Town Complete Burgess Signing
Sunday, 15th Aug 2021 15:46

Town have completed the signing of Accrington Stanley centre-half Cameron Burgess.

Burgess, 25, who is the Blues’ 15th addition of the summer, has penned a three-year deal with an option for a further season for a fee understood to be £750,000.

“I am so pleased to be here,” Burgess told iFollow Ipswich. “This is a really good step up for me so I’m just looking forward to working hard and getting started.

“This is a talented squad and I am excited to work with the group. I will work hard, roll my sleeves up and get stuck in.

“I saw there were more than 20,000 fans at Portman Road for the first game of the season, so I cannot wait to experience that myself.”

Quizzed on what he will bring to the side, he added: “Hopefully a bit of leadership, communication and organising.

“It’s a talented group of lads, there’s no denying that, so hopefully I can help drive the standards; work hard, roll our sleeves up and try and put in some good performances.

“I'm delighted. It's such an honour to be at such a massive club. Yesterday [Friday], I was preparing for a different game and now I’m stood here so it’s a bit of surprise but I’m buzzing to be here.

“It ended up happening quicker than what I thought it would which is a good thing.

“I don’t think anyone could turn it down in my position and many other positions as well. It’s a bit of a dream come true to progress, be at such a massive club and hopefully be part of some good things.”

Burgess says Town's home ground already had a special place in his career: “I have a bit of affinity with the place already, I made my professional debut at Portman Road. I think it was when we got relegated to the Championship with Fulham

“It was a [Saturday] night on Sky [on the opening day of 2014/15 which the Blues won 2-1]. I played as a defensive midfielder that night which was a bit of a strange one for me. It was an unbelievable experience and I can’t wait to experience it more.”

Town boss Paul Cook added: “Cameron brings great balance and experience to the team.

“He’s another player at a really good age and it makes competition in the backline really strong.

“Again I want to thank the owners and Mark Ashton [CEO] for helping us get this sorted.”

Aberdeen-born Burgess, who can also play at left-back, was a youth player with Celtic, ECU Joondalup in Perth Australia and Fulham before breaking into the Cottagers side for that August 2014 game against Town.

While a Fulham player, 6ft 4in tall Burgess spent time on loan at Ross County, Cheltenham. Oldham and Bury before joining Scunthorpe in 2017.

A spell on loan at Salford followed before he moved on to Accrington in August 2020.

Having won caps at U18 and U19 levels with Scotland, he switched his international allegiance to Australia and has played for their U20s and U23s, his family having emigrated to Perth, Western Australia when he was 11 during his father Stuart's playing career.

I agree with previous comments ref KVY. Give Burns a go at R/B and put Fraser r/m with Chaplin in middle & Edwards L/m, Would make a formidable midfield imo. Cant wait for Tuesday night. COYB

Bit worried that he says he's been playing through the pain barrier anyone know what this mystery injury is. KVY has been a pale shadow of himself since coming back from injury might be time to move Wes Burns to full back where he looks a better attacking threat coming from a deeper position. Wolfenden lacks the maturity and mental toughness to make a good central defender. Not sure about Penney at full back his first touch and positional sense look a bit suspect but it's early days.

Lots of opinions here! Looking forward to seeing this lad to bring some composure into the defence for sure, and offering the James Wilson style solidity. I believe in Woolfenden and have done since the first moment I saw him play. He can thrive alongside someone solid. Like John Stones alongside Ruben Dias (don't worry I'm not comparing them, but you get the idea!). Why all this criticism of KVY as well? I thought he was the best player besides Evan/Harper against Morecombe. Let's give these guys time to play together, and when teams like Burton try to rough us up, let's hope this Burgess lad sorts 'em out good and proper!

Maybe this is our new captain as well, last year in team of the year so got all the right credentials.

All good teams play off a solid spine, starting at the back: hope he can join the pantheon of great Town centre halves.... in time.

think we are looking a helluva lot better and need to start punishing opposition. Noticed Crooks has hit the ground running at Boro. We missed out there I reckon. Don't blame Rotherham for not letting him come here! We could do with a similar signing, as not sure we have made a Wow transfer yet. Although not winging

Good age and decent pedigree. Let's see if he can make the step-up as the £750k paid is quite a hefty fee.

As always it's up to the brave few who are happy to face the keyboard warriors and point out this looks over priced and if so important why wasn't he bought in during pre-season ? I back Wolfy to shake off his loss of form but definitely good to see competition for places. Not a Norwich fan but not a lemming either

Mariner1974 against Morecambe did you actually see KVY go passed an opponent? A lot of his passing was to an opponent not a teammate, similar to yesterday. He is a fan's favourite but he is not above criticism.

Before KVY got injured he was head and shoulders above anybody else in our squad some people on here have very short memories or are just serial moaners. Needs to be given time or perhaps a short spell in the u23s or a loan for a short time. Not one of the back four has looked convincing and this has adverse effects on the rest of the team.

Yet more posts on here that show how fickle some fans can be. Been crying out for kvy to be fit and back in the team. He has 1 poor game and they want him dropped. As for woolfy? Similar. Everyone been saying the past couple of years he should be 1st choice, now hes rubbish. Totally agree hes not had a great start ot the season and maybe yes, he should drop out on tuesday. But with a more vocal and commanding cb beside him may help his game and his confidence no end. So let's not vilify him. Honestly some fans are simply not happy unless they have certain players to slate. Let's remember guys, they all wear the blue shirt, and they dont make mistakes on purpose.

With Burgess in and a fit Edmundson our defence will be much improved. I do think however that our attacking play will improve greatly over the coming weeks which will ease the pressure on the back 4.

Some people make a player their undropable favourite and KVY is one such player, he showed a lot of promise when he came to Town , then got his injury. Then for most of the season people were saying we will be ok ,we will get promoted when KVY is back, he made a brief return and suffered setback, i got hammered with down votes when i said imo KVY wont be the same player when he does come back, yet here we are , its unfortunate, but he is not the player people expected him to be, time will tell if he ever is , .

I suggested on the forum at the end of July that CB would be a great addition at CB for us. Finally called one right!

Amazed that people are claiming knowledge of a player I've never seen mentioned on here. Let's hope he doesn't well. Have no particular issues with any of the signings and some are exciting. My issues are with the strategy of bringing in so many players, a significant percentage of which if history shows will not work out, the conduct and performance of the manager and trusting “owners” who don't own the club and aren't spending their money and don't control the club, it's a bunch of suits in America who don't know or care where Ipswich is. I'll be called negative for this…. If you can't argue what I've said is factual, then it's the facts that are negative, not me.

Welcome Cameron, I really hope your the man to sort our defence out and be a strong leader that we are missing

I hope he is a defender who can reach the half way line when clearing the ball rather than our 5 yard header c/halfs that we have at the moment.

Grumpyoldman....My Dad can sometimes be a grumpy old man as well, but he saw KVY play for the first time against Morecambe, and said during the game and at the end, that he was our best outlet, and can see alot of our play going through him. Yes he's getting on (my dad that is), but an unbiassed view on a player that he has no past association with. We're two league games in. New team that needs time to gel. Let's give them all a chance and try not to destroy those we have/had faith in.

Well said Blues1.

Fans on here seem to need a scapegoat every season, 3 games in it looks to be Woolfenden. Yes he has made some mistakes, but he hasn't become a bad player overnight. Against Morecombe, did you notice the pass from Penney that put him under pressure, that led to the second goal? Win as a team, lose as a team.
