Ashton: A Bit of a Time Delay at This Period of the Summer
Saturday, 9th Jul 2022 16:15

Town CEO Mark Ashton says there can be “a time delay” in completing transfers in this period of the close season.

So far the Blues have added four players to their squad, free transfers Freddie Ladapo, Dominic Ball and Greg Leigh, as well as Tyreece John-Jules, who joined on a season-long loan from Arsenal.

In addition, new contracts have been signed by Luke Woolfenden, Wes Burns, Kayden Jackson and Elkan Baggott, which Ashton, speaking in an interview with BBC Radio Suffolk’s Life’s a Pitch (3hrs 24mins 59secs), says was important.

“The first thing you have to do is your housekeeping,” he said. “You’ve got to get your own house in order, and I think we’ve done that with the new contracts we’ve offered to some of our existing players. It was important that we got those players locked down early.

“We’ve brought some in and I expect there to be some more coming in before the end of the window.

“I think the frustrating thing at the moment is that we’re in this period now where free transfers have gone, Premier League clubs are now back in training, Premier League managers are settling their squads down and whilst you have discussions with clubs about transfers of other players, Premier League clubs have got pre-season tours to fulfil and sometimes they want numbers around for training and technical camps so there’s a bit of almost a time delay in being able to conclude some of these deals.

“But I promise you we are still active in the market and I fully expect some more to come in.”

TWTD reported earlier in the week that the Blues had made a £1 million offer to Leeds for left-back Leif Davis, who will be part of their squad which travels to Australia tomorrow, while Town are understood to have had a bid turned down by Leicester City for striker George Hirst, who is also interesting Championship clubs.

On Thursday, former Town midfielder Flynn Downes completed a move from Swansea to West Ham, providing the Blues with a welcome summer windfall.

The Blues are due 20 per cent of the profit the Swans made on what they paid Town for the 23-year-old last summer. That fee is believed to have been £1.4 million, although further clauses may have been triggered, while the Hammers are understood to have paid an initial £9 million with that deal reportedly potentially worth up to £14 million.

Quizzed on how much Town are set to receive as their share of Downes’s move to his local club, Ashton kept his cards close to his chest.

“I can’t tell you how much because I’ll be in a world of trouble because it’s a contractual obligation,” he said.

“One of the things that we are quite effective at is how we trade players. [chief operating officer] Luke Werhun plays a big part in this.

“We took a good fee at the time for Flynn. I’m not going to divulge it, I wish he’d stayed [but he needed to move].

“We took the money on the guaranteed [fee], we took money on additional games and then we protected ourselves with a chunky sell-on.

“We’ve now had confirmation of what that deal looks like so we know how much we’re getting on that.

“And if you were to put all that together as a valuation of a player who has moved from a League One club, if you look at the value of players that have been sold by League One clubs, it’s a very different value to what a Championship player moves for.

“So, if you put what we got initially for the player and what we got from the sell-on, it’s a very healthy transfer fee for a League One player.”

Also among the guests on today's show was former Blues keeper-coach Malcolm Webster (3hr 10mins 48secs).

Suggest go for Anthony Scully (Lincoln city,Age 24)
15 goals and 7 assists in 39 appearances last season,2020/21 season, 17 goals in 54 appearances and Cole Stockton (Morecambe,Age 28)still remember him last season how to destroyed our defences in the first game ,both will be very good addition for us.

clocks ticking, will be interesting to see how it pans out, we are now in good hands imo, so not panicking, but really feel there is need for a quality striker, above all.

I would really love to see a set piece specialist come in to address our lack of goals from set pieces. I'm hoping this is an area we are working on in the close season.

Kuyski. Let's leave this Cole stockton rubbish aside shall we.? Yes, he had a decent season last time round but hes had 11 clubs in 12 years. What does that tell you? No player moves that many times if he's a good player.

I hope we can get of good experienced heads in before our first league game but I fear it will be the usual last minute scramble. That's no fault of Mark Ashton but it is frustrating.

PV -KM was and is so aware of this deficiency so we must all hope it's being addressed within the squad ,in training and coaching ,but as we move on into the transfer scheme !
It may be off season but how pleasing to see ITFC businesslike , professional , organised and pro- active !
Imagine the players are likely to be much much better prepared than for a decade or so ,if KM has put the same level of thought and planning into the pre-season as appears .

I am confident we will make some strong moves. Hope we are also prepared to sell players who do not fit from last summer as we do not need a bloated squad.

Caveman. We already have good experienced players here. So it's not essential that anyone else we sign is experienced. As long as they're good players, thsts all we need.

Did Aston just quote “all free transfer have gone”…. No they haven't at all.. there's still plenty of decent free players out there at the moment. Derby have signed a few just this week!

Amongst Derby's signings was McGoldrick, enough said!

We still need a creative/attacking midfielder, a second left wing back and ideally another striker. Celina, Davis and Hurst would be lovely and would complete a very strong squad.

Dissboyitfc… also amongst those signings were Conor hourihane, Tom Barkhuizan, James Chester and Nathaniel Mendez Laing who are all good signings for this level and they were all free! And there's plenty more out there.. so not to sure where ashtons getting his info from!

Blue81. The inky one if those whos really a good signing is hourihane. The rest are just old players available for free, which is all derby can sign. And if u bothered to read into what Ashton is actually saying , is thst WE aren't looking for anymore free transfers. Why do some fans on here take everything so literally.

Blues1. Oh, don't get me wrong, I'm ot saying they aren't decent players but majority past their best id think. Dont know if them selling Lawrence will mea they can actually buy some1 now tho. Depends what the restrictions are that they still have.

Quality not quantity. The big clue here “premier league clubs have overseas tours”.

he's aiming high and if we have to wait to land a couple of PL players, it will be worth it. Look at what's happening with Ronaldo at MU, there's a ton of time to get it sorted, and to get the right ones they don't all have to be here way before the Bolton game

I though Cole Stockton is a late bloomer,so many wonderful goals in last season!Don't forgot morecambe was fight for survive whole season!Check his goals first before you call him rubbish!

We do not need Stockton-hes really not a particularly good footballer and certainly no better than what we have. We play a system that is a nightmare for a striker and his goals would soon dry up. We made him look like Messi last season. Derby have acquired some excellent players- experienced and talented as opposed to past it or over the hill. If we finish above them we'll be automatically promoted. If we don't get Celina it will be scandalous on the part of the club. Angry beyond belief if we're making no effort for a guy obviously too good for this level and who loves it here.

Kuyski. One season where he's scored loads of goals. Yes, in a struggling team. Just as piggott did the year before for Wimbledon. And I repeat, 11 clubs in 12 years. Speaks for itself.

Chepstowblue. What? Yes, celinas a good player, but apart from the fact he is inconsistent to say the least, the fact is we're likely not in a position to sign him. He's in £21,500 a week at dijon. Do u really think he's gonna drop to around 5 or 6k a week to come here? Plus, what would his transfer fee be? Yes, we could afford it but are we really gonna be paying a fee of say £3-5m for a player while we're in lge1? Some fans need to get real. Maybe we could get him on a loan, but ot sure dijon would be interested in that. Not sure we need him anyway, have players already here who could fill that role.

We are at the time now where no club or agent is going to agree a move until they're sure that all interest in the player has been received. They will also delay and sing the praises of the player to try and bump the price up. Naming the player in a touring squad is one way of trying to pressure the potential buyer into a quick move. It's all cat and mouse and for some it will back fire. I believe though that ITFC will not be hood winked into paying too much or into panic buying. We need to get out of league 1 but I believe that any substantial purchases will be made in January IF it seems likely at that time that we can move up a league. Remember that our owners are investors and the higher the chances of success become the more they will invest.
