O'Neill: Evans Will Take as Long as Needed to Make Appointment
Monday, 1st Mar 2021 11:18

Town general manager of football operations Lee O’Neill says owner Marcus Evans will take as long as necessary to appoint a successor to Paul Lambert, who left the club along with his assistant Stuart Taylor yesterday.

Former Chesterfield, Portsmouth and Wigan boss Paul Cook is a strong favourite for the role, but O’Neill says Evans is in no rush to make an appointment and confirmed that first-team coach Matt Gill will be in caretaker charge. We understand he will be assisted by academy head of player and coaching development Bryan Klug.

“Marcus is working on it now but will take as long as is needed,” O'Neill told the club site.

“He'll be speaking to people about the role and in the interim period we are confident that Matt can do what is needed on a game-by-game basis.

“Our goalposts haven't changed though, and we want to get the results that can get us promoted this season.

“We feel with a new manager and some momentum we can push on for the remainder of the campaign."

Regarding tomorrow night's game at Accrington, he added: “Matt Gill is going to step in and take charge tomorrow.

“He will be assisted by Bryan Klug, and all the usual first-team staff around that.

“The boys have been in good form, and the focus is 100 per cent on the game tomorrow night.”

blues1 - I think O'Neill could be here in some capacity even if/when the takeover does happen.

Does anyone else read into this statement that if he is going to appoint the new manager does that mean there is no takeover at all?

all a bit odd, If Evans is appointing a manager whoever it is, unless he is staying put. The consortium surely should appoint a manager after the deal is done and caretaker manager see out the time between. Cook would also only want to sign knowing who he is working for. I suppose things being a#se about face should not surprise us, everything Evans has done since he took over has been a grand f#ck up .

I personally have great reservations about the uncertain future .There's ME autocratic posturing although if you listen to the rumours will only be here for about a month . Then there's th prospect of the rumoured new owners cartel investing in the club from a pension fund . Hey ho it might all work out but at the moment there's a lot of uncertainty

My take on the situation, for what it's worth, is that ME has decided to make a change because he is fed up with bad results on the pitch and Lambert blaming him off it.

So far as any take over is concerned, there might well be talks going on in the background, but they are a long way from a deal, let alone completion.

We could always look left of field like Eddie Newton or sol Campbell the latter did pretty well with two terrible ckint teams so might do OK with a decent skint team

Agree with previous posts that it is strange that ME has any say as to who the new manager will be unless the sale is not as close as we are led to believe. Otherwise we can only assume that the consortium have given ME/LON the ok to appoint Paul Cook.

As regards the new manager, Paul Cook is good with me, Eddie Howe...dream on, he will want to know for certain who the owner will be and what budget if any he will have. Of course it may be the case that the new owners will not commit until we know what division we are playing in and which contracts the new manager wants to renew.

Strange but exciting times!!

It's extremely unusual for an outgoing owner to make a managerial appointment on behalf of the new owners. What happens if the deal falls through and ME is left with a manager not of his choosing? Therefore, Seems likely that the deal to sell the club is already signed!

Not allowed an opinion on a forum now. Thought that's what forums were for. For what it's worth, there is no takeover in the offing, it's absolutely miles off. People are going way over the top with it. Putting 2 and 2 together and getting 5. Evans will still be here come summer.

With Evans we will go nowhere..the quicker he is out the club, the better. Investment investment investment...something that he has patently not done and will never do. He treats the fans like pariahs..no communication and no empathy at all. In these last few weeks there has been no comment from him, just denial in the last 24 hours. Not good enough and the club is dying around him...

Presumably the new Manager will be announced when the deal is announced. The new Manager will be appointed by the new owners. If the deal falls through then Evans will have to find a Manager.

Agree "blues1" the man is out front as a mouthpiece for an owner who won't show his face as it has been since he bought our club if it's not him it will be another in a long line.

If we dilly dally about we will miss out on Cook. I worry how much football knowledge is floating between LO and ME. Hope I'm very wrong

Promotion with the last 3 clubs he's managed, one of those from this league, only issue with me is his assistant is still at Wigan, can he do it without him or will he come to !! So knows the league and how to get out of it, held his own in the championship, plays football the right way. Strong case for Paul Cook i think !!
