Palace Again Linked With £4m Downes
Saturday, 18th Jul 2020 09:33

Crystal Palace are again being linked with Blues midfielder Flynn Downes with Town said to targeting a fee of around £4 million for the 21-year-old.

TWTD revealed the Eagles’ interest in Downes earlier this month, now The Athletic lists the academy product on a list of young players Palace are eyeing as they look to bring down the average age of their squad ahead of 2020/21.

They claim the Blues are holding out for a fee of around £4 million for England U20 international Downes, who is contracted until the summer of 2022 with the club having an option for a further season.

As TWTD previously reported, Palace sporting director Dougie Freedman was at Town’s game at Blackpool at the end of February as the Selhurst Park club continued an ongoing watching brief. We understand they made Town an offer in January which was rebuffed.

West Ham have also made their interest known to the Blues, while Fulham are among the other clubs to have been keeping tabs on the Brentwood-born schemer, who TWTD readers voted their 2019/20 Town Player of the Year and Young Player of the Year.

Speaking to TWTD just over a week ago, general manager of football operations Lee O’Neill said Downes is in no hurry to leave Portman Road.

“Flynn’s really happy here, he’s itching to get back into training and games, as all the players are really,” he said.

“The way it finished and the way we finished as a club is not what they want going forward so they want to go and make amends and they want to put it right.

“He’s as committed to the football club as he’s always been all the way through his journey.”

Downes and the rest of his team-mates are set to return to Playford Road for training under strict safety guidelines on Tuesday.

Palace are notoriously tight in the transfer market so the lowish offer doesn't surprise me in the least. They should change that badge from an Eagle to a Vulture! :-)

The club want people to donate hard earned cash. They deserve better than giving players away for way less than they are worth.

RegencyBe: But he's not a “ league one player” though is he! He's clearly a high end Championp player.

No, as usual ITFC will undersell or gift away their prized assets. Nodge are a STREETS AHEAD in the way they do business. Just when will we learn? And how about we actually pla6 hard ball and say that little word, NO!

Keep him for one more season and let's get out of this shyte hole of a division. If we Continue to give away our best players the decline will continue.

The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result.

When will we stop going round in circles as a club?

Why do people talk of such low sell on %s ? How about 50%. If Palace think he's a decent player, they will think his value is much higher so could accept 50% as that still gives room for profit. They could accelerate his value upwards so potentially profit quickly if they wanted.

We never have been any good at selling our prized assets! !986 and we had just been relegated into the old 2nd division, so we sell Terry butcher to rangers for 725K and Norwich sell Watson, half the player butcher was to Everton for 900K. We have always been pathetic at selling! gonna make the same mistake with Downes. We will let him go for a paltry fee with add ons!

Doesn't have the leadership qualities or discipline to be a captain, and certainly doesn't have the ability to play in the premiership.A very ordinary league 1 player this last season, who week in/week out came up against better, and certainly didnt stand. All in all I'd sooner keep him, but for a vastly overrated and very limited player it's a decent offer....tho what Palace are thinking is beyond me !!

Some unrealistic moaners on here. How much do we really expect to get for a league 1 midfielder who is largely unproven at a higher level? Most clubs in this league would kill for £4m. That's more than enough to buy a couple of quality players in this division, especially given what we already have at our disposal. Unfortunately £4m is fair value given our current level, but invest part of it wisely and it's more than enough to get us out of this league. Let's just hope the powers that be do use it wisely...

I think some people need to wake up and smell reality if they think we are going to get any more than 4m for him in L1.

What people need to realise is that League One players (no matter their ability or potential) just don't go for big fees. Look at Luke Matheson at Rochdale - their youngest ever player with England youth honours and Wolves just come in and snap him up for a measly £1m. Oxford lost arguably two of their best players for relatively small fees - Shandon Baptiste for £2.25m and Tariqe Fosu for just £750k. It makes Downes at £4m seem a comparatively decent fee even though we would get £10m+ if we were a Championship club.

Ffs, get out if the O'Neil, you have never been a salesman and have no idea how to do it. Tip1 tell the press, "Arsenal are preparing a £10m bid". Tip2 Start high and come down NOT the other way round. Tip3 Stick to be s trainer.

He will go, and we will settle for some cockeyed deal ,where we get a bit of cash and the rest will dribble into the accounts over time and we wont see the benefit of it. .Being hopeful as an ITFC is a painful experience , i for one have had enough , and given up hope. Totally fed up with how things have gone ,and cant see things getting better, Evans is a failure, Lambert it is a failure, and the team and performances are getting what they deserve , failure .Things were on a downward spiral, and the extended contract given to Lambert capped it all .I wont knock those who continue to pay up ,and support the club, BUT i am amazed that so many continue to do so . We wont hold onto any players worth their salt, and will just slide into obscurity .The history of the club is just that ,history.

Nobody seems to realise that if a PL club comes in for one of our players, the decision will be greatly influenced by the player's own wishes. I would want to keep Downes but cannot see it happening if his head is turned and who would blame him. It wouldn't matter so much if Dozzell stepped up to the mark but he has had plenty of chances to do so. This sadly is one of the realities of being in League One but even without Downes the squad is capable of promotion if they all click and the rotation policy is abandoned for good.

L1 players don't go for £4M, unfortunately we have to live with that.

If ye honestly believe the rumours then shame on you! If Crystal Palace came in... Downes would be gone... No player is loyal when money comes to the table... It's 2020...more money, more greed

The wages likely to be on offer to him are bound to turn his head and, sadly for us, who could blame him if he took the opportunity. I hope that he stays if offers come in but do think that we should hold out for more than the quoted 4million.

For all those saying he is only a league 1 player and not worth anymore, i say this! Theo Walcott moved to arsenal from Southampton for 12 million( initial fee being 5 mil up front with add ons whilst only a youth team player who had played in saints reserves. He was only 17.

4 million is not enough! we need to be more brutal in what we sell our players for!

Keep him next season, make him Captain instead of the Non -leading, Non-winner tw@t that calls himself skipper and build a midfield around him. We need a team of hungry young players as the older ones have proven over the last 2 seasons that they aren't up for it. Build a side of winners, players that care and will fight for the cause. Chambers,Kenlock, Nsiala and Donacien, get rid................

Perhaps a way round it would be sell him for 2.5/3 mil then take him on loan for the season with palace pick up the tab.that would be near the 4million Mark and we have him for one more season.doupt very much he would get in palace(;or whoever buys him) first team right now so could be a win win all round.only trouble is this is Ipswich and more than likely we'll get screwed as per usual.

The same fans saying ‘he's a league one player that's all we can expect' ‘Be real he's a league one player' are the same fans condoning the fact evans has taken us to our lowest point in over 50 years. He's a top side championship player and if he goes we are literally giving away one of only 4 players in my opinion capable of playing in that higher league. He's proven at championship level so we should get those prices. It last remarkable people on here don't see the same thing every season but condone it. Wait until season tickets are sold then any quality we have gets sold. This is why for the first time in over 30 years I cannot bring myself to get another season ticket I'm fed up as are clearly 4000 other fans from last season with the same old rubbish coming out from our club we ALL love. Stop condoning what Evans has done that's what's wrong with us settling for average league one spot now. Poor scouting network, poor managers, clegg, underselling players even when in the championship like Webster (we sell for 5 million season later goes for 25 mill), growing debt contributed by us selling players way to cheaply, lack of investment and all by an owner who IS the 6th richest outside the premier league!? And you condone what he's done right? He can hide as his supporters do behind FFP when you see a club with half the support buying players and competing near the top in Brentford new stadium and going up, Leeds broke FFP but too late guess what they're going up. Get a grip and see Evans is doing the bare minimum and don't come at me with he's got a financial black hole this year of 9 million because again if he's invested right in the championship or when we were top of it he wouldn't be moaning about these extra losses now

all these comments about selling him for more than 4 million [a figure we are unlikely to get in a lump anyway ]. He played well in a poor team and in a disastrous season , Lets be honest it didnt take much to be a stand out player in the team last year. We have had players in the past hyped up for amazing futures ,and they never cut it .We are just another lge 1 team now , bite the bullet , smell the coffee , we are not likely to hold on to any player worth 4 million equally we are not going to sign anyone with that sort of price tag . The ship has been sinking for years , the hole is still there and the pumps are not working , any player with ambition of making it to the promised land will jump ship as soon as they get a chance ,and who could blame them.

Town will struggle to stay up next season. Sorry to be negative. Giving Lambert a new deal was a massive mistake.
