Town Takeover Stalls
Monday, 15th Mar 2021 17:03

TWTD understands that as things stand the proposed US-backed takeover of the Blues is off.

As previously reported, a consortium led by former West Brom chief executive officer and Oxford board member Mike O’Leary and co-owners of USL club Phoenix Rising including Brett Johnson was looking to buy the Blues from current owner Marcus Evans in a £30 million deal.

However, we understand the move, which had made significant progress with the EFL involved and Land Registry priority searches in place regarding the training ground, has now stalled and while not yet dead appears much less likely to go through that it did than when the news first broke in late February.

Owner Marcus Evans, who recently appointed Paul Cook as manager, has played down the prospect of a deal being done saying earlier this month that he has received no offer which is "currently acceptable to me or the club”.

Town's position has improved significantly over the last month, the Blues having climbed from mid-table to sixth in League One.

Moggasnotebook yes but isn't that the bare minimum any owner should be doing more so being 6th richest owner outside the premier league? And you point to we dont want to be a Bolton well the decline he has seen us through past 14 years we may very well be playing them in the next couple of years or maybe theyll bypass us on the way up whilst you continue to support him. Ill ask you as noone else can tell me please and this isnt to knock anyone but Where do you feel weve improved as a club under his 14 years?

Minesapint where in your opinion has been the improvement in the club in his 14 years? Its all decline simple. You talk about the youth and he constantly goes on about this in his five point plan but most of those kids with any prospects are sold off before even reaching the under23s, 5 kids in the past two or three seasons now. Tell me honestly how many of those kids we have can make it in the championship were talking about Dozzell etc who have played and failed in that league before? We have maybe a couple of youth players who have come through who could possibly play higher up but thats it until we are a catergory One club we cannot keep the best youngsters or get them from any other areas other than our catchment. As ive said before look how well run Norwich are theyre Category One which means they can keep their players and poach others from cat 2 and below clubs this is why his regurgitated 5 point plan cannot work.

Talk about a collective meltdown! None of you know diddly squat about what's happening any more than our excellent reporters on TWTD. Get behind the players and manager . The squad are here to the end of the season and need our support. They actually read this and havWe have real talent amongst the younger players and you will cry when they start playing in the P.M.

Hear hear Beattiebackpocket!!!

I simply don't understand how people can anyone can support Evans .... the only reason that the takeover has stalled is price .... greed ... performance improves price goes up... the man does not have my clubs interest at heart. The decline of the club is down to one man ... Marcus Evans our unaccountable owner

Evans either knows he's chatting s hit about the youth development (see BBP point) or he's totally ignorant/clueless. Neither option is great...

@dusth I havent seen one post on here saying theyre not behind the players or Manager?? People are talking about the owner?? We all want promotion however it wont change anything unless the owner invests as the team isnt good enough thats been proven we are in a worse state then when we originally came down hence finishing 11th our lowest place in over 60 years?

BeattiesBackPocket I actually agree with a lot of what you said.
Clearly ME has had a lot of failures. A lot of his appointments have been based on some kind of logic that I feel like a football man would have had an instinct about. Clegg was successful in athletics at a high level, Roy Keane got Sunderland promoted, MM got Wolves and Sunderland promoted, Paul Jewel got Wigan promoted, Paul Hurst was the promising young up and coming manager, Paul Lambert marshaled Wolves to relegation and made ready for the right Manager. Through all that he supported the wrong managers leaving not much for the only decent manager in MM. Even Mick wasn't a good fit for the club.
As well as we were run before, we hit a perfect storm in our relegation year from the Premier League and unfotunately it is a straight line to where we are now. I have no doubt that ME came in and saved us, but his mismanagement has been painful to behold. The worst choice I think was the appointment of Roy Keane who was our worst manager in my time as a supporter.
So I'm not laying a case to where we have been in the last 14 years, aside from pointing to a little success in reaching the playoffs once.
In ME's defense, he was spending to the fair play rules that weren't worth the paper they were written on, but of course, it was convenient for him to have an excuse not to spend too much.
Rather than providing a defense of ME, I offer skepticism of the alternative. I didn't see anything to get excited about concerning the potential take over. I really want to see how Cook gets on given a little time and some investment.

BeattiesBackPocket We have a fairly decent squad of players for the division. For all the faults that ME has as an owner (mostly with his recruitment), it is clear that the team has been mismanaged. It felt like Lambert was just rearranging chairs while the Titanic sank.
I'm confident that with basically the same squad PC will get us in the playoffs, and if we lose in the playoffs the team will be challenging for automatic promotion. I don't know how we would fair in the Championship, but it's clear for all to see that the quality of this league is poor. We have still got a chance and we have been hopeless for half the season.

Paul Cook wont be too chuffed if he DID think there was to be new owners, but i dont think that is the case .Evans has signed him up to work miracles on a shoestring, it will keep the gullable and easily pleased happy for a while and sell the season tickets for another season, then it will be back to square one and ''rope a dope'' time again .

I will only get excited when I see a takeover that is in the interests of Ipswich Town FC. Folk can argue about the merits or otherwise of Evans but we know next to nothing about the possible takeover so how on earth can anyone say they would rather have any deal than Evan's ownership is ludicrous. We all know that investment is required but an alternative to Evan's miserly and invisible leadership must be built upon a sound business case not just a loathing of Evans. It has to be a long term fix.

Beattiesbackpocket. The reason I say so called supporters, is that, into, you dont support a team based on who the owner is. It's our team, and I will support them, whatever division we are in, regardless of who the owner is. Theres fans on here saying they wont renew season tickets while hes the owner. So, they moan he doesnt spend enough on players(which isnt strictly true, as all signing is cost money), but then withdraw their money from tbe club, which means we'll end up spending even less. I'm not an Evan's fan, and would like him to sell, but I also would rather have him here than an owner who's only ambition, is to sell the club in a couple of years time. If he does stay and we get promoted, he clearly will need to back Cook, and from what he said in his statement last week, he suggests he will do. Tho how much, depends I'd guess, on which division we are in. And whether we apply for the pl bail out or not. As if in lge1 and we get that bailout, we can only spend up to £20,000 on transfer fees over the 2 windows. Which is why he said we may not even apply for that money. Guess we just have to wait and see whether this is just a snag with the efl, andxnaybe it will still happen. Very few takeovers seem to go through without stalling.

Cook had offers to manage in the Championship and turned them down and I cant imagine he would have taken the job unless he had some kind of assurances or promises of what the future plan is

So he says he's going to invest... 😂😂 Even after all these years there's still people believing what Evans says. It's quite incredible...

Was really hoping the takeover took place , if we manage promotion this season , without huge player investment , ( which will not happen ) its relegation the following season , then it's a downhill spiral from there , our only hope was the takeover

This is how business- and other relationships- are done. In any proposition, there is a moment when one or the other party walks away to check the genuine level of interest of the other party. This is merely a step in the process.

Ha ha ha. Many of us were ahead of the game. We knew that a take-over was very unlikely because Evans just can,t let go. He is clinging on to this club despite the majority of supporters who despise his abysmal leadership. Little wonder he remains anonymous. Evans is hanging on for another pay day if promotion is achieved .

A lot of people here are constantly moaning about Evans lack of investment in the club when the real problem has been poor quality investment from poor quality managers. There has been no attempt to create a balanced squad just a large one. hopefully Paul Cook will rectify this issue by downsizing and increasing the quality of the currant team. For too long we have been the nice Ipswich retirement village and have been far too easily conned by more than a few players.

Europablue... great posts especially (22:18).

Like everyone(mostly), i cannot see any on the pitch or off the pitch improvements in the last 14 years, its been a steady decline, all true! Now i will tell you another thing that is true; i wanted MM out with a passion and i am glad he left, his time to go had come! But not for one second did i think things could get any worse, but they did didnt they! And in that same vein, things could get worse if we sell to the wrong people!

I would welcome a new owner, but it has to be the right one, not just anyone as some on here would have and indeed jump at!

This falling through could certainly be a blessing!

there are several things that make up a successful club, good owners and good supporters being just 2 of the ingredients. There self proclaimed super supporters on here who have plenty to say about lack of investment from Evans, yet ironically never go to games or put a penny into the club! I wonder if the super supporters realise that investment from the fans is crucial to a clubs survival, a club is nothing without supporters who invest in the club, however small and whatever budget will allow. So these super supporters( self proclaimed) who could afford to put a little into the club, but dont and criticise Evans, demanding he spends more, i have given you a new title, you are "followers" of ITFC. I know many Norwich supporters who follow the fortunes of ITFC.

Dog you sound like a child in the playground. I never said you were a Norwich fan, I said your view is the same as most Norwich fans. As we are a joke, most Norwich fans want things at PR to stay as they are as much as possible, including Evans remaining. Its pretty much basic common sense. And you want the same as them. That's fine, just own it
