Former Blue Norris Overwhelmed By Fans' Support
Former Blue Norris Overwhelmed By Fans' Support
Tuesday, 30th Jan 2024 13:50

Fans have rallied round former Blues midfielder David Norris after he claimed his parents had “disappeared with my savings”, forcing him to sell memorabilia from his career.

Norris, who was with Town between 2008 and 2011, put the 2003/04 Second Division (now League One) champions medal he won with Plymouth Argyle up for sale on social media, leading fans to query why he was doing so, other items from his career, including Blues shirts having already been sold off.

In response, the 42-year-old revealed his situation: “My parents have disappeared with my savings so going through solicitors/court to try and get some back but it’s obviously expensive. Ideally if I could get rid with a buy back option that would be great.”

PIlgrims fans reacted by setting up a Just Giving page to ensure the one-time Home Park hero kept his medal with fans of his other clubs, including the Blues, Portsmouth and Leeds, also contributing. The total current stands at £4,378.

Jon Walters, who played alongside Norris at Town, put a shirt signed by Pele up for auction in order to add to the funds raised.

Norris was evidently moved by the generosity: ”I don’t know where to start. I was just trying to raise some money to help with solicitors/court costs but overwhelmed beyond belief for everyone’s support.

“Thank you for allowing me to keep the medal, I can’t believe the response. Once it’s over I will pay back or donate back.”

What happened here that his parents ran off with all his savings?! What kind of nasty parents do that?!
So sad and gutted he feels he has to do this as a consequence, and he has to pay a load out to fight for his own money back!
We support you Chuck. Donated.

lol The irony of football fans donating cash to bail out an individual from a highly paid career their own money helped pay for in the first place. Guess there’s no telling some mugs.

Medblue someday you might need someone's help! It's called kindness.

Medblue No-one is forcing them to give. People can decide for themselves if they value something. Norris isn't even asking for donations.
It kind of brings home one aspect of footballer's lives into perspective. There should be much more support with financial management. There should never be a way for a player to be impoverished because someone took all his money away.

Johnwarksshorts- a bit of ‘kindness’ I call it gullibility for an individual who has earned at least hundreds of thousands throughout his career and has lost it through some sort of carelessness of his own- there are far more worthy causes to donate to than David Norris - by no means an ITFC legend or anywhere close.

For those not old enough to know, Nortis was a good player for us. Why the negative comments about his wealth, or lack of it? His pay would have been nothing like current players, and you would have thought you could trust your parents with your money! Medblue I hope you never have to ask for help. There but for the grace of God.....

Whether you earn £1 a week or £1M, if someone steals your savings you are left with £0.

Medblue you’re mean hearted and on the face of it,
You’ve let down the badge. However it happened - if they stole what he had when they were presumably looking after his savings for him, and regardless of whether you think that was sensible or not, they’re cheats and he is now on hard times. Whatever happened to “Once a Blue….”

And even if there are more worthy causes (and I agree there are many) that doesn’t make David Norris unworthy.

Imagine waking up and being a miserable sod like Medblue. Have some compassion. Or if that is too much of a challenge, opt to stay silent. PhuketPete is right, you're an embarrassment to the badge.

Never nice to be placed in this position.
But correct me if I'm wrong but wasn't this the player who left ipswich at the end of a contact. Offered a new deal but decided to go for more money on a free

FromIpswichtoPhoenix, PhuketPete - compassion for ex-footballers who have lost their money through their own carelessness is pretty low down my list of things to be compassionate about. Why don’t the pair of you join the back of the queue for low IQ football fans wishing to donate to Norris

There is a lot of nonsense about "embarrassment to the badge" posted, no doubt, by some that know nothing about what that means. I remember an Ipswich player who celebrated a goal with a "handcuff" celebration in "solidarity" for his pal, Luke McCormick. That was a tad more than just embarrassing.

I was quite miffed when he purposely let his contract run down and so left on a free for Portsmouth, no doubt negotiating a bumper signing on fee into the bargain. Bit of retribution when Portsmouth went bust. The question is, how were his parents custodians of his savings to be able to run off with it? Tax evasion? Doesn't add up. The story line is not the whole tale.

Yes Woodford Tim - I don't think we've seen the whole detail of this story. There is usually more than one side to such stories. Norris wasn't a bad player, although worth nowhere near the £1.8m Jim persuaded Evans to stump up, but he did have a decent attitude on the pitch & always seemed to give 100%. That's probably why Keane made him captain.
