McKenna: Edwards Fine Despite Controversial Red Card
Thursday, 20th Oct 2022 15:21

Boss Kieran McKenna says winger Kyle Edwards is fine despite his controversial red card at Cambridge on Tuesday.

Edwards, already booked for catching a U’s player with a high boot, was clearly clipped by Jubril Okedina as he burst into the area on the left but referee Thomas Parsons felt the former West Brom man had dived and gave him his marching orders.

“He’s fine. It was such a ridiculous decision that it didn’t really need any comment,” McKenna said. “He knew it, as did everyone bar one in the stadium, so it’s fine.

“We would have liked the game the other night to be different, but in reality it’s probably the game for that mistake to happen. Kyle was fine, and it’s about moving on to Friday night straight away.

Town were unable to appeal the sending off with Edwards now set to miss the Blues’ game in the Papa Johns Trophy’s round of 32.

“I don’t think you can appeal because it’s two yellows,” McKenna said. “The game the other night is by the by and the frustrating bit is that it means Kyle will miss the [frst] knockout [game] of the competition for a decision that I don’t think needs any more comments from me. It can’t be appealed and that’s the frustrating part, I guess.”

The rule book needs taking down off the shelf, given a complete dusting over ,opened up and modified with intelligence .
There can be no justification in a position such as this ; the ‘double yellow ‘ ruling was put in place for convenience and to avoid needless appealing – but crass mistakes by officialdom need the closest and ready examination and the open option fir the admission of error and a reversal of the blindingly obvious errors .
The man in charge of the game ought to be encouraged to open up , look again , admit mistakes and learn for the future – that a pause and a second or two to think twice is always an option to emotional over reaction ,which is understandable but needs to be checked !

Well I think out of it all Kyle has earned even more respect from fans. He has handled this very well. Hopefully we'll see more of him on the pitch. COYB!

Kyle was mature enough to stay calm and yet still got his point across!

At the end I saw JMc go to the ref. It looked like he spoke very briefly to him. Phil do you know what may have been said?

Bring on Derby.

From the tv pictures it looked something like "I'll have a word in the dressing room"..

I'm sure whatever McKenna said to the ref that it was with his usual calmness as he knew the decision wouldn't be changed.
How refreshing to not see a manager ranting and raving on the touchline despite it being such a bad decision.
It doesn't mean McKenna lacks any passion, just a proper way to do it.
Sir Bobby never lacked passion, but you never saw him ranting and raving on the touchline.
