Former Blues Boss Hurst Sacked By Grimsby
Saturday, 28th Oct 2023 20:55

Former Town boss Paul Hurst and assistant manager Chris Doig have been sacked by Grimsby.

Hurst took charge of the Mariners for his second spell in December 2020 and saw them to promotion from the National League in 2021/22 via the play-offs.

He leaves Blundell Park with the Lincolnshire club 21st in League Two having taken 16 points from 14 matches and having lost their last five in all competitions.

“It is with sadness and disappointment that we’ve reached this point,” Jason Stockwood, Grimsby’s chair told his club’s official site.

“Since May 2021, we’ve had a positive relationship with Paul and Chris. We’re proud of our achievements under their leadership: our promotion from the National League, the historic FA Cup run [reaching the quarter-finals last season, knocking out five teams from higher divisions as they did so], and attaining our highest league position in 17 years. However, it’s time to embark on the next phase of the club’s development.

“We’re grateful for their hard work and wish them future success. They are an indelible part of our history and will always be welcome at Blundell Park.”

Elsewhere, QPR have sacked manager Gareth Ainsworth following today's 2-1 home defeat by leaders Leicester in which former Blues midfielder Andre Dozzell was sent off for two bookable offences in a minute having previously scored his side's goal.

Keane, Jewell, McCarthy, Hirst, Lambert and Cook was an awful long time, but it's beginning to look worth the wait for a brilliant manager now.....

Not surprised, was probably worst manager and assistant we have ever had. To be sacked by Grimsby, speaks volumes

Great timing as Norwich might be looking for a new manager next week.

Pity. I liked Paul for a very short time when he arrived at Town until he started to destroy us. Paul you need to go back coaching school. You must have destroyed your team again.

Sadly, ITFC have some very Vindictive and / or Juvenile Supporters.
We were never that kind of Club in the past.

I think Dozzel's goal should have a mention alongside his red card!

Any manager's performance under Evan's ownership should have a rider attached based on that very fact, and I thought Hurst spoke a lot of sense when he arrived, shame he wasn't up to it really.

Six managers, the first five were all both appointed and sacked by Marcus Evans (Cook was appointed by him and sacked by Gamechanger). The common factor in all that serial underachievement was Marcus Evans who clearly had little interest or idea of how to run a football club.

When MM was in charge a lot were calling for a young up and coming manager, there was a lot of optimism in Hurst it was ill founded. He seemed to be too big for his boots wanting to make an impression but failing spectacularly. He was not the messiah just a naughty, naughty boy!

Heresy to mention MM with the other 5 managers...

Hurst sold off Championship level players and replaced them with players from L1. He built a L1 team, and that's where we ended up.

Keane, Jewell, McCarthy, Hurst, Lambert and Cook: I think it's a bit unanalytical to tar them all with the same brush. The situation they were working under just got worse as time went on, so the odds were stacked against them. I think all but one had a genuine desire to do well for the club while they were in office, even though they all ultimately failed, some more spectacularly than others. One did not appreciate the club and was a complete disaster, replacing one of our own who was doing a pretty good job at the time. But now at last with super K McK we are on a different planet. Let's see where the rocket lands.

The main problem for Hurst here was Doig who got the players backs up and alienated them.

Hurst's method works at lower league clubs marshalling inexperienced and unruly players into squads capable of promotion (and much as I dislike Hurst for his time here myself, detractors here should look at the 2022 National League playoffs as Grimsby surely had the most exciting playoff run EVER, even against stiff competition). However, the clear bullying tactics used by Doig in particular don't exactly work when you've got quality players - "Eh mate? You played right back for Rotherham? I've just come back from a world cup in Russia so don't you aggressively tell me how to do my job...". A total shambles, but given his record at Grimsby over both spells it's never nice to see someone fail.

Grimsby due to play Slough Town in FA Cup next Saturday and STFC are favourites to win! Says it all really. Incidentally Slough have a top young manager ( who still plays). Interesting time to get the sack when about to play a non-league team. He is/was hopeless not the worst. Keene ruined our club

Hurst came to ITFC with so much promise, but it all evaporated as the League 1 players that were brought in were either not good enough or took time to bed in.

I never enjoy seeing people getting fired. Imagine if our jobs were as cut throat. You have 14 weeks to be perfect else you're fired. It's brutal when you really think about it.

The problem we had with Hurst was he recruited multiple League 1 and League 2 players into a Championship squad, thus creating a league 1 team. Relegation was inevitable. I liked his enthusiasm, and he seemed like a nice bloke, but he was way out of his league. I certainly wouldn't paint him with the same brush as Keane or even McCarthy. He just wasn't right for the Championship and we paid dearly for it.
