Millwall Friendly Hit By Rail Strike
Wednesday, 20th Jul 2022 12:10

Town fans travelling to Millwall face disruption on the railways due to a strike.

Greater Anglia say there will be no services between Cambridge or Bishop’s Stortford and Liverpool Street or on any regional or branch line.

There will be only one train an hour on the Norwich to London line with the first and last trains from Norwich at 08.00 and 19.00, and from Liverpool Street at 10.30 and 21.30.

Similarly, there will be one train an hour on the Colchester-London Liverpool Street service with the first and last from Colchester at 08.13 and 20.13 and from Liverpool Street at 10.00 and 22.00.

Nearly 40 tickets remain, the Blues having sold 420 up to now with a further allocation available on the day. Prices are £11.50 for adults, £8.50 for seniors (64-plus and under-22) and £6.50 for under-18s.

There will also be strike action on the day of Town’s opening League One fixture against Bolton Wanderers, Saturday 30th July.

Whilst I consider myself to be politically left of centre, this strike really p1sses me off. Train drivers are well paid, and other public sector key workers on the NHS, police, armed forces etc cannot strike. It was announced yesterday that NHS staff Luke me will get "up to" 5% - thus a long long way below CPI. And We're the ones who worked all those extra hundreds of hours for nought during COVID wave 1. The Aslef strike is the sort of thing that could make me consider voting Tory. Bastards.

Also strike on 30th July - first game of the Season at Portman Rd - will be difficult for some who rely on the train - hundreds if not thousands travel to Ipswich on trains on matchdays - will certainly take some of the fun out of it.

Legendofthepheonix these strikes are not all about pay, from a maintenance stand point its more about job security and protecting conditions of current contracts I.e amounts of nights and weekends to be worked, enhancements for nights and weekends. The proposed changes would mean more work for less money if you are lucky enough to keep your job after the cuts. They are also trying to change pensions which people have paid into for years, there's more to it than what the media puts out.

Legendofhtephoenix "consider voting Tory" give your head a wobble. It is the Tories that are destroying the NHS and the UK.

The rail strike may mean some people aren't able to travel, but I'm surprised that so few tickets were sold for a London game, albeit a friendly, before the strike was announced. I've got two tickets, so will be there as I don't think South Eastern Train are striking.

Only way I'd ever vote Tory again is if Mark Ashton or McKenna ran for Prime Minister hahaha

Not to wade in on the political arguments taking place but too many people are hating the player and not the game. Everyone deserves more, they just can't and don't get to fight for it.

keighley - I only said "consider" - I could never bring myself to actually do it. And forevertown - we in the NHS have had our pensions messed about and downgraded twice. And our payscales messed about countless times. But after 39 years of work, I've never been on strike. ASLEF are militant, greedy bar stewards. If they wanted public support, they should make their case publicly, explain themselves and negotiate, as other key workers do. They don't, they down tools, and disrupt millions of people who might otherwise have had some sympathy. I have zero sympathy for them so bring it on, let them strike and I hope the government don't budge.

Please delete all those making idiotic right wing political comments on a post which is about ITFC fans' difficulties. Next thing we'll be seeing posts calling for the boycotting of games against clubs who have broad inclusion policies.

Oh, so to, make your point publicly, explain yourself and negotiate is an idiotic right wing political comment is it? Thanks for the explanation.

And these comments go some way to explaining why this country is a mess!

Legendofthephoenix

- considers self to be left wing
- works for the NHS, a public service which is on the brink of collapse after years of Tory mismanagement
- is frustrated by rail strikes which Tories have failed to negotiate effectively
- is now considering voting Tory due to the aforementioned strikes

The mind boggles

The rail union boss earns over £160,000 a year. And you thought footballers earnt too much.

And of course, he still gets paid when the workers go on strike.

A band 6 nurse gets £28,000. A ticket collector gets £33,000 - both average salaries.

Pay the Nhs a decent wage (all goverments have failed since mid seventies) and let the railworkers strike. Less people use the railway, so they will screw themselves like british leyland.
