Barnsley Striker Woodrow on Town's List of Potential Recruits
Tuesday, 24th May 2022 16:07

TWTD understands Barnsley’s Cauley Woodrow is among the strikers on Town’s list of potential summer recruits.

Adding firepower to the squad is high on the Blues' priorities during the close season with Kieran McKenna’s side having been unable to turn dominant displays into goals on a number of occasions during 2021/22.

Earlier this month, TWTD revealed that Leicester’s George Hirst is one of the frontmen under consideration and we understand 27-year-old Woodrow is another.

Born in Hemel Hempstead, Woodrow was with Tottenham and Luton as a youngster before joining Fulham and made his first senior appearances while on loan at Southend United in September 2013.

Further loan spells at Burton Albion, Bristol City - during Town CEO Mark Ashton’s time with the Robins - and Barnsley followed before the six-foot tall frontman joined the Tykes on a permanent basis in January 2019.

Capped by England at U17, U20 and U21 levels, Woodrow has made 147 starts and 10 sub appearances during his loan and permanent stints with Barnsley, scoring 53 times.

The 27-year-old netted four times in 26 starts and three sub appearances during 2021/22 with an ankle injury which required surgery sidelining him for four months from December.

In the Tykes' 2020/21 season, in which they reached the Championship play-off semi-finals, he scored 15 times in 48 starts and two sub appearances.

Woodrow, who was previously understood to be a Town target in January 2017, has another year left on his Oakwell contract and hasn’t ruled out staying with the Tykes despite their relegation from the Championship. However, Barnsley may be forced to sell players this summer after making a loss of around £7-8 million.

Town are likely to be on the lookout for at least a couple of central strikers with James Norwood having been released and Macauley Bonne having returned to QPR at the end of his loan, although with a return for the Chantry-raised frontman not out of the question.

Kayden Jackson signed a new deal last week, while Joe Pigott is in contract but appears likely to be among those the Blues look to move on in the summer. Youngster Tyreece Simpson has told the club he wants to leave.

Agree with Dissboy - we won't hear about signings until they have happened - it's the way Ashton likes to do business so all these players we are linked with are red herrings

How about Andy Carroll released by West Brom, only 33, worth a punt, what do you think?

Arniem. What are you on about? No, it's not my opinion. How is this story anything to do with being Ashtons choice? It's a rumour on a social media site. And no, he doesn't decide who we try to sign. Was made very clear how things work under this new regime. The manager decides who he wants, Ashton tries to do the deal. Just as it should be. The fact you hsve to report to insults shows ur mentality. Apparently I'm not allowed to challenge someone else's opinions by stating my own. At least, according to you. And thats from some1 I actually thought was one of the more balanced posters on here. Clearly I was wrong about that.

Blues1; KMK has admitted that he had no involvement in recruitment when he was at Manchester United. Given that, and the importance of recruitment to a successful football club, it is likely that the process will be much more collegiate than him simply giving Ashton a shopping list.

Would sign him if fully fit but would have to undergo a strenuous fitness test. Has proved he can play at championship level.

I really dislike this limbo time when the season ends and we wait for the transfer window to open. Speculation is rife and social media goes into overdrive. OK everyone has an opinion and every opinion is valid especially because we want the best for our club. But press, social media are plucking names out of the air and agents are pushing their players forward using these and other means of getting them noticed. Ipswich now have a backroom team who will have already earmarked who they would like to fill the gaps and KMK will have given his approved list to Ashton so I think we will have some surprises when the market opens. Lets forget about all this speculation, there's some good things happening behind the scenes.

unlikely that the club would be announcing who they are interested in or targeting, it wouldnt be in their interest. Its always the same this time of year.

I have been saying get Scott Twine for months-----OK will cost a lot but so did Kevin Wilson at the time and Marcus Stewart and they did not let us down-------also Matt Smith out of contract at Rotherham-------Alan Lee did not do too bad when we signed him from there!!

We bought Chaplin who was surplus as Barnsley and he's done well in relation to taking chances in front of goal. This lad has has injury problems and will again be surplus to requirements at the club. Morris is their best striker by far but not an out and out goalscorer which is what we need. I'm sure KMK has irons in the fire and the press will become aware once the deal is completed. This is likely to be speculation.
I have faith KMK will deliver a proper finisher who will get us goals.

I never said Scott Twine was a striker I said he'd score a hatful of goals … I also said he'd cost a fortune ( which he would ) but he'd be a great asset to to the squad ….. by the way old blue … love your ambition !!!

I have a feeling - a few running away with themselves may be a tad disappointed come August … !!!
Let's hope not …. !!!

This one doesn't inspire me. As a team that dominates matches, oppositions will typically sit back and defend in numbers. Our strikers aren't going to have space or time in the box so we need strikers who are savvy in the box, can make space, draw a foul, take their chances when they come.
