Norwood and Vincent-Young Back in Squad for AFC Wimbledon Trip
Monday, 12th Apr 2021 10:59

James Norwood and Kane Vincent-Young are back in the squad for Tuesday’s trip to AFC Wimbledon, manager Paul Cook revealed at this morning’s press conference.

Norwood has been out since the Bristol Rovers game with a thigh problem and Vincent-Young having made his first start in 17 months at Wigan the previous week.

Their return to the fold is further good new for Cook with key midfielder Flynn Downes having come into the team on Saturday, also following a hamstring problem, while Tristan Nydam came off the bench to make his first appearance in precisely two years after breaking his fibula and rupturing ankle ligaments in pre-season ahead of 2019/20.

“We’ve got 24 training this morning, including the two guys you’ve just mentioned,” Cook said when asked about Norwood and Vincent-Young.

“On Flynn, I think Flynn’s a massive tick for the football club. For anyone who watches football, young players today, I think Flynn Downes has got a very, very bright future in the game.

“He’s a really good young man, conducts himself very, very well, he’s got a desire to be better and to win games and be successful. As a manager, it was great to see complete the 90 minutes on Saturday.

“Turning to the other guys you mentioned, I’m not going to debate players for long spells, I know that’s what you’d like but they’re back in the squad.

“We’re going to Wimbledon tomorrow night hoping that we can keep our season going and we can give our supporters belief that we can do it.”

Pressed further on the boost Norwood and Vincent-Young will give to his squad in the final seven matches of the season, Cook added: “You know yourself, I want to be very careful this morning, especially what I say about the players because I know fans today and everyone else, people want managers to come and be brash and say things that people want to hear.

“For me as a club, and the club’s obviously changed ownership, the performances that I watch are way off performances that I like as a manager.

“I don’t want to debate too much with you about good, bad and sidewards. We are in my opinion, a team that’s got a lot of work to do, shall we say.”

Cook is clearly a fan of Nydam, who caught the eye after such a lengthy spell out during the final half our on Saturday.

“Tristan, I’ve watched the last two U23 games and one of the criticisms of the team as a team is that, again I’m going to speak carefully, we don’t have enough contact, we’re nice,” he reflected.

“[We need to] have players in the team who have contact and win the ball back and break up play, then you’re supposed to supply flair players with the ball to go and create chances and score.

“As you can see with us at the minute, we’re just very much a work in progress. Tristan’s got great qualities, as a lad he’s got a heart as big as a lion, he’s got a great desire to win games, to compete, and that’s something in a lot of games we lack.”

It would be great to see Nydam grab his opportunities in the team now. He clearly has qualities we need but it's a big ask having been out for 2 years or so.

Pleased to hear PC praising Nydam. Just hope that it translates into a decent new contract for him. I also detect PC's dissatisfaction/frustration with others. Lets hope for 3 points with us having played two up front and posing a much greater threat...... coyb

Downes, KVY and Norwood on he pitch together? Blimey. I think we might even score this time!

good to see Norwood is back as he is our only hope of a shot on goal, but bet he dosnt stay fit to see remainder of games out, which is why he needs to be one moved on in summer. No good having even the best striker in the league if he is never fit,we need goals its been our downfall since Paul Hurst's fateful appointment .

It is clear that PC knows we have big problems on the pitch. Because of this I will be fully behind him, and wait to see what team he builds in the summer. Players to stay: KVY, Norwood, Downes, Nydam, Bishop, Woolf, Nsalia, McGavin, Dobra. What we need: proven goalscorers, aggressive midfield player who can win the ball back, imposing midfield players who can create and chip in with goals.

Downs to be our next captain !

I think if we play Downes and Nydam we win more of the midfield battle and Dozzell can play further forward and do less of that ineffective shirt-pulling and kamikaze passing infront of the back line. KVY and Edwards pushing on to provide width. Dobra and Judge swapping position at will to support Norwood up front. Can also switch to a 442 with Dobra playing off Norwood if needed. But needs to play direct and fast (on the ground and in the air) And Downes and Nydam in their midfields faces every time Dons have the ball.

PC is honest ,driven but equally sensible and discrete enough to articulate clearly the boundaries of matters he can or will open up on in present ,or any circumstances !
No doubt he sees with great clarity the footballing inadequacies , the character deficiencies and the technical fault lines — as well as the individual capacity and ability ! He will be aligning his assessments for blunt ,forthright discussion in private with the new Management team and incoming CEO ; hopefully personal strengths , professional abilities and character will form the basis for many new foundations for change and improvement at ITFC .
Support with true belief !

I know this will not be popular but I would put Skuse in for Dozzell for the remaining games. He may not have flair but he tackles cleanly and breaks play up. Dozzell has a similar strike rate to Skuse so we are not replacing a goal scorer. No mention of Mathewson again.

Bert - On a couple of occasions on Saturday Dozza picked the ball up and ran past his opponent. It created space and got us in on their back four. But these instances are so few and far between. As a player I really want to like Doz....he has a good range of passing ......but that isnt enough. Its about contributing to the team. As a midfielder you should either be reading the game, breaking play up and providing cover to the back line (as Downes does so effectively) or driving forward, getting in the box and creating chances(scoring a few on the way)..............Doz isnt doing either this season.

Don't blink or they'll be back in the physio's...

Dozzell has a problem now. If he is not seen as our CDM and cannot score goals and be a CAM, then love him or loathe him, he just does not fit/work. That would be a shame as there is a clearly a player in there, but one who has seemingly accepted that mediocrity is enough to sustain a career (at ITFC), as the one criticism I do have is his lack of hunger on the pitch. There were flashes on Saturday, but nothing more, and certainly no goal threat unfortunately.

While I suspect that PC can see Dozza's potential, I also suspect that he sees him as something of a luxury. I think that Dozza needs to work hard over the summer to improve his strength and bulk and to work on his tackling. In short he needs to improve his all round game beyond just his ability to pick a pass. I hope that he is here next season but is given a strengthening and an appropriate muscle building programme over summer in the hope that he will come back bigger and stronger and better able to compete with the more aggressive opponents.
