Ainsworth: There Was Nothing in the Game
Saturday, 19th Aug 2023 19:42

QPR boss Gareth Ainsworth felt there was nothing in the Blues’ 1-0 victory over his side and was gutted they didn’t take something from the match.

Conor Chaplin’s goal was enough to see top-of-the-table Town to their third successive Championship win - and their fourth in all competitions - this season.

“There was nothing in the game, honestly,” Ainsworth said. “I’m gutted we haven’t got anything out of that game but I’m also hugely happy with the performance, the commitment, the showing of some players and I know that we’re not at full strength yet, which is even better, it gives me more optimism for the season.

“How we haven’t scored, Sinclair [Armstrong] hits both posts in one shot, it’s destined to nestle in the corner off one of the posts, and then we miss for a yard out.

“We had some really good chances today and if we put them to bed, then I think we put Ipswich to bed, I really do, it’s a different game.

“But there’s always hope and Conor Chaplin, what a good player, popped up, right place, right time, poked it through Morgan [Fox]’s legs into the corner and that’s the difference today.

“For me, I’ve got to look past the result because of where this club’s been for a year and we’re a mile away from where we were last season, it’s all good to see.

“The boys were brilliant, the boys gave me everything, with fitness, with robustness ramping up and actually we’ll probably be at our absolute best after the international break.

“We’ve had to take it a little bit slower with everything. I think we’re going to be fine. Write us off at your peril this year.”

True story. Not our best day, but 3 points nonetheless. Lawd, I’d love to see Sinclair Armstrong play under Kieran McKenna. Out there with our chaps and not having to chase hoofers and wrestle through defenders? He’d be other-worldly. Hope his injury is minor.

We'll see what their 'full strength' contingent consists of when they play us next time at home.

But there is no doubt, that Armstrong chap is a dangerously good player.

Yes, I think Armstrong helped us by pointing up the need for strengthening the centre of defence before the window shuts.

He may be right, but ultimately the record books show a 1-0 win to us.

It did us some good in as much as 3 valuable points, deserved or not, and proved the point that we need to strengthen the Squad - otherwise we’ll wish we had … this is no longer League 1, and Players will need to be on their toes every game.
The Championship is relentless - Leeds next, yes, another ‘tough’ one, as they ALL will be - and tougher as the Autumn / Winter draws on and arrives !!

A sign of a team on form is winning when not playing well. QPR failed to make the most of some very good chances but we got the goal that counts. They're one of those teams that focus on stopping others from playing but looked ok overall. I think they'll do better than last year but doubt contenders of note without significant changes.

He was right! Nothing in the game apart from chaplains goal!
As for there post to post misd it was purely from our mistake!
Two games running now Hutchinson getting robbed of the ball resulting in a chance at goal!
He goes down so easy looking for the ref to blow up!!
This ain't no (get touchedget diving get a free kick academy prem leauge or whatever!)
He needs to smarten up!
We got a hard fought victory!!!
Result bring on leed!
And yes with the previous comments!
Armstgong playing for us coached by KM would be so good!!

It's a very fortuitous victory. Its only a matter of time before our defensive frailties are punished. It may be to our advantage that Janoi has picked up a knock. At least twice a game he passes the ball backwards straight to the opposition. Three wins or not JD, Burns, and Woolfy need their asses kicking and reminded to wake up and concentrate. It's slovenly but we're riding our luck.

Yes let’s get Armstrong in. 5 goals in his career. 4 of those in non league. 1 good appearance in professional football less than 24 hours ago.
Can’t see KMcK making that mistake again.
We need to get used to again players raising there game against us.
Even average forwards who don’t normally score or play well.

"nothing in the game"? Well maybe not for 65 minutes until your guys completely ran out of steam and started cramping up, falling over and we played through you repeatedly.

Let's face it, the comments above are all spot on, we know we need Clarke playing and another CB, we know this league is tougher than we remembered and yes we are probably fortunate at this point to be 100%, but we are learning how to win when we aren't at our best and we will strengthen.

Mark Ashton isnt going to have watched that game through Rose tinted specs thinking we already have the squad to get promoted , we need more and we will get it.

Ainsworth set that side up very well yesterday, they played a very smart system for an hour almost as if we were the home team, thats also a big complement to us.

We were really just the goal better. He is right. If anything it shows our defensive frailties and the need for some real experience at the back. We also need someone to challenge Burns because lm not at all sure he is up to Championship standards.

Yes the pace of the championship found us out at times. Armstrong is not the only striker with pace and power in this league. Because we play very much on the front foot it can leave our defence exposed at times. At championship level our strength in depth is not great. I think over the next two seasons you will see a lot of comings and goings at the club.

You would of course expect any team in any league to play the 1st game at home like a cup final.
The bookmaker has them down as a relegation favourite, for reasons.
However we find ourselves in a position, taking into account, the long unbeaten run and what is fast approaching 1 year since last home defeat. Going into this season as a fancied team, winning 1st 3.
All teams home or away look on us as the team to beat currently…….
Before a ball was kicked this season I believed it would take a very very good performance to take any points from us. Seen nothing after 3 games to change that view…..and if 2or 3 do end up coming in to improve what we have. What could then be achieved this season is unlimited.
The 11 starting so far will look very different come next February I’m sure.

Naylorsrightboot. Currently the centre of defence looks undroppable. Is there a centre back pairing over past 30 games in Europe that has conceded less goals. Although the squad needs improvement in that position. And squad improvement on the right side, along with striker.
Hopefully all 3 incoming.

I thought the substitution of Clarke changed the game for us. More positve going forward.
Also I wonder if the injuries to the bthe Rangers players occured because they couldn't compete with the fitness of our players

As already posted Sinclair Armstrong would be a nailed on starter for us. We were a little fortunate to get away with a clean sheet but never the less what a great poacher's goal from Chaplin he didn't stay down and was first to react and score a goal. Thats why he is our best forward on the pitch relentless and determined to score. He is inspirational but a good team effort well done the blues yet again all over the pitch.

Sinclair Armstrong would be a nailed on starter for us? Nothing above says that?

I was in the home end with a QPR-supporting mate. He maintains (and was proved correct) that their starting 11 is good enough but they have zero depth from the bench. And so it proved - we did, they didn't.

Thought they pushed us hard for 65mins until their injuries kicked in. Thought we rode our luck a lot but from 70mins out there was only going to be one winner.

Unpopular opinion - we can't afford the luxury that Wes Burns provides us, it isn't paying us back. Time to bench him.
