Palace Eyeing Downes
Monday, 6th Jul 2020 17:06

TWTD understands Crystal Palace are showing interest in Town midfielder Flynn Downes.

Downes was one of the Blues’ star performers during 2019/20 and caught the eye of a number of clubs from higher divisions, among them Fulham and West Ham.

Palace sporting director Dougie Freedman was spotted at Town’s 2-1 defeat at Blackpool in February, the Blues' last away game prior to the lockdown.

It had been believed that Luke Woolfenden was the reason for the former Scotland international's trip to Bloomfield Road, however, we now understand it is Downes who has crossed Palace’s radar.

Whether the Premier League Eagles or any of the other interested parties opt to firm up their interest in the England U20 international before the start of 2020/21 remains to be seen.

The 21-year-old is contracted to the Blues until the summer of 2022 with Town having an option for a further season.

Meanwhile, the Newcastle Chronicle has dismissed this afternoon's report claiming Town are chasing Sunderland striker Charlie Wyke.

Black Cats boss Phil Parkinson is said to be keen to keep the former Bradford frontman on Wearside.

Town are also reported to have shown interest in Swindon striker Eoin Doyle, 32, who is close to joining Bolton Wanderers on a three-year deal.

Oh great , midfield stuck with useless Nolan , bought by useless Hurst , and lose best young home grown talent . Also linked to yet more non entities , and past it lower league players . Its impossible to see how ITFC can get out of this hole now, .

Looked in depth at Doyle as had some time free...34 appearances for Swindon...26 goals...Impressive stats....especially as many of those appearances were from the subs bench...

I think Huws could do a job in the middle in the part as he was starting to show some of the form of when he first came here. If he is truly over his injury problems.
Huws and Nolan as the middle two as I feel that Nolan given a run would do well as he is a proven League 1 player, or give McGiven or Bishop the spot.
There is potencal there.

Downes has dominated some of the games this season and for his own good should move on to bigger challenges.
We will miss him I do not feel confident that good replacements would be brought in, - although Norwood and Vincent Young signings suggest that someone has an eye for a player at the club

Dont get yourselves in state chaps, its the same every season ,links rumours ,claims, denials, false hopes . At the end of the day we will more likely lose our promising players, and take on some that are passed it or have fitness issues. Thats how it works at ITFC.

I doubt we'd get top dollar from Palace. They always seem keen on a bargain. Their bids for Bart were below what we were wanting at the time (and they wouldn't budge) I seem to recall. Although looking back we should of sold then given he ended up losing his form under Hurst and we only got peanuts later in comparison from Millwall. But as always, hindsight is a wonderful thing!
Hopefully if we are to sell Downes then another Premier League Club (such as West Ham) will also show interest as it helps the valuation to have two bidding rather than just one.
Sadly a young League One player with potential won't typically command as high a price as a young Championship player.
League One might of worked as a rebuild exercise for one season but Lambert failed in that enterprise and if we don't get out at the next time of asking it gets that much harder.
Obviously Covid-19 is another major wildcard in trying to predict what will happen going forwards.

Wouldn't bank on the potential transfer fee being injected into the club in a proper way. Just look back at previous transfers... Garner, Waghorn, and McGoldrick all departed under Hurst / Evans 'watchful eye', and who did we replace them with? Jackson & Harrison. Enough said there.

another connor wickham/ Richard Wright situation i fear. Big moves that ruin the player.

Was he really one of our star performers !!! Other than a header at Tranmere I hardly noticed him. He's a lifetime away from premiership standard.Vastly overrated but ok for a mid table league 1 outfit.

I really really want Flynn to stay but imho staying at Town would be the worst thing for his career as he needs to play in the Championship against better opposition and under a good manager and coaching staff who will develop him as a player. Saddens me to say it but I think he's gone as far as he can at Ipswich.

Evans agrees to sell these players to cover his costs......yet a couple years later they are worth so much more......Adam Webster is a very average CB yet worth consider Bristol City made a huge profit
