Sunderland and Peterborough Linked With Wilson
Friday, 11th Oct 2019 12:09

Sunderland and Peterborough United are reportedly eyeing Blues centre-half James Wilson, whose short-term deal is up on New Year’s Day.

According to Football Insider, the Black Cats, who are currently without a manager having sacked boss Jack Ross earlier in the week, and Posh are keeping tabs on the 30-year-old due to his contract situation and could target the Welshman in the January window.

Wilson joined the Blues in the summer following a trial having left Lincoln by mutual consent and has enjoyed an impressive first couple of months at Portman Road.

Speaking last week, manager Paul Lambert said extending Wilson’s deal needs to be addressed.

“He's certainly doing himself no harm whatsoever,” he said. “And I'm pretty sure it's something we need to look at.”

With the squad rotation policy in place AND working we need to sign him up on a longer deal rather than risk letting him go in the new year. It's all about strength in depth.

Keep him on a fair deal. He has done well and deserves an extension. Money talks though, but I imagine he likes it here.

Well played to Wilson's agent for getting this story out there.

Pretty clear we need him if we continue to play three at the back

And pretty clear he'd rather stay with us than risk it all somewhere else

I imagine both parties will happily extend : )

Extend to the end of the season with the option of another year. Although with his age he probably wants something longer term

Well that didn't take long...10/11 games in, why the hell would he want to go to Peterboro for?

TimmyH if you look at his last 3 clubs (Sheffield U, Walsall, Lincoln) then Peterborough is probably closer to his home.

When he signed he said he would be travelling until he had something concrete.

Nobody panic, he's gone from being a league 2 benchwarmer to a regular in league 1 table toppers, as long as we offer him a deal he should stay, which we almost certainly will do.

As FPL Tractor says, this is probably agent driven speculation. However, he shouldn't be on high wages, so giving him an 18 month deal would probably be sensible and a lot cheaper than having to buy another centre-back.

Good timing from the agent! Now he's got a bit of leverage in the negotiation process.

I think he is a quality centre half and has played extremely well in all games that he has featured. Would be sad if he left.

Really does seem to be a very good part of a successful team and squad ; can't imagine after his comments that PL would want him to go,especially with no money to come in .We're being creative and leak free and this man has made himself rather useful !
Let's get him signed up as PL suggested !

Would certainly give him deal to end of season as I've been impressed with the games I've seen him in.
Having said that WHEN not if we get promoted this season I'm not sure I would want him/Chambers as potential 1st choice centre back combo next year.
Nothing against him as I said I've been impressed by him but championship is MILES tougher league than where we are at minute, so this is an area I would hope we would strengthen for next season.
I would also make Garbutt ABSOLUTE PRIORITY and would like to see woollfenden one of main centre backs for next year as have been even more impressed by him, I also don't go along with that crap about being too young to be 1st choice, if your good enough then you're old enough and to me he looks easily good enough. I thought after watching Blackburn game last season he was desperately unlucky to be shipped out and should have had more game time with us, particularly how we defended/played last year

More then useful squad player but more importantly both these teams have defensive problems, why on earth should ITFC provide the answer?!

Should imagine he want to stay and for the security of him and his family needs something more than a short term contract so understand that his agent is circulating this. Up to Evans & Co to get this across the line as he is a good fit with our squad.

Let's hope the club can get a deal done for him. Been a good signing

Equally comfortable in a back 4 or 3, well worth a deal. I am happy I came to his defence on this site earlier in the year when it was first revealed he was being looked at.

I hope those who slated him for not being a regular at Lincoln, without ever seeing him play, have learned their lesson.

Get him signed up P.L says it should be addressed and after what that man has done for this club he should be listened to eh Marcus!?

He has been great for us this season. Offer him a two year deal now.

When we signed this guy a lot of people on this site were saying what a stupid signing can't even get in the Lincoln team , one of them being Dolphin Blue who seems to have gone into hibernation .l always say give a player a chance who ever he is, and so far he's done well especially in the air where we are a bit vulnerable Peterborough away springs to mind. Probably all this talk about other clubs being interested is agents trying to up his value .

When we took him on trial PL and MM took quite a bit of flak from the negative brigade, no ambition etc etc Just goes to show . Well done to Wilson , he deserves a deal.
