harrison and Jackson to perform in a higher league was last year.

Harrison is a proven striker at this level and that's why we should've kept him, especially if we're still looking for another capable striker on a free transfer.

Linkboy13 added 10:52 - Jun 26
Harrison's not a proven striker at any level he doesn't score goals people are getting too carried away with one deflected goal against Sheffield United .
