Town Takeover Stalls
Monday, 15th Mar 2021 17:03

TWTD understands that as things stand the proposed US-backed takeover of the Blues is off.

As previously reported, a consortium led by former West Brom chief executive officer and Oxford board member Mike O’Leary and co-owners of USL club Phoenix Rising including Brett Johnson was looking to buy the Blues from current owner Marcus Evans in a £30 million deal.

However, we understand the move, which had made significant progress with the EFL involved and Land Registry priority searches in place regarding the training ground, has now stalled and while not yet dead appears much less likely to go through that it did than when the news first broke in late February.

Owner Marcus Evans, who recently appointed Paul Cook as manager, has played down the prospect of a deal being done saying earlier this month that he has received no offer which is "currently acceptable to me or the club”.

Town's position has improved significantly over the last month, the Blues having climbed from mid-table to sixth in League One.

@Monkey_Blue asset stripping you mean like our teams been asset stripped of any real quality from the side we had when he first came in?
When he came 8th only one loss at home that season, team was Wilnis, De Vos, Alex Bruce, Naylor, Legwinski, Cournago, Tommy Miller, Sito, Jonathan Walters, David Wright, Harding and David Norris. Tell me any of you who still support Evans name any players we have now that would get in that side and has shown that quality since being with us?? Thats asset stripping right there!!

Without a cash injection Paul Cook hasn't got a chance of taking us forward . We might have to sell our best players and hope Cook can work some magic in the transfer market that's if Evans doesn't pocket it to help pay off the debt. In the past we produced outstanding young players that came in and made an instant impact and that was at the highest level. Although we are in a very poor league we have not produced one outstanding young player of late the last two being Downes and Wolfenden.

Fail to see how anyone can think we could possibly be better off with Evans. Dolphin is either unwell or a Norwich fans to call Evans a saviour. No support for his comment but some of you are still backing the overall viewpoint, if not the extremity of it. It's like unintended parody, pretty funny if it wasn't so tragic...

Well said, Monkey Blue. Like him or loath him better the devil you know.

Typical of many of the so called fans on here. Simply presuming the reason this has stalled is down to Evan's? Considering the deal was apparently agreed, its more likely there was an issue with the due diligence being carried out by the efl. And if there is an issue regarding this consortium, then I'd say it's much better if the deal doesn't go through.

Bluearmy81 - i have made it abundantly clear in previous posts that i am not a ME fan. Yet you are seriously telling me you would sell the club to Yanks whose only financial background reported by any journalist is a pension pot. Tell me, would you and the rest of your viewpoint happily part with your pension pots to fund the purchase of the club along with say all of your life savings. Even if there is a millionaire amongst you, there is clearly not the funds to run the club or purchase any of the quality players we will really need in the summer. So if you are supporting the Yanks, i would throw it back to you that you are the Norwich fan on here, who watches from afar , never attended any game and baits people with zealous.

As for funds to purchase players no league 1 or 2 club will have that thanks to the bailout and limited income, so it will be wheeling and dealing with which i think PC will be good at.

bring on the play offs - i think we will do well.

BtreeBlueBlood. What has Sunderlands takeover got to do with the way their season has improved? What's improved their season, is the change of manager they had mid season. How far the takeover takes them is still very much open to conjecture.

@blues1 You always say ‘so called fans' for anyone that doesn't worship evans or supports your ideas? I think for the most part people aren't blaming him for it falling through I'm definitely not as we don't know the score but what makes you so sure it also isn't him? You can presume but others can't?

I think a deal was very close to being done but collapsed shortly after the story broke. IMHO that's why Lambert wasn't sacked earlier, Evans was going to leave that to the consortium. Once the deal was off, he moved quickly to bin Lambert and appoint Cook. He was never going to pay off Lambert when there was a prospect that someone else would.

any good business person would have to wonder if others expect to make a profit then why cant they themselves ?

No need for me to phone Marcus tonight to get the full story as there are so many people on here with ‘inside knowledge' of what happened / didn't happen for the deal to stall / be off (delete to suit as TWTD state both) that I'm sure there's nothing Marcus could add.

Marcus said there's no acceptable deal for him and the club on the table. He's kept us afloat for thirteen years which is better than doing a Bolton so I trust him to make the correct call IF and when he moves on. Oh, just a reminder that for the last 12 months he's kept paying the bills with zero match day income xxx

Have to be honest not overly disappointed but saying that something does need to change at the club other than the changing of managers...if Cook fails further down the road you really would have to think that there is something deep rooted at the club and we know that under financing towards the playing squad is only part of the problem (which has been a theme for years now).

This will finish Town off completely.

There goes the season ticket sales, good timing hey Marcus?

Even if we get promoted we would come straight back down.

That's it for me, our squad will be even worse next season with these unmotivated players who haven't experienced pressure or expectation. I wonder where that culture at the top has come from...

Sad day, RIP ITFC that's it.

bobble - it's not a case of if they think they can earn a profit why can't I? As with any business it's down to how much time and investment do I want to make.

If promotion to the Premier League is worth £175million and I want £75 million ‘profit' then my purchase and investment need to come to £100 million at the most BUT I'm only prepared to invest X hours a week in the deal and for three years maximum otherwise it doesn't appeal to me.

Let's pretend £50 million to buy in and £16 million investment per year for three years (we are running at a £6 million loss so that's only £10 million a year really - then you have to find a way of spending it with fair play rules etc)

Of course that £175 million bringing in £75 million profit is nonsensical because you don't sell up the day you get promoted and then get the PL monies for the next three years you don't own the club....... but the club has a revised sell on price so you hope someone is prepared to pay the £175 million to get a ‘free club' but pay the bills for three years and hope we stay up for one season to bring X million in. However the people looking to buy us in that position would IMHO NOT be a good custodian of ITFC.

Texastom - With that sort of negativity then I would imagine the new manager and players are bloody glad you are not buying a season ticket!

Only a matter of time before Paul Cook walks and goes into a proper club management opportunity. Can't believe he wanted to come to a doomed club. What's the attraction? I know he's a long term friends with Marcus but it's not logical.

Crowds will be in 4 figures soon enough, supporters will simply give up going like in the 80s when we achieved 8000!

If nothing changes within 2 years we will fold and have to start all over or end up like Bury.

This whole takeover thing never felt like it was the right one, it felt very much like a gamble, and i for one am glad we are not gambling with our club! Yes things need to change and for the better, not sure how so many on here were so confident that this takeover was going to be towns saviour, i for one wasnt convinced.

Bluearmy_81 added 20:52 - Mar 15
Dog, when we are a joke club in division 3 there isn't much room for fence sitting, you either back Evans or you want him gone. I think Norwich fans are over the moon with how things have been going, I'd guess they are quietly gutted Lambert has gone and will be relieved and happy that the prospect of Evans going has reduced. If you sit on their side fair enough but don't pretend it's the other way round...

Thank you moggasnotebook for actually having something sensible to say.

1. We know brugger all about the details of the proposed takeover. Speculation is futile.
2. ME has looked after the staff during this long crisis.
3. He gave his first two managers money for transfers and they spent it badly.
4. He is now concentrating on the academy. Let's not forget that Sir Bobby's overachievers were mostly products of the youth scheme and that Robson actally made a profit on transfers.

Call me whatever you like, but I am quite pleased to know that Evans is likely to retain ownership for a while.

Mines and Mog mediocrity and failure is not in most people's vocabulary and even you want to aim low that's fine but the reality is you are in the minority. All genuine Town fans want is football which represents 20k fans and for all the staff at ITFC to make an effort in their current employment roles.

It's no coincidence that honesty, integrity and lack of interest (of which there are many versions at ITFC) are missing. That's why we are all angry. Get it now?

It will be really interesting to see how the team now performs in the light of this news ..... and what PC's reaction will be ( if any), based in my own assumption that he's come to this Club on the promise of funding by a consortium.
