Town Closing in On Garbutt Loan
Thursday, 11th Jul 2019 14:19

TWTD understands Town are closing in on the season-long loan signing of Everton left-back Luke Garbutt.

Rumours that Garbutt was at Playford Road surfaced earlier this month and it now appears that the 26-year-old was indeed at the club with the move having been ongoing for a few weeks.

The Blues have been in the market for a left-back this summer with Jonas Knudsen having departed at the end of last season.

Myles Kenlock was the only other established left-sided full-back, although Tristan Nydam, primarily a central midfielder, can play that role and filled in during the second half at Paderborn on Saturday.

Garbutt joined Everton’s youth set-up from Leeds in 2009 but has made only eight starts - three in the Premier League - and four sub appearances - two in the top flight - for the Toffeemen.

However, the 5ft 10in tall Harrogate-born left-back has gained plenty of senior experience while out on loan at Cheltenham, Colchester, Fulham, Wigan and Oxford United, where he spent the whole of last season and latterly featured in a left wing role.

Contracted to Everton until the summer of 2020, Garbutt has also won England caps at U16, U17, U18, U19, U20 and U21 levels.

Garbutt could join up with the squad in Germany for the final days of the pre-season camp and may make his first appearance in a Town shirt in the Interwetten Cup in Meppen on Sunday.

Yes, let's just support the team, stick our heads in the sand and ignore everything that's wrong about the club. And if we put fingers in our ears and go la la la everything will be fine. La la la la la la la...…. is it OK yet?

A good signing I reckon. Kenlock looked awful last season, he may be one of our own but he's not good enough.

Friend of mine is an Oxford fan and he would've loved to have seen him back after last year. Brought in as a left back he was much improved playing in a forward role as a left winger

A lot of our best players over the last few (dark) years have been loan players.......Pennington, Chabolah, Williams, Lawrence, Celina etc. I do agree that you can have too many loans but a few good ones are good business sense and can make a lot of improvement to a squad......especially if season long.

Need to give Clements a chance. He's more than capable at this level, there again Kenlock should cope better. We will see.

Who's to say he's not coming in as a left winger? By all accounts this was where he was best last season. Can always drop in to left back as cover if needed.

Ok, so he can't get in a premier league team.

There are few Englishmen that can!

We know we won't be signing players for a fee.

With the mass exodus of players over the summer, why not take a loan or two?

We won't be the only club in this division to do so.

Yes it will put our youngsters under pressure to rise to the challenge of making the 1st team.

And rightly so!

Saw him a couple of times at left back for England under 21s in the 2015 Euros in the Czech Republic. Watched him closely as we were being linked to him at the time. He was poor, probably the worst England player on the pitch. That would explain why he hasn't kicked on at Everton and why he's now being loaned to a League One club. But he maybe he will be a decent loan signing for us at League One level. I hope so as we need an upgrade on Kenlock defensively if we expect to be challenging for automatic promotion.

Give him a try. Don't give a flying duck what Oxford fans think, don't give a flying duck how he's played, that was last season or whenever.

Let's get behind the Garbutt, you never know he may tear up League 1.

I'd have preferred to have built a squad and then topped it up with a loan, at most two. Very early to be bringing in a loan to potentially replace one of our players. I just hope our other signings - and we need them - are not loans otherwise Evans will have learnt nothing. No doubt we needed a left back though.

I think this could be great for us. Take him on loan then if all goes according to plan and we get promoted we could look at signing him when his contract is up. Sadly football never seems that simple!

I'm with TimmyH on this one. I'd like to see Kenlock and Nydam fight it out for the LB spot as I'm sure they will both be excellent for us in L1. Nydam isn't good enough (atm) to get in to CM as that's the one area we are strong. As PL keeps telling us there's no money to spend so should we not be paying out loan wages in areas that we really need help in... upfront and genuine wingers?

...,,, “ relies heavily on loan players”...,

How many loan players do we have at the Club now ?

I suspect Lambert will do as he stated earlier ....,, ie get ONE or TWO in( no more) . That's not being heavily reliant on loan players IMHO .

Bluearmy - yep Rotherham have got six in . Only paid a fee for one of them! But hey , don't let facts get in the way of an Evans rant.

Oh and by the way bluearmy_81 RUFC also still have a smaller squad than ITFC mainly because they released or returned 13/14 players as opposed to ITFC 9/10.
But of course saying it how it is doesn't assist inane rant at the owner.
Anyway to help us all and because you claim that FFP has nothing to do with it, kindly just briefly outline the rules for us.

at least if he turns out to be any good we wont be able to sell him..like we do all or own good leftbacks..

I'm not against us using the loan market to get one or two quality additions. What I wasn't nearly so keen on was when the team was stacked full of loan players. Norwich also went down that path and found it didn't work. We've tried it and we also found it's far from ideal. But when used sensibly the loan market can prove very positive indeed. Norwich once got Crouch and Huckerby (before signing the latter) on loan and that worked out very well indeed. I think without Tom Lawrence we might well of been relegated even with Bart's heroics that season. Also Ryan Fraser proved a superb loan signing before getting injured. That said, I don't know much about Luke Garbutt. But if Lambert is keen then let's see how it works out. I have been asking for quality over quantity so hopefully Garbutt can fit into the quality bracket but will need to see him kick a few balls at least first before knowing whether he's one to get excited about or not. I think we have a decent enough squad on paper, we are going to need more luck in the injury department though to have a decent chance of getting out of this league sooner rather than later. Usually injuries to key players can prove fatal to the chances of a team. However, sometimes short-term injuries can have a positive effect as it gives other players a chance to grab the opportunity with both hands and stake a real claim to keep the place for keeps. Sometimes you can get unexpected bonuses on that front come out of almost nowhere.

Speaking of Crouch, just read he's announced his retirement today.
