Penney Joins Motherwell on Loan
Thursday, 25th Aug 2022 18:41

Town left-back Matt Penney has joined Scottish Premiership Motherwell on loan until January.

The 24-year-old hasn’t featured for the Blues this season with Leif Davis and Greg Leigh having been signed in the summer, although was an unused sub for the Carabao Cup tie against Colchester, and his departure before next Thursday's deadline had been expected.

“We had a number of options available to us but we wanted to wait for Matt and are absolutely delighted to have him with us,” Motherwell manager Steven Hammell told his club’s official website.

“When Jake Carroll broke down in training and it was confirmed he was going to miss a significant portion of the season, and with Nathan McGinley still recovering from his operation, we knew we were going to have to bring someone in.

“Stephen O’Donnell has performed well out of position, so we now have real competition and cover on the side of the pitch.”

Penney, who joined the Blues on a two-year deal with the club having an option for a further season after leaving Sheffield Wednesday last summer, has made 21 starts and five sub appearances for Town, scoring once.

The left-back's departure means Town now have 18 players who qualify for the 22-man squad they are required to submit to the EFL following the closure of the transfer window.

That number includes all players other than those aged under-21 and goalkeepers.

Elsewhere, former Blues central defender Matt Clarke, 25, has joined Middlesbrough from Brighton, signing a three-year deal.

A decent little player and we wish him well. It's clear that recruitment this year has taken this squad to another level. Squad tidying gaining pace in readiness for some additional quality incoming!

Has performed ok under McKenna without setting the world alight. But with the championship possibly on the Horizon we needed to raise the bar. I didn't realise he was only 24 so still got time to improve in the game especially if he gets an extended run in the Motherwell team. Seems a decent character so i hope he does well in the future.

No surprise and at the age of 24 he needs to play football. This is a good move for him. Hope it works out.

KM is getting rid of the bang average squad members. Another one who will never play for a town again.

Good crosser of the ball but sadly lightweight defensively.

Hope he does well north of the border but some of our outgoing loan players have not always faired well in Scotland.

We are clearing the decks before bringing in a few quality players next week. Simpson will be gone next.

Good luck to Matt

In a 4 as a defensive LB he might have been a good as anyone at the Club but we simply don't play like that, so wish the lad well and we move on.

As for Matt, thought he was a real one that got away and still do, but again, time moves on and so are we now. Good luck Matt!

no surprise there! He was a tryer but simply not good enough for us!

Wish him well, next news will be Simpson gone and a signing for us!

Shows the gulf in quality between English and Scottish league football.

Haha...from the third tier of English football to the Scottish 'Premiership' - that tells you everything about the standard of their football. Wish Matt all the best whilst there though.

It's great that so many of the players on the fringe of our squad are attractive to other teams for loans - that hasn't always been the case in recent years. Great for the players to get some game time and development opportunities (fingers crossed) and great for the club to free up some wages. Win win. Hope he does well there, as with all our loan players.

Some amount of rubbish on here about Scottish Premier League football. How many above have ever seen a live game? Motherwell have taken him on loan for cover. Young player who may develop. Amazing how people need to make petty comments. But we are doing so well they are struggling to find something to moan about!!

Certainly enjoyed a handful of half Decent games ,but unfortunately not quite consistent enough.
Should do ok in the mickey mouse Scottish premier league. And should at least get to play in front of least 2 big crowds this season.
Good luck anyway Matt,it's still miles above my old pub team standard 👍
