Friday, 21st Oct 2022 18:28

Former Town goalkeeper Dave Bevis died on Wednesday evening, aged 80.

Bevis was a young player with hometown club Southampton but joined the Blues from amateur Hampshire side Avenue in August 1959.

The 6ft 1in tall keeper made his senior Blues debut in October 1963, the first of eight appearances over the next two and a half years, before he departed for Cambridge in November 1966.

Bevis later joined Margate and Salisbury but lived in Suffolk having hung up his gloves, working in insurance for 30 years and as a courier.

I remember getting his autograph a few times after the weekly training sessions behind the west stand. My condolences to his family.

Along with Wilf Hall never really had much chance to make many appearances behind Roy Bailey. RIP.

The only game I remember seeing him play in was a 4th round FA Cup tie at Tottenham in 1965, I believe on the day of Winston Churchill's funeral. We lost 5-0 on a pitch with more sand than Southend beach, Greaves 3, Gilzean 2. A good keeper, but as said above, few opportunities with Roy Bailey as first choice. RIP.

As a kid, Remember watching Dave many times playing for Cambridge City. Great keeper at that level. Thanks for the memories.
