Ashton: We're Working On More Signings But the Transfer Market's a Little Slow
Friday, 7th Jul 2023 11:05

CEO Mark Ashton says the Blues are working on making further additions to the squad despite the market currently being slow, Jack Taylor having become the first signing of the summer when he joined for an initial £1.5 million from Peterborough United a fortnight ago.

The signing of midfielder Taylor came as little surprise, the Blues having chased the 25-year-old since last summer.

“We’ve looked at Jack for, I think it’s well-documented, probably three windows now,” Ashton told the new Official Ipswich Town Podcast.

“It was a tough deal to do, a tough negotiation, I would have expected nothing else, but we got our man, we’re delighted he’s here and I think he’ll bring something else to us.

“He’ll bring more competition for places and he’s a good footballer that we’ve wanted for a while.

“But we need to bring some more in, we’re working on that now. The transfer market’s a little bit dry, it’s a little bit slow when you’re looking at what all the other clubs have done.

“We’re very specific on what we want. Kieran’s very specific on the type of player that he wants, so we’re working through that consistently and you’ll be seeing more faces come in the door, I’m sure.”

Taylor says he expected to join the Blues in the winter window: “It was no secret, was it? I was linked for the last two windows and, to be honest, I thought I was coming in January.

“I wanted to come in January, so I’m obviously delighted. And it played a massive part, knowing that the manager and the club really wanted me to come.”

Hold your nerve Mr Ashton, better to wait and get the right bodies in, than just bodies for the sake of it.

I'd go as far as saying that we don't need bodies in, we have bodies in the academy, we need players who are better than we have got presently.

Ahadame was something of a panic buy last summer when Hirst decided to go to Blackburn.

Ipswichbusiness, I have used the phrase panic buy in the past to refer to Ahadme, but there really are no panic buys when it comes to MA and KM. All of those players will be on the dashboard, we just went quite far down the list. Who knows, if he hadn't have gotten injured and we hadn't have been promoted, Ahadme may have found a place in the side.
Since KM has been in, the signings have been players that can do well at the current level with an eye on them playing with us at a higher level or being sold to play at a higher level. So maybe in that respect, buying a player who was at the current level was a bit panicked.
Anyway, what I will say is that a panic buy in this era is on a whole different level than a panic buy in past Ipswich eras!

Europablue - So we don't need any players in but we need players that are better than what we have?

TractorBlue00, I think Europablue is trying so say yeah, but, no, but, yeah, but, no, but... yeah... or maybe, or, summit like dat.

I could be wrong though.

TractorBlue00, it's a pretty simple point anyone should be able to understand.
We have enough players to fulfill the fixtures. We only need to bring players in if they are better than the players we have now.
Anyway, MA and KM are taking care of business.

Pennblue it appears ‘mickmccarthywasright' disagrees with yours and most peoples assessment this is the guy who said last season and I quote ‘Mckenna is out of his depth!!! We need to swallow our pride and get Big Mick back. I fear for any deluded fans who believe Mckenna can get us back in the'

Nuff said another deluded budgie 🙄

Having read the comments about I have a question.

Was Ladapo a targeted, planned buy, or a panic or make do purchase, given we spent (it seems) the whole summer pursing our primary striker target, Hirst?
