Quartet Could Win Irish Caps
Thursday, 10th Oct 2024 12:40

Four Town players could win Republic of Ireland caps this evening when the Boys in Green take on Finland in a Nations League tie in Helsinki this evening (KO 7.45pm).

Dara O’Shea, Sammie Szmodics, Chiedozie Ogbene and Jack Taylor are all in the squad with the first three likely starters and the latter hoping to win his first senior cap from the bench, four years after his first call-up.

O’Shea has previously won 28 caps, Ogbene 22, scoring four times, and Szmodics six. Also in the party are former Town loanees Troy Parrott, now with AZ Alkmaar, and Mark McGuinness, currently with Luton, who is in the squad for the first time. The game is being shown live by Viaplay International on YouTube here.

The Irish are third in the Group B2 after losing their first two matches last month, 2-0 defeats at home to both England and Greece in Dublin. They face the Greeks in Piraeus on Sunday.

Elsewhere, academy keeper Woody Williamson, 18, who is currently on loan at Chelmsford City, could win his ninth Scotland U19s cap when his side take on Hungary in the first of two friendlies at the DAC Stadium in Debrecen this afternoon (KO 3pm).

Meanwhile, Blues centre-half Cameron Burgess was an unused sub as Australia beat China 3-1 in as AFC World Cup qualifying group game in Adelaide this morning.

But apart from O'Shea you could say they are a second string quartet...

We don't have a second string. We have starters and finishers.

Agree but I also don’t think we yet know what the starters and finishers will look like in the new year. KM is still trying to get the best out of several players and combinations

Oh well, I guess if you have to explain a gag then you know it hasn't worked...

Cue the mournful violins.
