Mousinho Not Ruling Out Pigott Pompey Return
Tuesday, 14th Mar 2023 11:16

New Portsmouth head coach John Mousinho isn’t ruling out on-loan Blues striker Joe Pigott returning to Fratton Park next season.

Pigott has appeared 10 times since Mousinho took charge towards the end of January with his only start Saturday’s 1-0 defeat to Sheffield Wednesday in which the 29-year-old was named Pompey’s Man of the Match.

However, Mousinho says he has been impressed with Pigott, who has been at Fratton Park for the season, and isn’t ruling out the former AFC Wimbledon man, who has another year left on his Blues contract, returning for 2023/24.

“I don’t know what his situation is at Ipswich but everything Joe has done so far wouldn’t put me off having him back,” he told the Portsmouth News.

“I’ve been really impressed with Joe in terms of what he does on the pitch but I’m more impressed with Joe in terms of what he does off the pitch and in training.

“He’s kept his head down, he’s trained hard, he’s been brilliant around the place, he’s a lively character.

“It’s not just about that, it’s not just what he does to keep the morale of the squad up and keep smiles on faces but it’s also how good he is out there [on the pitch].

“He’s been really unlucky for a couple of reasons. Firstly, the shape change hasn’t helped in playing with just one up top but also Colby [Bishop]’s form.

“One thing which is really good with Joe is that we asked him to drop into the number 10 position so he could link the play between the midfield and the forwards.

“It’s a testament to what a player he is to do that because he’s used to playing against two centre-halves and we’re asking him to drop in and be a bit cleverer. We knew he could do it and he’s a really good option to have.”

Overall this season, Pigott has made 13 starts and 23 sub appearances for Pompey, scoring five times.

I reckon a pay off & a free transfer to Pompey in the summer looks most likely.

Not up to Ledapo and Hirsts level, best for all he finds another permanent club and let's be honest Pompey are a decent football club with good tradition and support
a permanent move there would be good for all

He was a Cook signing and KMc, for whatever reason, does not seem to rate him.

We have Ladapo, Broadhead and Hirst who are all ahead of him. (I know that Hirst is on loan.). It is telling that KMc decided to buy Ahadame and loan Hirst rather than have him in the team.

A parting of the ways in the summer seems inevitable, the only questions being where he goes and on what terms.

Radlett blue town don't need to pay off piggott when he has a year left on his contract! They could send him out on loan again and let the loan club pick up part or all of his wages!

Churchmans…it amounts to the same thing. Town pay part of his contract off to release him or pay part of his contract while he's own loan. 6 of one and half a dozen of the other.

He'll be put up for sale to any suitor. I'm sure he'll command a couple hundred with a year to go on contract.

Was a Cook signing that got fans off their seats as he was a 'proven League One' striker and had smashed it with Wimbledon the year prior. However, just didn't fit in and didn't find himself in McK's plans. All the best to him, and I hope he smashes it for Portsmouth(just not against us).

Churchmans - I don't know how much of Pigott's wages Pompey are paying. As he came to us on a free, he will be on big wages for this league so he might still want a pay off. Yes, aged 29 I'm sure he would prefer a new deal to seeing out his last year so it looks like a deal could be done that suits everyone.

So the new Pompey manager has been really impressed by what he's doing off the pitch that's a massive reason to sign him on a permanent deal. I think the pressure of playing for a bigger club where expectations are higher and you have to play well almost every game is too much for him. At Wimbledon you are more likely to get more of a run in the team even when out of form. Going back to Wimbledon would be a massive drop in wages though so can't see him moving on until his current contract runs out if he's got any sense.

He wasn't given a fair chance at Ipswich but also hasn't been a regular at Pompey. He will be moved on permanently shortly.
