Travis Loan Signing Confirmed
Friday, 5th Jan 2024 15:31

Town have confirmed the loan signing of Blackburn Rovers captain Lewis Travis, as first revealed by TWTD this morning.

The 26-year-old, who plays as a defensive midfielder but also right-back or left-back, is currently out of favour at Ewood Park having started only two of the last 10 matches and hasn’t begun a Championship game in his preferred central midfield role since the start of October.

Travis, who will wear the number 28 shirt, will start training with the squad next week and won't be involved at AFC Wimbledon tomorrow.

“I’m really happy to be here and can’t wait to get started,” he told TownTV.  “When I knew Ipswich were calling I jumped at the chance, given the league position and the unbelievable start to the season the team has had.

“To be a part of a team like this is something I’m very excited about and I’m looking forward to playing in front of the supporters.

“I have had good, honest conversations with the Manager and I think the style of play will suit me. I am aggressive both with and without the ball, which I think is what he liked, so it’s about me getting in there and impressing.”

Born in Whiston, Travis was with Liverpool’s academy where he was a defender until joining Rovers’ youth set-up in 2014.

He signed his first pro deal with Blackburn aged 19 in 2017 and made his senior debut later that year, former Town skipper and coach Tony Mowbray having converted him into a midfielder.

Travis, who is 6ft tall, has now made 189 starts and 35 sub appearances for Rovers and signed a new deal running to 2026 in March 2022 and that summer was named club captain.

We understand Town were among a number of Championship clubs who were keen to sign Travis on loan with Millwall, who had previously had an £800,000 offer rebuffed in the summer, and Preston among the other suitors.

Travis, is the Blues’ second signing of the transfer window and is now their fourth loanee, is likely to come into the squad to some extent as cover for Sam Morsy, who is suspended for the next two Championship matches, both in terms of playing position and also leadership qualities.

@Blueboy if you label fans as deluded ,as you have frequently done, do you not realise you are guilty of abuse ? Having an alternative view is to be celebrated but when it is rude or abusive it is not even worthy of consideration. Keep to the rules and you will be fine even if I disagree with your less than motivational opinions.

Blueboy, Opinion, especially if you are in the minority, will always quite rightly result in critique. You shouldnt get wound up by some of the more childish remarks which also ensue. On the face of it the new loan signings offer plenty of potential but you are right to add the caveat that we need to see them produce on the pitch & fit into the Town way of playing. An end product almost certainly needs a new striker.

Very well worded Yourkshire. I’m of the opinion that this club is managed and coached by some of the best in the business…..Although I’m also mindful that this is football and things can change very quickly…..In my honest opinion the 2 new players have come in to upgrade the overall squad.
What is now very important is….We need at least 2 more to upgrade the overall starting 11.
If that goes well….We will finish top 2 as I predicted pre season.

Thought I could smell bird poo. It's just blue boy. I don't usually feed the budgies but the reason travis hasn't played is because he wanted a move away in the summer and a rumored falling out with the manager.

Excellent loan signing. A leader who can deputize for Morsy and who can also play at full back on either side. That's two of the players I wanted us to sign sorted with one loan!

Blueboy your wish to blood our youngsters may be in good faith BUT now is NOT the time as others have pointed out also . Had we got this far in the season and were treading water around mid table looking reasonably safe but not up to promotion it would be a valid point, however having blazed our way to 2nd for half season we cant risk kids that have not played at Championship level , if nothing else mental pressure would brake many , and that is not what we want .So Loan players with experience is the sensible option IMO .

I wonder if this will offer the chance for Town to play more defensively when suits. If there are 2 holding midfield players then one of the defenders- Clarke perhaps- could be given licence to drive forward rather in the mould of John Wark.

Hladky couldn't get in the team last season, for some reason he's playing in the first team.
Seriously though, it's a bit worry if you have been following football for 60 years and have still not twigged that some players do better with a different manager or in a different formation.

At this stage guys lets just welcome Lewis to the squad and save our judgements for later.

This is a forum where people should be allowed to express their views respectfully, without being abused, isn't that the whole point of it? Social media is a very polarizing machine, we are all town fans, lets treat each other with respect, even if you don't agree with them.

COYB!!

5.5 full seasons in championship with Blackburn. In three of those he played over 40 matches. 42 last season, 45 season before. Battling defensive midfielder aged 26. Wants to play for Town. Hmmm, can’t work out why KM would want him.

Best guess is that he will be signed in the summer if it goes well, but perhaps only if we remain in the Championship. I doubt he is Premiership quality. He frees Luongo to go if he wants to, which is quite likely. Two 30+ mids isn't really a plan going forward.

OliveR16 The problem I have with Luongo is that he's so likable and he's had some great moments with us, I don't think I could make the tough call to replace him when the time comes. Also being older than almost all professional footballers makes me biased against replacing older players.
