Town Confirm Penney Signing
Tuesday, 29th Jun 2021 14:02

Town have confirmed the signing of former Sheffield Wednesday left-back or midfielder Matt Penney on a two-year deal with the club having an option for a further season.

The 23-year-old was released by the Owls at the end of last season and will join the Blues on a free transfer on July 1st.

“After meeting the manager, I knew that this was the right place to kick on with my career,” Penney told iFollow Ipswich.

“The club is definitely going in the right direction and I want to be part of that. My main aim is to help Ipswich get back to the Championship and I will give it my absolute best to try and make that happen.”

Boss Paul Cook added: “Matt has a lot of qualities and is at an age where his whole career is in front of him.

“I can tell he has a real appetite and he should be a great addition to the squad. The size of this club won't faze him and he can grow here.”

Chesterfield-born Penney made 10 starts and five sub appearances for the Owls during 2020/21 having been at the club since he was eight years old, although having spent time on loan at Bradford in 2016/17, Mansfield in 2017/18 and in Germany with St Pauli in 2019/20.

In total, he made 22 starts and 10 sub appearances for the Owls without scoring.

A good signing, right age, championship experience.
Of course Monkey blue we can't be certain it will be successful - for that we would need a much larger budget and players who are proven at championship being willing to come down to division 1. How likely is that?

Glad to have him here. Been a bit of a problem position for us since Tyrone left, so hopefully he will be a success. Would have liked him to look happier about it.

Im with Monkey Blue's sentiments with some balance in our reaction to players we know so little about.
HOWEVER, I would say that I too am caught up in a surge of optimism about what is going on presently, and I believe PC has a good eye for a player, his past record with other clubs is good, ignore what happened here last season at the end, those were not his players and few showed any desire for OUR club.
In terms of the lower question about why did they let him go, well we know what happens to cash strapped clubs with salary caps and players on good money, especially after being caught once on financial irregularities, it tends to have more to do with how many they can shift out rather than who they all are.
So Im going to stay on my wave of optimism until someone proves its unfounded. For now, its all going the way we were promised.

The most important thing is simply to wish him a warm welcome to the club and every success here as most posters have here. Looking at his attributes is normal too so we can be excited at a new signing without expecting another Mings. My remarks mainly directed at MonkeyBlue but in a non-argumentative way.

Well tellitasitis thats just a teaser!. However I dont blame you. Id heard about Lanks' departure in advance and it isnt right to share information just because you have it.
But I am intrigued, Bale said his decision would cause a stir didn't he, and Wilshire is without a club, but id settle for Brooks if its him :)

Penney looks like a job in progress and could do well. Kenlock does not deserve so much negativity. Irrespective of his ability - and he's had plenty of decent games, including some in the Championship, as well as some more dodgy ones - he has always put in the effort and done his best. He has played second fiddle to a number of other players throughout his Town career without, as far as I know, complaining. He could be a useful addition to a "smaller" L1 or L2 club if Cook does decide to move him on.

Wow! they're all coming in now OR leaving, wish Matt all the best - one thing for sure Mr Cook has got a lot of managing to do this season, if he gets us up with so many changes to the playing personnel it will be one hell of a job done.

Steve, totalling in agreement re Kenlock, IFollow meant i watched more games last season than for many years, and I thought Kenlock worked hard, has lots of promise and may yet develop into a fine player. Personally he is one I would keep even if he destined to play second fiddle again. Im not sure of his age, but his best years are ahead of him for sure

Whilst Monkey_Blue (and one or two others) is fully entitled to his own opinion, his glass seems always half empty.

Why the &^%$ doesn't he and a few others posting here just cheer the *%^£ up a bit?

Geeeeeeeeeeeeezuz!

Some people really know how to bring the mood down, even before a ball has been kicked in anger, on what should be an exciting time to be a Town fan after suffering 14 seasons of stale mediocrity.

As I've said before, we should ALL be getting fully behind the team, sending out as many positive vibes as we possibly can to help the new boys integrate and show them that we're happy they've become a part of our great club.

We may not get promoted at the end of this coming season, as the rebuild and restructuring of the club is an ongoing process and might need more than one solitary season to bear real fruit, but it appears that the new owners and management team are fully committed to get it right, however long it takes.

"Negative Nellies" posting their doom-mongering tripe prior to the new season starting do absolutely NOTHING for the morale of the team.

Worst case scenario... IF it all turns out to be a huge failure and we flop worse than we have under the previous regime, IF the owners renege on their promises of investment or sell prized assets for peanuts and replace them with dross and IF we end up watching even worse performances than we have for the past several years, ending with relegation into League Two, THEN I'll agree with you.

Until such time, for Gods sake LIGHTEN UP!

Onwards and upwards,

COYB

BeattiesBackPocket - i still think Sam Parkin is the worst striker i have seen in a Town Shirt, followed very closely by Aaron Maclean.

KernewekBlue - Totally agree. I think this is the most optimistic time to be a Town fan in many many years.

No one knows how good any of the new signings will be individually but more importantly how well they will gel as a team but please let's try to be positive for goodness sake.

Dog. You should have seen David Johnson here in his second season in the 70's before we "unloaded" him to Liverpool where he was great. Boxing day before the game, the guys kicked balls into the stands as xmas gifts, he hit his over churchmans and never to be seen again. I think that was around 76/77

Bazaa…..I loved David Johnson Mk.1. My 2 most memorable recollections of him were the dreadful injury suffered below the belt and the horrendous price tags on the goods for sale in his boutique.
