McKenna: Hirst Set For Scan
Tuesday, 26th Dec 2023 23:07

Town boss Kieran McKenna says he expects striker George Hirst to undergo a scan over the next few days having suffered a hamstring injury in the first half of this evening’s 1-1 draw with Leicester at Portman Road.

Hirst, facing his old club, appeared to overstretch and underwent treatment on the pitch before going off and then when he came back on pulling up.

“He felt his hamstring,” McKenna said. “He thought initially it was cramp, which was why he went off and went to go back on again, he felt it was just cramp. But as he went to go back on, he was feeling it.

“I would imagine it’s a strain of some degree and I’m sure it will be scanned in the next few days.”

Even if relatively minor I expect GH will need a couple of weeks. Have to be careful with these injuries as they can haunt players for years if rushed.

So who to start at 9 v QPR? Jacko struggled. He isn’t a CF at this level. Freddie looked an improvement when he came on. He also isn’t up to the job long term but I reckon will start v QPR. (Or does this give an expected chance to Dane after all?).

After that my guess is we get Jay S in on loan as soon as the window opens.

Mind you I hear Chappers has always fancied himself as an out and out striker... :-)

If Jay is inbound he’d have just two weeks to assimilate before the Sunderland then Leicester games in mid Jan… Anyway fingers crossed for George.

PPete, agreed KJ is not at this level. Whereas KJ ran up and down very well, all FL did when he came on was run side to side very well. Not sure DS is going to be with us for much longer, so JS it is (I hope)

i wonder how long it takes to get the registration done? Wishful thinking but could it be possible to have JS available for Stoke? We are so short of center forwards now.

Get fit soon George we need your physicality, as was proved as soon as he went off, Leicester are a big physical and talented side, no wonder they are top. I thought McKenna should of brought Freddie on instead of Jackson, something he did do later on, you don’t often see a sub subbed, we looked a much more balanced side when he was on and he could challenge their centre backs and give them problems something Jackson’s didn’t do. Nathan bless him was trying so hard he beat himself on two occasions. Some draws feel like losing as against our Norfolk buddies but this draw feels to me like a win. So hope your injury is not as bad as we fear George.

Wish Scarlett going back in January and our fairly obvious need for a decent back up to GH, I think it's likely at least two players capable of leading the line or playing as a ten will be bought. Im no fan of Ladapo as a hold up player (hes a decent finisher to be fair to him) Im wondering if KM will play Broadhead up there to hold the ball up? I know that sounds a bit off piste but what we need from that role is someone with a really good first touch and someone who can run channels well. Yes he won't win much in the air against centre halves but having it bounce of FL isnt really for me????

While Scarlett hasn't really looked up to leading the line at this level, it's kind of ironic that he's recalled exactly when Hirst picks up an injury.

Hope Hirsty's back & fit asap.

In the meantime why not play Chaplin up top with either Taylor/Harness/Broadhead/Huthinson in the 10 role?

League of the phoenix. Taking into account a player has to be registered by 12 noon the day before a match, it's impossible for anyone to be signed in time for the stoke game

Interesting to note that the two strikers town were most linked with in the summer are now the equal 2nd top scorers in the division, each with 4 more than Conner.
Armstong & Whittaker.....just sayin...
